The Government has given the green light to a plan to develop a State-led liquified natural gas terminal.
The plan was brought before a meeting of the Cabinet by Minister for Transport, Environment, Climate and Energy, Darragh O'Brien on Wednesday.
Minister for Transport, Environment, Climate and Energy, Darragh O'Brien brought the plan before a meeting of the Cabinet this morning.
The floating facility, which would be located at a coastal location, would serve Ireland’s emergency gas reserve.
The news is being welcomed by Minister of State at the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Michael Healy Rae, who feels the decision has opened the door to progress the long-term Shannon Estuary project.
However, liquified natural gas is a controversial form of gas, and many have expressed environmental and ecological concerns and concerns over an LNG terminal being located at the Shannon Estuary, were it to be located there.
To discuss this further, Alan Morrissey was joined by Minister of State at the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine, TD Michael Healy Rae, and lecturer at University of Galway, Dr Sinéad Sheehan.
