Maggie is taking a few days off so we put together some of the best moments from the past few weeks. This hour, University of Wisconsin - Madison Prof. Yoshiko Herrara joins Maggie to discuss the Russian/Ukrainian war. And Wisconsin Democrats Chairperson Ben Wikler let's us know just what's at stake.
Maggie's celebration of Women's History Month continues with more from the women at Civic Media. Let's be honest for a minute: We only have so much time! We have a lot of boss babes around here. Melissa Kaye, from Civic's WFHR and WIRI in Wisconsin Rapids, joins Maggie to discuss her personal story of growing up in a cult. Melissa shares what her experience has taught her and how it leads her now as a news reporter. Plus, Maggie's Senior Producer, Jamie Martinson (she warps into Maggie's show from time to time), discusses her career in radio. With almost three decades under her belt, Jamie has been on-air and behind the scenes. She's done it all while raising her family. She even met her husband while working in radio. Coloring outside of the lines, in Jamie's opinion, is totally worth it.
Happy Women's History Month! Today, Maggie celebrates women in media. She starts the discussion with Professor. Ula Klein from University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh. Klein tells us why it's important for all of us to celebrate the accomplishments of women. Plus, the amazing and legendary Jane Matenaer (Civic's own) shares what got her interested in media. She's had a long career that's had some amazing moments...and some disgusting moments. Some that a lot of women may relate to - a fruit plate and limo are not asking too much. Jane also encourages all of us to take stock in what's happening around us and not be afraid to speak up when we see, hear or experience something that isn't right. Make sure you check out Jane's show weekdays from 10AM-12PM: https://civicmedia.us/shows/matenaer-on-air

Kathy Rulka, Co-Chair of the Wood County Democratic Party of WI, Nancy Stencil, Chair of the Marathon County Democratic Party and Chair of the 7th Congressional District, and Marcia Steele, Chair Winnebago County Democratic Party and Vice Chair 6th Congressional District, join Maggie this hour for "Broad Appeal." These three women are organizing in their counties and getting the job done. They say we all have more in common than not. In fact, we can agree that money should be eliminated from politics and that change starts in our communities. People are scared right now. Take the D and R out of the equation, we need to pay attention. Get more information about these county parties here: https://www.marathondems.com/ , https://www.winnebagodems.org/, and https://woodcountydems.org/
And remember to check out your county party if you want to get involved. The hope is in you. It's in your voice and in your vote.

Dr. Melinda Brennan, Executive Director of the Wisconsin ACLU, joins Maggie to discuss the current administration's immigration policy. The hard question - why should we care about what happens to immigrants? Caring means we care about due process, respect human dignity, and want the best outcome for our schools, communities and families and not destroy the economy in the process. This should be a problem we all care about on an ideological level. Dr. Brennan also explains that basic human rights are on the ballot on April 1. So vote early or vote on election day, but make your plan to vote. Plus, Jeramey Jannene from Urban Milwaukee joins Maggie for "Milwaukee As a Microcosm" to give an update on lead paint in Milwaukee schools. The news isn't good. More schools are now closed. You can read about it here: https://urbanmilwaukee.com/2025/03/13/mps-closing-three-more-schools-due-to-lead-hazards/.

We are in a Constitutional crisis. We have an administration that is actively and intentionally ignoring court orders. And as Maggie points out, courts do have jurisdiction over the president. That is a fact. Plus, Jason Stein from Wisconsin Policy Forum joins Maggie to discuss the state budget. Jason points out that the legislature is losing control of local school funding so it's being passed on through referendums and your property taxes. Governor Evers has proposed school funding to help alleviate that pinch. Ultimately, Jason believes schools will not see enough from state funding and will still look to referendums and property taxes. Jason also says the federal cuts could trickle down to the state. You can check out all of WPF's research at https://wispolicyforum.org/.
Mini Timmaraju from Reproductive Freedom for All and Amanda Zurawski, reproductive rights advocate, joins Maggie to discuss women's rights. They are rallying for Judge Susan Crawford celebrating the first day of early voting. Wisconsin knows how to elect fair judges, and we have the chance to do it again. Amanda, a Texas native, shares her personal story and the lack of reproductive options that almost killed her twice. The spring election is a referendum on the GOP's draconian policies.

Happy St. Patrick's Day! The celebration continues. Maggie shares her genealogy, which includes Irish roots. That's Maggie Hayes to you. In 1835, Maggie's family landed at Castle Garden in New York. And Ben Cottrell and Michaela Colestock from the Madison hurling team, the Madison Hailstones, joins Maggie to discuss the sport of hurling. The club is celebrating it's 18th birthday today, and it turns out Ben and Maggie have something in common - they are both from County Cork, Ireland. Hurling is an ancient sport that welcomes all ages and abilities. To check out this championship caliber team, check out https://www.madisonhailstones.com/.
It's St. Patrick's Day, and we're celebrating! Jeff Ksiazek from the Irish Fest School of Music in Milwaukee (https://irishfestschoolofmusic.com/) kicks off the festivities with a traditional Irish tin whistle (which is a lot different than his original jazz saxophone). Irish music has had a huge impact on music in general. There is a magical, interweaving that has taken place over the course of hundreds of years. And Corey Webster from the Irish Heritage Center in Milwaukee (https://www.ichc.net/)joins Maggie to talk parades, Irish traditions, and of course, culture and ancestry. Turns out green beer is not a traditional Irish drink. Who knew?
