Cities and Memory - remixing the world episodes

  • 2501: Vaporetto ferry arriving in Chioggia
Recorded by Cities and Memory - a vaporetto (the Venetian water "taxi" boat) on a journey from the island of Pellestrina, Venice to Chioggia. We hear the boat approaching Chioggia with its engines on full power, before dropping the power as we move into the landing station, and the vaporetto making its final entry manoeuvres as we approach land. A classic sound of Venice.

  • 2500: The sirens of San Vigilio
Punta San Vigilio reimagined by Cities and Memory. This piece imagines if, like the stories of Greek mythology, the sirens actually lived on the centre of Lake Garda. As the waves lap, we imagine ourselves on a boat crossing this grand lake, with the low-end synths representing the sound of our boat making the crossing. Halfway across, we slowly hear the song of the sirens, low and quiet at first, before bursting fully into an angelic chorus that draws us inexorably closer, until eventually we begin to sink beneath the waves, until it's quiet once more.

  • 2499: On the shores of Lake Garda
Waves lap on the shore of Lake Garda at the picturesque Punta San Vigilio viewpoint at the end of a small quay. Gentle waves lap as a speedboat passes, which then grow along with the sounds of boatwash towards the end of the recording. Passing gulls contribute to the soundscape. Recorded by Cities and Memory.

  • 2497: Al Bujairi
Al Bujairi village reimagined by Jeff Dungfelder.
"The Three Words from this location are “civil-slacker-reaction”.
The inspiration for my piece “Al Bujairi” is based on incorporating the meaning of these two words from the original sound file location in Saudi Arabia - Civil (relating to ordinary citizens and their concerns), and Reaction (a person's ability to respond physically and mentally to external stimuli).
The field recording that I have used for the foundation of this sound piece is from the historical village of Al Bujairi (Saudi Arabia). The Islamic call to prayer (the adhan), has the root meaning “to listen”. The adhan is called out from the mosque five times a day, to make available to everyone (civil - ordinary citizens) the summary of Islamic belief: “God is great” and “There is no god but Allah, Muhammad is the messenger of God”. This statement of faith, called the Kalimah, is the first of the Five Pillars of Islam.
With this piece I have envisioned a world of sound that with repeated listening inspires peace within. With the “act of listening”, the many layers of sound weave together to reveal an opening of ones heart (reaction - responding physically and mentally). In a sense, this listening becomes a form of prayer. One translation of the adhan even says “prayer is better than sleep”."

  • 2498: Scrambled Clarity
Oxford carnival reimagined by Ollie Campbell.
"I used two of the words allocated to me - 'wake' and 'team'.
The first word 'team' informed the source material that I used in the composition of this piece. Among other things, I used excerpts from recordings from a certain prog rock band that featured three drummers as part of their live show. Each drummer contributes to one rhythm on stage in much the same way each player in a sports team has a role to play in achieving the final goal.
The second word 'wake' informed the narrative of the composition. The ending represents an awakening from a disruptive sleep. The rest of the piece is based on my own experience of sleep, and how often, just before I drift off, there are a myriad of different thoughts, reflections and worries rushing around my brain. Sleep is a restorative process and I often awake feeling refreshed and clear-headed."

  • 2496: I've been SPLASHING around the NIGHTCLUBS avoiding various INTRUSIONS
Table Mountain frogs reimagined by Daryn Brown.
"Having the sounds of tree frogs and the words Splashing, Nightclubs and Intrusion, I wondered "what kind of nightclubs would tree frogs go to?" This is what i imagine they would be nodding along to while they drink and eat flies."

  • 2495: Kelloja
Helsinki bells reimagined by Richard Watts.
"The words I had were spared, dominate, error and I started with the dictionary definition of each and put together sound descriptions of how I though each would sound.
Spared - refrain from killing, injuring, or distressing; dominate - have power and influence over; error - the state or condition of being wrong in conduct or judgement.
I  sampled the bells and pitch shifting one sample up and one sample down and then added them together as the background. Most of the sounds were created in Alchemy or by me just sampling a sound and processing it."
