Happy 7th day of spring 2014! Am pleased to report that flowers are in bloom and birds are squawking/stalking their territory here in Vancouver.
Lots of new Canadian music tonight, and a lovely phone interview with Craig Cardiff. His Vancouver gig is April 3 and I'm looking forward to it. Maybe I'll add to the Book of Truths!
And yes, that is Kate Bush you'll hear, singing "My Lagan Love". Excuse my screaming, but I WILL BE SEEING HER LIVE IN LONDON SEPT. 16! All hail the power of fan club pre-sale codes.
Have a great week and thanks for listening!

On this last day of winter 2014, lots of interviews! First we spoke to former Vancouverite-now-in-Nashville Steve Dawson. He's on tour with his new acoustic album and will be in Vancouver March 30. Next up was a phone chat with Glenn Sutter from Saskatchewan, currently on tour in BC. To round out the show, Kent McAlister joined us - one of his last public appearances before moving to Calgary. We'll miss ya, Kent!
Hope you're all keeping warm and dry. Happy spring!

It's that time of year.. Our annual fundraising campaign is on, so I brought in UBC Radio alumnus Ken Hardie to help with the pitching. He has just retired as Translink's communication director and had an extensive career in radio before that. And it all started here at CiTR! Thanks so much to those of you who have generously donated. We are still accepting your donations after March 5, so please visit

Can you believe it's already the last Wednesday in February?! On tonight's show we chatted by phone to a couple of folks: first was Dominic Desrochers from Montreal-based trad band Bon Débarras. They are a featured act at this weekend's Festival du Bois.
Later in the show I chatted with Chris Ronald, who has a CD release party (+ video premiere) at the Anza Club March 6.
In between, eclectic tunes and an unpronounceable Icelandic name! Fortunately our resident Finn, Gary Karhonen, was in neighbouring studio and helped me out. Thanks, GAK!
And thanks to all of you for listening. Our annual fundraising drive officially starts Feb. 27. This year, all I ask from you podcast listeners is a FIVE DOLLAR BILL!
You can do it, it's easy.. http://citr.ca to donate.

Tonight's show extended by about 1/2 hour as "Sexy In VanCity" did not broadcast. At top of show we spoke with fiddler/stepdancer April Verch, who has a show coming up at Rogue Folk Club Feb. 28. Live in the studio tonight we had Christopher Ford. I enjoyed his quirky sense of humour and hope you might too. Watch for him at local open mics, and a BC/Alberta tour in April.
We're still in winter, folks, so stay warm and play safe..
    Take care,and thanks for listening!

Seeing as it's so close to Valentine's Day, the theme of tonight's show is "love". Love in its many variegated forms, as interpreted by an eclectic range of Vancouver artists. Enjoy! And may your Friday (a full moon too, btw) be lovely.
Thanks for listening and please keep in touch!

Happy February! We're enjoying rare (for this time of year) sunshine here on the normally wet coast. Maybe enjoying the accompanying cold temperatures a bit less.
So pull up a chair and a toasty warm beverage, and enjoy tonight's show. Michael Averill came in to play a few songs and share some great stories about his personal history. Also did a phone interview with Yvonne Hernandez from The Fretless about their current tour and upcoming Vancouver show.
Thanks, as always, for listening. If you liked tonight's show, please let your pals know!

Tonight young (21 yrs old) singer-songwriter Connor Roff returned to the CiTR studios to chat about his brand new, debut CD release. Quite the eye-catching cover! He'll be doing the official launch on Jan. 31 at the Media Club, and a trip across the country on VIA Rail not long after that. Catch him when he's in your town!

This week the folk world mourns the loss of one of its great icons and activists, Pete Seeger. In the spirit of his dedication to working with and inspiring the young, I leaned towards that for my musical tribute. Rest in peace, Mr. Seeger.

Thanks for tuning in, and do feel free to drop a line to say hello!

    cheers, val

Greetings from the beautiful foggy-and-then-sunny West Coast! Tonight I was happy to feature a locally produced answer to those Starbucks compilations: East Van Special Blend. 18 eclectic tracks including, of course, some folksy-rootsy stuff. I forgot to mention on air that a CD release party will be held Jan. 30 at Chapel Arts.
At 8:30 I did a phone interview with Lindsay May, who did a live session on this show in late 2012. Nice to catch up with her and chat about her new CD. That release party will be Jan. 25 at the Rogue Folk Club.
Happy birthday to my mom Jan. 23! Although I doubt she'll ever figure out podcasts to hear the song I sent out, I love her all the same.

Enjoy the rest of your week and thanks, as always, for listening!
