As tumbleweeds blew by on the streets of Vancouver (game 1 of 1st round NHL playoffs), we at Folk Oasis madly fought the retrograde of Mercury. Somehow 2 hours of eclectic roots music made it to the airwaves of metro Vancouver; here it is for the rest of y'all. High Can(adian) Con(tent) this week, and a set dedicated to CBC personality and UN ambassador George Stroumboulopoulos. Long may you rock, sir.

While a big ole birthday party took place downtown, we spun the usual eclectic mix here at Folk Oasis. Tonight's featured album is the newest from Montreal singer-songwriter Roxanne Potvin. It's available on Black Hen Records and was produced by Vancouver's own Steve Dawson. Enjoy the spring blossoms and see you next week! Thanks so much for your support.

Happy spring, and welcome to 2 more eclectic hours of roots music from our back yard and beyond! Joining me for a live set at 8:30 were Dave Hadgkiss and Kelly Haigh of local group Folk Thief. Their CD release party is coming up April 6 at the Railway Club. Don't forget to send your suggestions for my all-Bob (Dylan) show, airing May 18, to [email protected]

Merci et bonne fin de semaine!

First show of Spring 2011! Vancouver songwriter Mathieu Lavigne joined me in the studio for an interview and several songs. His CD release party is coming up March 26 at Lanalou. Also featured tonight was a musical tribute to Vancouver icon and all-round hero David Suzuki. He turns 75 on March 24.
Enjoy the rest of your week and don't put those snow shovels away just yet, Canada!*

Hope you enjoy this week's pre-St. Patrick's Day show. Among the Celtic-influenced ditties we sprinkled tunes from South Louisiana, Cackalacky, Montreal, even Vancouver. This week's featured album was the wonderful "June In Siberia" by Mark Berube.

A "Black Velvet Band" and "Unicorn" free zone..

    Play safe, everyone!

Tonight we featured a live session with Marian and Steve from the Vancouver Folk Song Society. They talked about the Society and regaled us with a few folk songs. Learn more about the VFSS at www.folksongsociety.org. Also featured a few cuts from Geoff Berner's fine new klezmer album "Victory Party". His CD release party takes place March 12 at the W.I.S.E. Hall.
Take care all and umm, happy Lent?

Apologies for the lack of podcast last week, we were pre-empted with fairly short notice. In any case, we're back this week with more new roots music releases, and two interviews. We chatted with Johanne Dumas regarding this weekend's magnifique Festival du Bois, and then to Mae Moore about her Rogue Folk Club show on Saturday.
Take care all, and thanks so much for listening!

Tonight's husky-voiced host is me (thanks, going-around-work virus!) and I bring you two more hours of eclectic, mostly recent, roots releases. Of note is the new Cowboy Junkies tribute to Vic Chesnutt. We also learned during interview with Jon Cohen that Vic was recording in Montreal before his untimely death last year. Jon Cohen begins several months of touring with some Vancouver area gigs - see http://www.myspace.com/thejoncohenexperience

    Peace/out!

Yes, Dr. Connors turns 75 years young today and we played some Stompin' Tom love songs, what with Feb. 14 approaching.. Also had a phone chat with Mathias Tom of Spring Breakup, a Yukon-based duo whose songs are about love gone wrong. They'll be at the Biltmore Cabaret Feb. 13.
Whatever you get up to on Valentine's Day, hope it's good. Hope you enjoy this podcast. As always, many thanks for your support, fair listeners!

    hugs, val

Tonight's show featured two phone interviews: first with Ash Grunwald, calling a day ahead from Byron Bay, Australia! (gloating that he'd surfed twice today) Then we heard from Calgary's Lauren Mann, phoning from Penticton, BC. Both artists have shows in Vancouver and BC winter driving ahead! Wherever you may be listening, hope you're keeping warm and dry..

    cheers, val
