The 2010 Winter Olympics are but a (mostly) lovely memory, but the Cultural Olympiad continues. The Winter Paralympics begin March 12 and provide another opportunity to hear free musical performances in our city. We feature some of these artists on tonight's show - including the band who played at the Olympics closing ceremonies during the (in)famous "flying beavers" bit.

5 days of Winter Olympics madness thus far and the city is still standing, lo and behold. Tonight our little Folkalympiad featured the stylings of Reid Jamieson. Reid's a fairly recent West Coast transplant who hails from Toronto. (but we won't hold that against him) We look forward to the spring release of his new CD - locals can see him Feb. 20 at The Main on Main.

We tried to cover off on all these themes, with special focus on the wonderful music we'll be treated to in Vancouver over the next few weeks. We pay tribute to Oscar Brand, Winnipeg native & dj of world's longest-running radio show (it's folk!), who turns 90 this Sunday. Bob Marley, if he were still with us, would have turned 65 this weekend, so we pay tribute to him as well. At 8:30 we had a phone chat with Robbie Slade of local folk-electro duo Humans. They're performing at the New Forms Festival this weekend, a Cultural Olympiad event.

Can you believe we've already blown through the 1st month of 2010? Hope you enjoy tonight's show..we started things off with a track from the long-awaited Gil Scott-Heron CD. He's back and sounding great. Had a very pleasant studio session with local singer-songwriter Ben Sigston, who lugged a guitar *and* keyboard to our studios. Good work, Ben!

We paid musical tribute at the beginning and end of tonight's show to Canadian folk music icon Kate McGarrigle, who passed this week. She will be greatly missed.
We dug well into the new release bin this week, featuring local and not-so-local talent.
Apologies to anybody who attempted to download the Jan. 13 show and got nothing. Technical problem have been resolved but alas, we could not retrieve that show. C'est la vie!
