We're enjoying a gorgeous autumn week here in Vancouver. What used to be called "Indian Summer". Anyhoo, hope you enjoy tonight's music and interviews. At the top of the show we had a nice chat with SONiA, aka Disappear Fear, who returns to Vancouver for a live show Oct. 18. At 8:30 I was joined in the studio by guitarist Simon Fox, who is part of the West Coast Guitar Night (15th annual) that takes place on Oct. 19 at the Cultch.

Welcome to another edition of Folk Oasis! Still kumbaya-free as we roll into October (already!) 2013. Tonight's interview was live with Nick of Spirit Family Reunion. They've been touring across North America and are looking forward to their inaugural Vancouver gig on Oct. 9.
Very excited about next week's show, which will feature a live session with East Vancouver bard Geoff Berner. Yeah! He has just published a novel "Festival Man" so we'll have lots to chat about.

Happy autumn 2013, everyone! It was a lovely crisp, sunny day here in the Lower Mainland. My kind of weather.. Tonight's interview was with Newfoundland-born, Bowen Island-based musician Lorne Warr. He's just released his first solo album (he's also a member of the Creels) and has some local gigs upcoming.
Today is Ian Tyson's 80th (!) birthday. It's also the 25th ann. of TMBG album "Lincoln", so both occasions are commemorated in song. Hope you enjoy tonight's eclectic selection, and thanks for listening.

While controversy continues here at UBC (http://president.ubc.ca/featured/2013/09/18/ubc-measures-announced-to-address-the-c-u-s-frosh-events/) it's also SOCAN reporting week for our station. A fine excuse to play CanCon, featuring artists who are playing in Vancouver in the near future. The notable exception being the song by Arrogant Worms, which I played since it's Int'l Talk Like A Pirate Day tomorrow. Arrrr!
Tonight I broke with tradition and interviewed a non-musician. Chelsea McMullan is director of a documentary about transgendered folk musician Rae Spoon. The film has its world premiere at the upcoming Vancouver Film Festival. (a great film, so try to see it when it's here)

The school year is still frosh-fresh here at UBC and already controversies rage. (google "rape chant" if you are not in the know..)
Anyhoo, it is 9/11, and to that end Ryan Adams and Leonard Cohen finish tonight's show. Before that, a couple of 9/11 birthdays were featured (Leo Kottke, Dave Bidini).
Tonight's interviews: 1) Sue Malcolm of bluegrass band Highrise Lonesome. Their CD release is at the ANZA Club Sept. 23. 2) Melissa Bandura (aka Familiar Wild) also has a new CD, she will be at Rifflandia this weekend and various venues around BC in September.

What a fun show! At the top, Rodney DeCroo called in to chat about his upcoming Vancouver Fringe Festival production, "Allegheny, BC". Most of the rest of the show was ambushed (in best way possible) by East Van man C.R. Avery. We heard some of his recorded work, both new and old, and a few live songs. And my sister phoned in to tell a (mostly true) story about me! Good times.
