Welcome to tonight's edition of Folk Oasis, which comes during a turbulent news week. Featured festival tonight: Salmon Arm Roots & Blues Festival. Beautiful little town, great music.
I also chatted with Eden Oliver of Victoria folk group West My Friend, about their upcoming "Bikes, Barns & Beers" tour. Sounds like fun!
Also in tonight's mix: a musical tribute to baseball's
Tom Henke (in the crowd at Nat Bailey Stadium last night) and a farewell to the dearly loved Robin Williams.
Thanks so much for listening, and be kind to yourselves this weekend, won't you?

    hugs, val

Since it was BC Day on Monday, I decided to make this an all-BC edition of Folk Oasis. So much talent here at home. This week's featured festival was Harmony Arts Festival in West Vancouver, which takes place Aug. 1-10. Hope you enjoy tonight's variety, and the interview with Serena Eades of acoustic duo Sostenuto. It's also SOCAN reporting week, so some BC composers will receive a few extra pennies on next royalty cheque after this show airs. What is SOCAN? see http://www.socan.ca/about

Hope you're enjoying summer! Take care and thanks so much for listening.

    cheers, val

Welcome back, podcast listeners! Apologies for technical difficulties the last few weeks. I'm told by the tech kids that it is under control. I enjoyed tonight's show (partly because I got to squeeze in some Elvis Costello + Kate Bush) and hope that you will too. Had a wonderful chat with Colleen Rennison about her new solo album. What a year she's having! Also: new releases, festival features, even a set of WWI songs. Eclectic AND kumbaya-free!
Have a safe and happy long weekend, y'all, and see you next week..

    cheers, val

Greetings to all, and especially those recovering from a long weekend at Vancouver Folk Music Festival! Thanks to all who dropped by CiTR's booth near Stage 3. This week I dipped into the new releases bin (which is pretty deep) and also featured the upcoming folk festival in Mission, about an hour outside Vancouver.

In the mix: a musical tip of the toque to Bob McDonald of CBC's Quirka and Quarks! Hope you enjoy tonight's show. Apologies for the delay in podcast setup, and keep enjoying your summer.

    cheers, val

Yes, folks, it's almost time for the 37th annual gathering of the folkies down at Jericho Beach. Folk Fest is just a few days away! From Brasstronaut to Joan Baez, we covered a lot of musical ground on this extended podcast. Near top of show I chatted with Ben Plasse, of the Howlin' Brothers. Looking forward to seeing them, and so many other artists! Thanks for tuning in, and hope to see a bunch of you at Jericho...rain or shine!

    cheers, val

Summer is here, World Cup fever has hit, and it's hot, baby! With festival season in full bloom, you'll find more spicy worldbeat nuggets in the musical mix tonight. I had the pleasure of chatting with Tamar of the Ventanas, and then Samantha Martin. Both are with Toronto bands: different musical genres, outstanding singers. I look forward to hearing them at the Vancouver Folk Music Festival. The other featured BC festival tonight was the Harrison Festival of the Arts, already in its 36th year. A great excuse to get out of the city and hear some great music.
Take care, play safe, keep cool, and thanks for listening!

Hope you're all enjoying your summer! Vancouver Folk Music Festival is only a few weeks away; I was very honoured to speak tonight with one of this year's headliners, Eliza Gilkyson. July 4th is also coming up, so I ended the show with some timely tunes to get my American friends in the mood.. In between, more tasty musical treats and feature on an upcoming festival in Smithers.

Happy Independence Day to my American friends, and big thanks to you all for listening. See you next week!

    cheers, val

June is (for real) Accordion Awareness Month! Tonight I had the pleasure of interviewing Rowan Lipkovits of CRFO-FM's show "Accordion Noir". They also organize an Accordion Noir festival each September, so we had lots to chat about. Rowan was also kind enough to curate an accordion-based playlist. Some very cool tunes.
Hope you enjoyed tonight's show, and if you did, please spread the good word around! Thanks for listening, and hope you'll tune in next week.

Welcome to the second-to-last Folk Oasis of spring 2014! It's been a tumultuous week here in Vancouver, so I hope this podcast will be a bit of an (ahem) oasis for all y'all. And don't forget it's Accordion Awareness Month!

Joining me live in the studio this week was Grimsby, Ontario based singer Paul Federici. He's been driving across Canada the past few weeks and had a few tales to tell. Catch him in Vancouver this weekend.

Happy Father's Day and have a good time at all the Car-Free festivals taking place around Vancouver. Thanks again to all of you folks for supporting this show. Feel free to drop me a line to say howdy - I love hearing from you all.

    cheers, val
