The legacy of a community activist credited with transforming the future for generations of young people in Kilrush will be commemorated with a new structure.

A plaque will be erected at the John Paul Estate in the West Clare Town, in memory of Fianna Fáil Councillor, Stephen O'Gorman, who passed away in 2012.

During his twenty-years of service, Stephen spearheaded efforts to combat criminality, drug activity and anti-social behaviour in deprived areas often at great personal risk and persevered through numerous attacks against himself and family members.

Cathaoirleach of the West Clare Municipal District and Kilrush Independent Councillor Ian Lynch says everyone in the town owes a debt of gratitude to Stephen and his story must be remembered.

This Sunday will mark the fifth anniversary of the death of Micheál ‘Mick’ Ryan.

The Lahinch native was killed when the Boeing 737 Max Aircraft he was travelling on from Addis Ababa to Nairobi on the 10th of March, 2019 crashed minutes after take-off, killing all 157 people on board.

‘Mick’s’ widow, Naoise Ryan has continued to fight for justice for her late husband.

That fight for justice has been frustrated by the 2021 deferred-prosecution agreement the US Government made with Boeing over that crash and the Lion Air plane which crashed shortly after takeoff in Indonesia on October 29th, 2018, resulting in the death of all 189 passengers and crew.

However, the incident involving the Boeing 737 Max 9 Alaska Airlines jet in early January, in which a door plug blew out mid-air, has potentially changed matters.

To discuss this further, Alan Morrissey spoke with Naoise Ryan.

Today is International Women’s Day.

The annual global event, celebrated on the 8th of March each year, serves as a focal point for recognizing the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women worldwide.

On Friday's Morning Focus, Alan Morrissey was joined by Denise O’Brien, CEO of O’Brien Learning Solutions, Petrina O’Halloran, Founder of Birth and Beyond and also runs Mama’s Boobie Box, mum Blogger and writer for online magazine Boobingit.com.

There are high hopes for Ivanna McMahon who hails from Barefield, as she is representing Ireland at this year’s Miss World competition.

Ivanna, who was Miss Ireland 2022, is one of 112 women competing for the title at the 71st Miss World in India.

Miss World 2023 is being held in Mumbai this Saturday, with the lead-up to the event having gotten underway in India on February 18th last.

Rosanna Davison was the last Irish woman to be named Miss World, back in 2003.
