  • 2423: The secret life of airports
Hamad International Airport, Qatar reimagined by Cities and Memory.
This piece is informed by those little moments when you're sitting in an airport, listening to the sounds of the world going by, when at a certain point, certain sounds seem to interlock and overlap in just such a way as to create a rhythm or a musical melody. You sit up, listen, and before you've barely had time to notice, the moment is gone, the sounds untangle themselves, and the world goes on as before.
This happened to me while contemplating this recording, with the occasional quasi-arpeggio or proto-rhythm popping out of the calm/chaos. As a tribute to these moments when you feel like you've discovered the secret life of airports, I made this piece from eight interlocked pieces of the same synth, which build and build along with your recognition and realisation and - just the way those moments go in "real life" - the rhythms disappear at once, leaving only the sound you were first listening to.

  • 2422: Inside Hamad International Airport, Qatar
    Recorded by Marcel Gnauk.
"We arrived around 5.00am in the morning and I remember walking around and there wasn’t much going on around this time. I placed the recorder in the waiting hall at Terminal 1 if this is correct and let them run for about 16 Minutes! It is a very calm “the world is waking up” feeling when you sit there and just listen! Together with the sunrise behind the glass wall, it was fantastic!"

  • 2421: Duet for Jupiter-8 and muezzin
    Reimagined by Cities and Memory.
For this piece, we've taken the stop-start nature of the call to prayer as a starting point, and wanted to highlight something of the disjointed staccato feel, but also the sense of calm generated by the simple act of repetition. We've limited ourselves to one instrument, the Jupiter-8 synth, creating a series of repetitive notes that enter into a dialogue with the muezzin's call, depicting what this particular sonic experience felt like to us as we were recording it.

  • 2420: Stop-start muezzin, central Riyadh
Recorded by Cities and Memory. Outside a mosque in central Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, a muezzin's call to prayer is unusually stop-start, continuing with repeated short phrases over a few minutes, while in the background you can hear the bustle of a capital city at sunset.

  • 2419: A Sentimental Journey
STS-135 launch command reimagined by Richard Watts.
"The piece starts with the roar of the Space shuttle engines which I created by sampling the background of the original recording in Alchemy then changing the turning and speed. I have used a repeating piano rift to get a sense of timing and weightlessness. There are also some strings which play a more minor riff against the piano to give a sense of danger."
