Have you ever thought about which voice in your mind you give the microphone to? We all have a cacophony of voices in our brain fighting to be heard and acknowledged, but have you ever wondered which ones are the most dominant? Is it that 5-year-old who’s loud and opinionated, but maybe lacks the perspective of someone older and more experienced? Is your inner skeptic’s volume turned up to 11? In the season three finale episode of Clarity Cafe, Barb and Cali discuss how we can all learn and practice curating the voices in our head in order to raise the volume on the more positive ones, and quiet the ones that amplify our self-doubt, anxiety, and so on. This is a super juicy and helpful episode for anyone who wants to cultivate an inner voice that serves them better.

In this episode, Cali and Barb chat about what it means to be a good listener, and then they dive into ways to improve our listening skills. Spoiler alert! The first step involves learning how to truly listen to ourselves. Underneath all of the static and noise of our busy minds are our true thoughts and feelings. Once we learn how to listen to that quiet part of our brain, we can then listen more profoundly to others. And by listening, they mean listening without feeling the need to react or respond. The result is a conversation where both you and your loved one feels safe and heard.

Many of us tell each other how terrible we are at saying goodbye. We avoid it. We rush through it. We choke down any emotions that begin to gurgle up. But why? Why are we so bad as a society at saying goodbye? And how can we more directly honor that ending moment—whether it’s a great neighbor who’s moving away, our last day at a job, or a relationship that we know is ready to end. In this episode, Cali and Barb navigate through the different scenarios, illuminating ways for us to more directly (and with greater clarity) say our goodbyes.

Your friend has a problem. A real problem. And you’ve gone through the exact same thing! Every single cell in your body wants to tell them what they should do, how they should handle it, and how they can avoid the mistakes you made. After all, they’re your friend and you want to help. The intention is sooo good. But… and there is a but… sometimes you need to let people go through things their own way. Everyone needs to learn their own life lessons in whatever way is unique to them and their experiences. That instinct to dive in and immerse your loved one in what you believe is the answer to their problems is lovely. However, sometimes the best way you can support someone is by listening with neutrality, asking permission before sharing your similar situation, and then allowing them to take responsibility for their own choices. Sound impossible? It’s not! Listen in and find out how you can do it!

Are making decisions challenging for you? Even for those of us who consider ourselves to be swift decision makers, sometimes we stall out on a particular choice due to anxiety, confusion, and stress. In this episode, Barb and Cali guide us through ways to get some perspective on why making some decisions leave us so rattled. If we can take a step back and take the time to break down each aspect of an upcoming choice, we can get some much needed clarity on what’s truly driving the stress we’re feeling over making the decision. It can be stress about other people, stress over not having all of the answers yet, of the unknown, or even the fear of failure. So listen in and learn how to separate out all of these compounding forces so you can take the weight off your mind and begin making stress-free decisions.

Everyone has their own style of communication. For some who have been diagnosed with ADHD, like Cali herself, communication—externally and internally—does not follow social norms. Many of us have a one-lane mental highway when we communicate, allowing us to open a topic, discuss it, and then close it out before we jump into an entirely new subject. Cali’s brain however, usually has something more akin to a six-lane highway. Each road has its own topic, goes in its own direction, and may be just as important as the other five topics. With such a divergent way of communicating, how can we be sure to still have productive, effective, and supportive conversations? Listen in and find out!
