he opinion in the Google search antitrust case, published Monday, is extremely long. Because this was a bench trial, Judge Amit Mehta was on the hook to make factual findings as well as legal findings. So, there are over a hundred pages of findings of fact and even more of conclusions of law, adding up to a 286-page document replete with footnotes, redactions, and even an illustrative graphic of a search result for “golf-shorts” (which, apparently, came up a lot at trial).

The ruling in United States v. Google is a lot to take in. Some of it was previously reported in the press over the course of the weekslong trial; but here, the judge has inadvertently compiled the trial’s greatest hits: catty quotes from executives, embarrassing internal studies, and a bunch of surprising deets about that multibillion-dollar contract that keeps Google the default search engine in Safari.

Wall Street's stock sell-off intensified in a major way Monday as concerns mounted over the health of the US economy. The Dow Jones Industrial Average (^DJI) fell over 1,000 points. The Nasdaq Composite (^IXIC) was crushed by more than 3.4%. The S&P 500's (^GSPC) losses cascaded nearly 3% in its worst day since 2022, capping its worst start to any month since 2002.

Wall Street's "fear gauge" — the CBOE Volatility Index (^VIX) — touched its highest level since the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic, before retreating. Treasury yields fell, with the benchmark 10-year Treasury yield (^TNX) hovering near 3.8%.

Avi Schiffmann shows up to the WIRED office with a Friend hanging around his neck. It dangles there like a pendant on a necklace. It’s about the size and shape of an AirTag—a soft, round little puck that rests right next to Schiffmann’s heart, just atop the Dark Side of the Moon logo on the shirt behind it.

The Friend, to be clear, is an AI wearable. It’s a pal, a buddy, but mostly an AI chatbot that lives inside the pendant. It always has an opinion to share about what’s going on around it, which it communicates using text messages and push notifications on the phone it’s paired to.

Schiffmann and his Friend (this one’s name is Emily) have come to WIRED’s San Francisco office to meet with me and my colleague Reece Rogers to talk publicly about this new AI wearable for the first time. Before we get started, I tell Schiffmann I’d like to record our chat and ask if he’s cool with that. This is considered a good journalistic practice, sure, but also it’s a legal requirement in California, which requires two-party consent before taping a private interaction. So I ask permission to turn on a tape recorder and Schiffmann just laughs.

July 30 (Reuters) - Microsoft (MSFT.O), opens new tab said it would spend more money this fiscal year to build out AI infrastructure even as growth slowed in its cloud business, another sign the payoff from hefty investments in the technology may take longer than Wall Street had hoped.Shares fell 7% on the spending forecast but pared losses to trade down 4% after the bell on Tuesday after Microsoft said on a post-earnings call that Azure cloud growth would accelerate in the second half of fiscal 2025.Big technology companies have been pouring billions of dollars into data centers to capitalize on the generative AI boom. Google-parent Alphabet (GOOGL.O), opens new tab warned last week that its capital spending would stay elevated for the rest of the year.Microsoft said its capital spending rose 77.6% to $19 billion in its fiscal fourth quarter that ends June 30, with cloud and AI-related spending accounting for nearly all of the expenditures. For all of fiscal 2024, capital spending totaled $55.7 billion.Group CFO Amy Hood said the spending was necessary to support demand for AI services and the company was investing in assets that "will be monetized over 15 years and beyond."Still, investors who have run up Microsoft stock by nearly a quarter in the past 12 months on AI optimism were disappointed with the Azure growth.

Instead, The Wall Street Journal reports, Twitch has fizzled: It's losing money on annual revenue of $2 billion — a nothingburger by Amazon's standards — and usage seems stalled.

This year, the company reportedly cut a third of Twitch's staff, and there's worry about its place in Amazon at a time when CEO Andy Jassy is looking to tighten the company's focus.

A vexing phenomenon is plaguing the labor market. "Ghost jobs" refer to listings by employers that either aren't real or have already been filled but never lead to an actual hire. This is frustrating not only to job seekers but also to the Federal Reserve, which is trying to steer the economy to a stable place.

The official unemployment rate here in the U.S. has been at historic lows for a while now, but there are still stories of job seekers who are not hearing back from potential employers. Our colleagues over at The Indicator, Darian Woods and Wailin Wong, explain why these so-called ghost jobs seem to be on the rise.

DETROIT (AP) — Tesla’s second-quarter net income fell 45% compared with a year ago as the company’s global electric vehicle sales tumbled despite price cuts and low-interest financing.

The Austin, Texas, company said Tuesday that it made $1.48 billion from April through June, less than the $2.7 billion it made in the same period of 2023. It was Tesla’s second-straight quarterly net income decline.

Second quarter revenue rose 2% to $25.5 billion, beating Wall Street estimates of $24.54 billion, according to FactSet. Excluding one time items, Tesla made 52 cents per share, below analyst expectations of 61 cents.

Shares of Tesla fell about 8% in trading after Tuesday’s closing bell. The shares had been down more than 40% earlier in the year, but have since recovered most of the losses.
