On this episode of Cold World w/ DVJ & Michelle, it’s another one of those conversations where you never quite know where the next topic is going to take you.

The episode opens with a disturbing Florida animal-abuse allegation involving a woman, her family dog, surveillance footage, and claims from friends that she was framed by her estranged husband. DVJ and Michelle talk through the allegations, the conflicting stories, and why sometimes you have to wait for the facts before deciding what really happened.

Then it’s back to everyday life.

DVJ takes listeners along for a real-life Milwaukee errand run—from grabbing laundry detergent and groceries to dealing with quarters, the bank, apartment laundry, rising rent, broken elevators, potholes, and all the little things that can turn a simple trip to the store into a whole story.

There’s plenty of food talk, mushroom coffee, Chewy’s homemade meals, Packers football, Milwaukee sports radio, local personalities, grocery stores, driving habits, and the question everyone has probably asked at some point: Why don't people use their turn signals?!

But underneath all the jokes and everyday complaints is a bigger conversation about common courtesy, community, kindness, and empathy.

DVJ talks about leaving laundry supplies in the shared laundry room so neighbors can use them, and how one small act of kindness can create a ripple effect. The conversation turns into a reminder that sometimes doing something good for somebody doesn't have to be announced, posted, or rewarded.

You just do it.

And maybe that person does something good for someone else.

That’s the heart of this episode: real life, real experiences, humor, difficult conversations, and hopefully a little reminder to keep your empathy gene switched on.

DVJ and Michelle start with sports, talking Packers football, the Bears, NASCAR, hockey fights, and the way violence and conflict are covered differently across professional sports. That leads into a much bigger conversation about race, media coverage, stereotypes, and how athletes can be portrayed depending on who they are and what sport they play.

The discussion then gets serious as they talk about domestic violence involving athletes and public figures, including questions about why some stories receive enormous media attention while other allegations or cases seem to disappear from the conversation.

They also discuss cases involving police officers, corrections officers, and other people in positions of authority who have faced criminal convictions, including the death of a detainee, alleged misconduct, abuse of power, and questions about accountability within the justice system.

Another major topic is immigration detention and conditions reported at Fort Bliss in Texas, including allegations of physical and sexual abuse, medical-care problems, food shortages, deaths, and violations identified during inspections. The conversation looks at what happens when people in government custody are dependent on the system for their basic safety and care.

And because this is Cold World, the episode doesn't stay serious the entire time. The conversation moves into Israel and Palestine, the phrase “Free Palestine,” the distinction between criticizing a government and criticizing an entire group of people, and the human cost of conflict. They also get into immigration and the different ways people can be perceived based on race, appearance, language, and where others assume they come from. The discussion questions why some immigrants seem to face more scrutiny than others—and why businesses that rely on immigrant labor often remain part of everyday American life. The conversation then turns to incarceration, punishment, and whether people who are quick to say “lock them up” really understand what life inside segregation or solitary confinement can be like.

And of course, Cold World wouldn't be Cold World without the unexpected detours—including Chewy's dinner, lima beans, green beans, everyday life, and everything else that somehow makes its way into the conversation. 😂
