As we think about going forward, we also think about what God has done in the past. This week, while we celebrate what God has done, we also want to pay attention to where God is taking us through listening to the founding stories of Citylight.

Prayer is essential but it can be difficult especially in times of disappointment and suffering. The parable of the persistent widow reveals three ways we can be encouraged to not lose heart and continue to pray.

For the new year, we will be looking at how our work, broadly understood, can glorify God. Looking to the example of Bezalel from the Book of Exodus, we see how any kind of work can glorify God.

As we approach a new year with significant changes, we have much to look forward to, and some difficulties to endure. What kind of vision will strengthen us to serve faithfully today? There is value in looking back, where we have come from, and looking forward, where we would like to go. But, our greatest strength comes from looking up, at the sovereign God who rules the nations and orders history. This is Isaiah's vision.

In the conclusion to our Advent series we go back to the prophecy of Simeon and discover what the love of God means in the Bible.

Jesus' birth is announced to the shepherds by angels, and in their excitement over such a marvelous event they erupt in joy into songs of praise. The work of God through the ages culminates in this moment, where Christ has come and the promise of salvation becomes more than just hope, it becomes joy. And on this third Sunday of Advent, that is what we celebrate - Joy.

For the first week of Advent, our theme is hope. Jeremiah 29:11 famously promises a "future and a hope". Often, we misinterpret that as a promise for us, rather than for the Israelites in exile. But the promise of a future for them points to a new relationship between God and his people, one only made possible through Christ's coming and his death and resurrection. In the promises of Jeremiah 29 we see the hope of Christmas, through which God fulfills his greatest problem that we will be his people and he will be our God.

This week, continuing last week's sermon, we see that a life of faith always produces acts that flow from that faith as in the life of Abraham.
