How can everything get more expensive while working people are still struggling to make enough to live?

DVJ and Michelle get into it after watching Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez defend raising the minimum wage and push back on the idea that policies like higher wages and universal healthcare somehow mean America is becoming communist.

That opens the door to a much bigger conversation about working-class America, rent, wages, tips, healthcare, overdraft fees, payday loans, and what happens when your paycheck disappears before you've even paid the rest of your bills.

DVJ also shares personal experiences from working low-wage jobs and explains why he believes the people working restaurants, grocery stores, hotels, and other everyday jobs are the ones keeping communities running.

Then the episode takes a serious historical turn.

DVJ and Michelle revisit the 1931 Scottsboro Boys case, where nine Black teenagers were arrested after accusations made by two white women on a train. The discussion follows the trials, death sentences, questions surrounding the evidence, Ruby Bates' later recantation, the Supreme Court decisions, and the years some of the young men spent imprisoned.

Black mugshots used as sniper targets?

That disturbing story kicks off a much bigger conversation on this episode of Cold World.

DVJ and Michelle discuss a police sniper-training program in North Miami that was suspended after old mugshots of Black suspects were reportedly used as target images during firearms training. The conversation turns to the question of how something like that could happen—and why nobody stopped to question it sooner.

From there, they look at several Wisconsin cases involving racial harassment, intimidation, threats, and conflicts between Black or Latino residents and white neighbors. They discuss the alleged conduct, the legal consequences in the cases they cover, and the uncomfortable question of what happens when someone's race becomes the reason they are targeted in their own neighborhood.

The discussion starts with Wisconsin's 2026 governor's race and the possibility of David Crowley becoming Wisconsin's first Black governor. From there, the conversation expands into race, gender, representation, and what Americans have historically considered a “presidential” or “gubernatorial” candidate.

They also discuss Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez's comments about potentially running for president, including her acknowledgment that being a woman and Latina raises questions about electability. The bigger question becomes: Can America imagine a Latina woman as president—and what does history tell us about who America has been comfortable putting in positions of power?
