As County Clare has enjoyed a spell of warm Spring weather over the past week or so, Uisce Éireann is sharing some simple steps.

This is so we can all help conserve water and safeguard our precious water supplies now and into the summer.

Atlantic Aviation Group (AAG) has welcomed an announcement by the Department of Further and Higher Education and the National Apprenticeship Office regarding a significant expansion of aircraft mechanic apprenticeship places across Ireland.

As part of the expansion, the Shannon-based company will deliver 75 additional training places from September of this year, playing a key role in the national effort to double annual apprenticeship intake from 79 to 160.

The National Library of Ireland, in conjunction with the Environmental Protection Agency, have collaborated for the first time ever on a 'Photographer-In-Residence', Paula T Nolan.

Paula’s project, titled ‘ReViewing Ireland: A Photo Study of Ireland’s Environment’, involves travelling via public transport nationwide over the course of a year to take photos of environmental interest capturing the changing Irish environment, which will conclude in a collection of photographs of all 26 counties, to be added to the National Photographic collections.

As part of her project, Paula is visiting Clare and has been connecting directly with local community groups and organisations.

County Clare has been successful in its bid to become the first county-wide certified sustainable tourism destination in Ireland.

The Banner County has been awarded Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) Destination Certification, recognised as a global leader in managing standards for sustainable travel and tourism, following a visit to Clare last month by certifying body EarthCheck.

To discuss this further, Alan Morrissey was joined by Deirdre O’Shea, Head of Tourism with Clare County Council, and Carol Gleeson, Manager of the Burren and Cliffs of Moher UNESCO Global Geopark and Green Team member.

The number of people seeking asylum here has dropped 40 per cent in the past year.

Figures for the first three months of the year show just over 3-thousand people arrived here seeking international protection, compared to 5-thousand-100 during the same time last year.

The data also shows the number of deportation orders tripled in the first three months of the year, from just over 300 to just over 1-thousand.

However, Harry McGee, Political Correspondent with The Irish Times, says only 40 per cent of people given the orders have left the country...

Clare has received just over 1% of a fund intended to assist in the acquisition of second-hand social homes. Housing Minister James Browne has announced that €325 million is to be made available to local authorities for the purpose of acquiring second-hand social houses and has asked that Tenant in Situ acquisitions be prioritised. Clare County Council's allocation amounts to €4 million which makes up just 1.2% of the total fund. Member of Clare's Social Development Strategic Policy Committee, Shannon Fine Gael Councillor Tony Mulcahy, says while the funding is welcome, it won't go very far.
