  • Civic Media Spotlight for the Weekend of March 8th & 9th (Hour 1)

To begin the hour, Trygve Olson of The Lincoln Project shares some new research from the Lincoln Democracy Institute with the Todd Allbaugh Show. For the last year, they've been talking with thousands of Americans in swing states, including Wisconsin. These discussions went far beyond the typical poll, asking not just what people think, but WHY they think it. The results can teach us a lot about connecting with our neighbors and having difficult discussions.

Then on the Dom Salvia Show, Dom and Earl Ingram discuss a potential looming recession due to the economic chaos of the second Trump administration. The news is bad but the discussion is great!

Next on the Maggie Daun Show, Maggie is joined by guest co-host Tom Palzewicz. Jeff, a conservative caller from Superior, explains why he believes Trump has the right to change laws. Turns out the Constitution, as Jeff believes, does not give Trump that right.

Finally, Milwaukee Film Critic, Matt Mueller joins the Nite Lite with Pete Schwaba. Matt and Pete talk about Adrien Brody's long acceptance speech at the Oscars, the winners of awards and their thoughts, and what should've been nominated but wasn't.

  • Sleep On It

Political Scientist Professor from the University of Wisconsin - Madison Yoshiko Herrera joins Maggie to discuss Donald Trump's Ukraine/Russia foreign policy. It's been quite a ride in! The lack of pressure on Russia doesn't stop Russia. It leads to more fighting. The prospect of war in the US is remote. The prospect of war in Europe, however, is not remote. Plus, Dr. Deepa Burman, Pediatric Sleep Medicine Specialist from the University of Pittsburgh, joins Maggie to help us adjust to the time change. Both kids and adults can have trouble adapting to moving our clocks forward. Dr. Burman says pushing up our bedtime just a few minutes leading up to the change can help us regulate our sleep schedule. She also says there is definitely a correlation between screen time and trouble sleeping. Dr. Burman also encourages us to try and be consistent with our sleep schedule. It's easier said than done! For better sleep, here is what Dr. Burman suggests: Consistency is key, shut off the screens 30-45 minutes before bed, get morning bright light, and dim the lights at night.

  • President Whiplash

Tom Palzewicz is Maggie's guest co-host today. President Trump continues to issue...unissue...then reissue executive orders. Rinse and repeat. It's exhausting, but as Maggie and Tom point out, Donald Trump is the president for all people. He needs to answer to the middle class, not just the billionaire class. When it comes to the federal government, the amount the US spends on the people is less than 10 percent of the budget. Under this current administration, people are being interfered with in their daily lives, and it hurts.

  • Numbers Don’t Lie

It's almost the weekend! Tom Palzewicz, the most reasonable guy in politics, joins Maggie as her guest host. They dig right in with Prof. Charles Franklin from Marquette University. He's got a new poll, and it turns out, voters really haven't learned as much as they need to know going into the spring election. Only four weeks to go...It's coming up on April 1. Check your voter registration and/or voting precinct by visiting https://myvote.wi.gov/en-us/. And overall, Wisconsin independents aren't super excited about what they've seen from Trump or Musk so far.

  • Actions Speak Louder Than Words

Sen. Dianne Hesselbein (27th Senate District) joins Maggie for "Broad Appeal." Sen. Hesselbein discusses how she got her start in politics 20 years ago. It all started with a school board run. She also says the new Democratic faces in the state assembly and senate (thanks to the new maps) are forcing more "across the aisle" conversations. And Sen. Hesselbein discusses how the federal tax cuts are affecting Wisconsinites. These are real issues affecting real people. She implores anyone experiencing issues due to these cuts to call her office: (608) 266-6670. It's also time to get "Over the Hump and Trump." Today, after Trump's Congressional address, Maggie asks you to find the things that bring you joy. And if there is a topic you want her to discuss on "The Maggie Daun Show," she'd like to know Email [email protected]. It can anything - sports, arts, organizations. She's all ears!

  • Who Watches the Watchers?

It's another visit from Gray Gunderson with "Your Neck of the Woods." Even the Northwoods is not immune to the federal DOGE cuts as Maggie and Gray discuss. Plus, the chicken nugget rivalry between Spooner and Hayward is real! Jeramy Jannene from Urban Milwaukee also joins Maggie for "Milwaukee in A Microcosm." Jeramy discusses the closure of a Milwaukee school due to ongoing problems with lead poisoning that reached a new level. You can read more here:

  • Operating in Bad Faith

Jeff Mandell from Law Forward joins Maggie to start this hour. The Wisconsin Supreme Court election is quickly approaching (less than a month away!). This election is a referendum on whether we want our government to work for all us or only for a few. For over 100 years, Wisconsin Open Meetings law has required government business to be conducted in public. As Jeff explains though, Brad Schimel doesn't believe in that kind of transparency. To read more about this conversation, check out Jeff's editorial: https://captimes.com/opinion/guest-columns/opinion-case-demonstrates-schimels-disregard-for-the-law/article_b1db02ba-f47f-11ef-8894-df6a5b6ae1b4.html.

David Crowley, the 7th County Executive of Milwaukee County, also joins Maggie to discuss how potential federal budget cuts are going to affect municipal governments. This is an alarming issue effects rural and urban people throughout the state. One in five people receive care through Medicaid. These proposed cuts would be devastating to this country's seniors and children. We all have a role to play when it comes to stopping what is happening at the federal level. If you email your Republican representatives, make sure to include state Democratic leaders so they have a record.

  • The Numbers Don’t Add Up

Dan Shafer is back with another edition of "State Slate." So much on the federal side. So much on the state side. Maggie and Dan remind us that we are less than one month away from the spring election, and Brad Schimel still won't tell Wisconsin voters what his opinion is. Meghan Roh, Program Director at Opportunity Wisconsin, also joins Maggie this hour to discuss the budget resolution that green-lights serious cuts to Medicaid, SNAP, and other critical programs. These cuts pay for tax breaks for the ultra wealthy. Republicans say they aren't cuts, but the math isn't mathing. So why are Wisconsin Republicans lying to their constituents? Maggie and Meghan also discussed Rep. Derrick VanOrden's refusal to hold (or even show up to) town hall meetings. Tell them how you feel:

    Rep. Derrick Van Orden
    Washington DC - (202) 225-5506
    LaCrosse - (608) 782-2558
    Eu Claire - (715) 831-9214
    Rep. Bryan Steil

  • Here’s Where We Are

Greta Bedekovics from the Center of American Progress joins Maggie to discuss the SAVE Act. Are you a married women? Turns out, you're going to have a harder time voting. The SAVE Act isn't really saving anything but women from voting. If this law were enacted tomorrow, in Wisconsin, it would lock out 1.3 million women from voting in the April 1 election. You can check out the latest on the SAVE Act from the Center of American Progress: https://www.americanprogress.org/article/the-save-act-would-disenfranchise-millions-of-citizens/ .

Plus, Karina Tweedell from the non-profit group Wisconsin Ukrainians also joins Maggie this hour. Karina explains that Ukrainians living in Wisconsin are concerned, and this is about more than Ukraine. It's about defending the West. The world order is in jeopardy. Check out more on this organization and what you can do to help or get involved: https://www.wisconsin-ukrainians.org/.
