  • 2481: Huygens: alien wind descent
Recording by the European Space Agency.
Audio data collected by the Huygens Atmospheric Structure Instrument (HASI), which includes an acoustic sensor, during Huygens' descent, 14 January 2005.
This recording is a laboratory reconstruction of the sounds heard by Huygens' microphones.
Several sound samples, taken at different times during the descent, are here combined together and give a realistic reproduction of what a traveller on board Huygens would have heard during one minute of the descent through Titan's atmosphere.

  • 2479: One Step
Neil Armstrong's iconic "one small step for man" radio transmission, reimagined by Simon Woods.
"The different voices, all saying the quote "I'm stepping off the LEM, one step", etc in different languages, represents the different backgrounds of the men and women, engineers, scientists and technicians, who worked to put Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin on the moon. According some estimates there were as many as 400,000 people who worked on the project."
"It also represents the achievement for all the people of the world.
"On the technical side - the voices are from Google Translate, the later lead line was generated by dropping the audio file of Neil Armstrong into a MIDI track and altering the notes to fit.
"The white noise is taken from the noise between Neil’s comments and altered."

  • 2477: Song of the Romanovs
Outside the Moscow State Historical Museum reimagined by Cities and Memory.
The recorded announcements about the museum are on a short loop, being played fairly loudly from prominently positioned speakers quite high above head height. As such, they spread over a surprisingly wide distance, and they become quite gratingly irritating after a short time. This piece is based around the notion of how intrusive these sounds become to Red Square visitors, by constructing a piece made of heavy, distorted synth lines and a repetitive kick and snare pattern that lock the attention and repeat in a similar way to the announcements. The brief pause in the snare pattern represents the brief end of the recorded Russian announcement, before it restarts once again after a short respite.

  • 2476: Outside the State Historical Museum, Moscow
Recorded by Cities and Memory. Outside the State Historical Museum in Red Square, Moscow, you can hear a lengthy recorded message describing in detail (presumably) what you can see when you visit the museum and beckoning you in from outside. Elsewhere, you can hear the ambience from the rest of Red Square as tourists mill around and enjoy the views of this iconic space.
