Near the top of the show we also chatted with Greg Rekus, who is currently touring Western Canada (in a winterized van) behind his sophomore CD "Punkcoustic".

Radio debut of a new folk duo! Parlour Roller is two ex-pat Ontarians (Ontarioans?) Skye Wallace and Ben Doerksen, now resident in East Van. Lovely to meet them and learn about their upcoming BC pre-Xmas tour. You can find them on Twitter and FB. (don't forget the 'Canadian' spelling of Parlour!)
Earlier in the show I pulled out some lovely 80's vinyl by South African bands in honour of the late Nelson Mandela. I hope he's smiling down on us.
Congrats to Vancouver Community College music grad Jennifer Gasoi for her Grammy nom! We ended the show with a cut from her nominated album (children's music category).

I've been hearing a lot of good things through the grapevine (excuse the pun) about this band Good For Grapes. Turns out they're all true! Great guys and very energetic live set, even unplugged, in cramped quarters at CiTR. Local heroes, or soon to be. Get to their Vogue Theatre show Dec. 14 for future "I saw 'em when.." bragging rights.
Also played some vintage Dave Van Ronk to warm you folks up for the next Coen Bros. movie, which is loosely based on his life and music.
Keep warm everyone! Big cold front moving in, we may see some actual pre-Xmas snow here in Vancooolver.

A hint of winter hangs in the air; hope you are all keeping warm, dry and toasty. Tonight's interviews included one with Jon Landry, of Halifax band The Stanfields. They have *two* shows coming up in Vancouver - one rock, one acoustic.
Later in the show I chatted with Victoria's Quinn Bachand, best known for his Celtic band with sister Qristina. He now heads a new gypsy jazz band called Brishen. Did I mention he's only 17?? Best of luck on his upcoming Berklee audition.
A famous Berklee grad provided us with some good protest music at show's end, and then...a "Nightcap". Best wishes to all my American friends on this Thanksgiving weekend. Take care and easy on the turkey!

The 50th anniversary of the JFK assassination is coming up. Tonight we featured The Kennedy Suite, a rock opera/song cycle about that event, produced by the Cowboy Junkies and other Toronto musicians. Also from Toronto, a new 25th anniversary release from the Skydiggers. Check out the new version of "Desmond's Hip City".
Coming to town soon is the 8th annual Grand Cariboo Opry, hosted by Barney Bentall. Proceeds from that show go to the Potluck Cafe Society, so tonight we learn a bit about them from exec director Heather O'Hara.

Tonight's live session was with two Calgarians who come to folk music from a punk angle. Great little session, hope you enjoy it, and maybe learn a thing or two about Calgary. Tomorrow Joni Mitchell turns 70! So I tried to squeeze in a few of her older tunes on vintage vinyl. More to come next week! I also featured the five finalists for the upcoming Canadian Folk Music Awards, contemporary album category. Just to give you a taste at the depth of talent this country is producing.
