  • 2490: Infinite Nightingale (Alex Hehir remix)
An unusual one today - as part of our Sounding Nature project, Cities and Memory reimagined the sound of nightingale song into a new piece called "Infinite Nightingale". Sound artist Alex Hehir has taken the composite stems from this piece and created a reimagined version of that sound - a remix of a remix of the sounds of the world! It's a gorgeous, string-led reinterpretation of the original piece. Enjoy!

  • 2489: Endless Mountain
    Reimagined by Liz Helman.
    Words used: ///conquest.mountain.reeling
"Allocated the words Mountain, Reeling + Conquest, I have used the first two as my starting point making a sound piece that rises + falls, leaving the listener reeling from disorientation."

  • 2487: ///divide.risk.bravery (Moscow)
    Reimagined by Karhide.
    Words used: ///divide.risk.bravery
I wanted the track to be directed by the name, images and sound of the walkthrough of the market. I started by creating wave files from two images of the market and the title of the track '///divide.risk.bravery' and these were used as source metirial in the BeepMap plugin in FL Studio and then one bar loops were exported.  These were then imported in to the Wavetable synthesizer in Ableton Live to create the base synth sounds in the track. The next step was to select chords for the track and these were taken from the title, selecting D, E, B and A (D min, Ab maj, Eb min, Bb maj).
    Software:
    FL Studio
    Ableton Live
    Izotope Ozone
    Plugins used:
    Ableton - Wavetable
    Ableton - Simpler
    Image Line - BeepMap
    SugarBytes - Wow
    Valhalla DSP - Delay
    Valhalla DSP - Plate
    Audio Damage - DubStation 2
    Plugin Boutique - Stereo Savage
    MaxForLive - LFO

  • 2486: Night in Moscow
    Reimagined by Ian Haygreen.
    Words used: ///cascade.dressy.panic
"I isolated 6 elements from the recording which were lightly treated with a few effects (reverb, EQ, etc): the regular bleeping sound in the original has become the chirping crickets. The voice and laugh were left untreated, as was the motorbike. The car horn was used in various ways: the stab sound, a slight paulstretch at the beginning and end, the didgeridoo-like sound, the phased, treated 8-bar sounds (x3) towards the end of the piece. A bit of background was also used. To this I added a big-standard bass, bass-drum and 2 arpeggios (left and right speakers), and a xylophone.
"The piece has a tense, slightly panicked feel to it, I think, due in part to the bass line and xylophone part. The arpeggio part flows (cascades) on the outer edges of the piece, and the piece starts slow but rushes along at the end. It sounds simply but all the parts are quite elaborate (dressy)."

  • 2485: Ismailovo market, Moscow
Recorded by Cities and Memory. A walkthrough of the famous (if somewhat run-down) Ismailovo market in Moscow, where you can buy anything your heart desires, as long as what your heart desires is a Matryoshka doll or a piece of Soviet memorabilia.

  • 2484: Outside the Bolshoi
Recorded by Cities and Memory. A soundscape from the major road running across the front of the Bolshoi Theatre, Moscow, that really demonstrates the busy-ness of central Moscow. You can make out the water fountains outside the front of the theatre, but these are soon drowned out by the sounds of traffic, signals and a dramatic motorcycle departure.

  • 2483: Composition 2019/20 (Untitled)
    Reimagined by Bernhard Living.
    Words used: ///collide.shelter.book
Composition 2019/20 (Untitled) uses a sample of chiming bells of the Spasskaya Tower, in Red Square, Moscow. Moscow is one of my favourite cities - but when I visit I avoid tourist spots like the plague - and so never got to places such as Red Square or the Kremlin.  Instead - I take shelter from the crowds - and spend most of my time at the New Tretyakov gallery - which has an extensive collection of Constructivist and Suprematist art - including work by Kazimir Malevich - Lyubov Popova - and Alexander Rodchenko. Malevich’s ‘Black Square’ of 1915 has been an important influence on my compositional practice - which is charactered by sparse textures - minimal content - and maximal repetition.
Composition 2019/20 (Untitled) is a collision between the original sound of the bells and the technology that was used to create the final work - with the sound of the bells altered almost beyond recognition. The Red Square full of noisy tourists has been transformed into a more sublime space - and evokes the black square of Malevich.
