We start with a discussion about immigration and the controversy surrounding the treatment of white South African refugees compared with people from other African countries. From there, we get into a much bigger conversation about race, government policies, stereotypes, and how laws and the people enforcing them can affect people's lives.

Then we take a hard look at gun laws and accountability following a Minnesota mass shooting. We discuss how gun permits are reviewed, the warning signs and previous legal history surrounding the suspect, and the questions being raised about whether different decisions could have prevented the tragedy. We also talk about an ICE officer arrested for suspected drunk driving, including the body-camera footage, her request for special consideration because she was a federal officer, and the questions surrounding why she remained on the job while her case continued. And because this is Cold World, we don't stay serious the entire time. It’s Friday on Cold World w/ DVJ & Michelle, and we’re keeping it real—from politics and race to self-worth, personal growth, sports, life, and some seriously disturbing stories.

We start with a conversation about respect, race, and workplace inequality, including the experiences of Latino workers and the kinds of jobs and opportunities people are offered. The discussion digs into how assumptions, stereotypes, and a lack of respect can affect people in everyday life.

Then we get into a powerful conversation about self-worth and personal growth, inspired by Styles P. What does it mean to understand your value? How do you become a better version of yourself without beating yourself up along the way? The message is simple: growth is a process, struggle is part of it, and you are valuable. We also react to a disturbing police/bodycam incident involving a school counselor and a 15-year-old girl, discussing the circumstances, the investigation, and the behavior captured in the footage.

With September 11 approaching, we take a moment to remember the people who lost their lives on 9/11 and talk about the long-lasting ripple effects of tragedy on families, communities, and survivors.

And, of course, there’s plenty of NFL talk, including the start of football season, Week 1 excitement, injuries, Brett Favre, and the controversy surrounding the misuse of Mississippi welfare funds. We also talk about something that gets overlooked way too often: life itself. This episode of Cold World w/ DVJ & Michelle takes us into some seriously disturbing territory.

We start with a Louisiana parole hearing, where a parolee who had previously been given an opportunity for substance-abuse treatment is brought back before the board after new violations. The panel ultimately revokes his parole, sparking a conversation about second chances, consequences, addiction, and the choices that can change the course of your life. Then it's Crime Time—a disturbing murder investigation involving a man found with multiple stab wounds while investigators also deal with a house fire. Police question a woman who appears to have information about the victim, and the investigation becomes even more intense when detectives confront her with surveillance footage and evidence connecting her to the scene. The case takes an even darker turn as investigators question her about the victim, an alleged poisoning, their relationship, domestic violence, and the circumstances surrounding his death. She ultimately maintains that she never poisoned him, while the case presented in the episode ends with a murder conviction and a life sentence with the possibility of parole after 30 years.

And then we switch gears to a DUI/bodycam encounter involving a father traveling with his children. Officers question him about drinking, his driving, and whether he is impaired before asking him to perform field-sobriety exercises. The encounter also leads into a much bigger conversation about law enforcement, immigration, race, identity, and the treatment of people on opposite sides of the badge. As always, we're breaking down what we're watching, questioning what we're seeing, and having the conversations that don't always fit neatly into a box.

We start with intense police footage involving a man accused of driving impaired with his children in the vehicle. The situation gets heated as officers question him about how much he has been drinking, conduct field sobriety testing, and ultimately take him into custody. The conversation goes beyond the traffic stop and into the dangers of impaired driving, personal responsibility, and the consequences that can affect an entire family. Things get even more serious when we discuss the interaction between law enforcement, race, immigration, and identity. We break down what happens when an officer repeatedly questions a man's background and where he is "from," and we talk about the racial dynamics we see playing out during the stop.

We also dive into a prison case involving a teenager convicted in a crime spree that resulted in a sheriff's deputy being killed and another person being wounded. That leads us into a much bigger conversation about crime, incarceration, parole, and how those stories can become political ammunition.

And then we turn our attention to Wisconsin politics and the upcoming governor's race. We talk about political advertising, crime messaging, parole, Governor Tony Evers, David Crowley, and the importance of paying attention to what political campaigns are actually telling voters. Of course, there's plenty of everyday Cold World mixed in—food, music, Chewie, laundry, random conversations, and everything else that happens when two people are just sitting around talking about what's going on in the world.
