Should America preserve its racist history so we can learn from it—or remove the symbols that continue to hurt people?

That's the question at the heart of this episode of Cold World w/ DVJ & Michelle.

We dive into the Jim Crow Museum of Racist Imagery at Ferris State University and explore why a museum would intentionally display racist advertisements, toys, postcards, household products, photographs, segregation signs and other objects from America's past.

The goal isn't to celebrate those objects.

It's to confront them.

We talk about how racist imagery wasn't limited to laws and government policy—it was also embedded in popular culture, advertising, entertainment and everyday products, helping stereotypes become normalized for generations.

And then we get into the bigger question:

What should we do with racist symbols today?

Should Confederate monuments stay where they are?

Should they be moved into museums?

Should controversial names and symbols be removed?

Should offensive historical objects be destroyed—or preserved so future generations can see what actually happened?

DVJ & Michelle don't necessarily see everything the same way, and that's part of the conversation.

We talk about Confederate monuments, Confederate names, racist mascots, the Confederate flag, racial stereotypes and the uncomfortable history behind symbols many Americans encounter without knowing the full story.

We also look at the timing of many Confederate monuments and how numerous monuments were erected decades after the Civil War, including during periods when Black Americans were fighting segregation, disenfranchisement and racial violence.

And then the conversation becomes personal.

❤️ LIFE IS SHORT.

After talking about Dolly Parton's life and death, DVJ reflects on something we all eventually have to confront:

We're here for a limited amount of time.

We work.

We build relationships.

We raise families.

We accomplish things.

We make mistakes.

We try to leave something behind.

And then one day, it's over.

That leads to a surprisingly emotional conversation about aging, mortality, wanting to live longer, and why we should give people their flowers while they're still here.

We also talk about Dolly Parton's public support for racial justice and her decision to change the name of the Dixie Stampede after learning about the word's connection to the Confederacy.

Sometimes an accident is just an accident. But sometimes a moment of carelessness changes lives forever.

On this episode of Cold World w/ DVJ & Michelle, we start with something completely different—a conversation about relationships, household responsibilities and who does what at home.

Who cooks?

Who cleans?

Who does the laundry?

Who runs the errands?

And should couples really think in terms of “that's your job”—or should you simply step up when something needs to be done?

DVJ and Michelle talk about how they divide responsibilities in their own relationship and why they don't necessarily believe in rigid “men's jobs” and “women's jobs.”

Then the episode takes a VERY different turn.

🚨 A 3-YEAR-OLD PULLS THE TRIGGER

We discuss a disturbing Racine County, Wisconsin hunting accident in which investigators said a 3-year-old child pulled the trigger of a 12-gauge shotgun during a turkey hunt.

The gunfire struck a 40-year-old man and his 7-year-old son. According to the report discussed in the episode, the child victim suffered serious injuries, including pellets lodged in his spinal cord, skull and brain. The incident raises serious questions about gun safety, hunter education and how young children should be introduced to firearms.

Then there's another bizarre and tragic accident out of Apple Valley, Minnesota.

A tree-trimming worker was allegedly trying to use the shadow of a machine to make it appear as though the machine was grabbing his coworker's shadow. Instead, he operated the actual grapple without monitoring the equipment or his coworker—and the machine crushed the man's head.

The coworker died, and the man operating the equipment was arrested and charged with second-degree manslaughter.

🚔 AND THEN WE HEAD TO WAUKESHA

We also listen to police footage from a disturbing Waukesha incident involving a 21-year-old mother and her very young child.

Police were initially trying to determine where the child was after the mother appeared confused about whether she had picked him up from daycare. Officers questioned her about alcohol consumption and eventually learned that other people had information about where the child was.

The investigation ultimately located the child at a residence, and the child's father was contacted regarding custody.

The situation raises some serious questions about alcohol, parenting, mental health, personal responsibility and what happens when a child's safety becomes a concern.

And, as always, we don't just play the clips.

We talk about them.

On this episode of Cold World w/ DVJ & Michelle, we start with a little taste of Cold World Crime Time, including a chilling clip from Michelle's Diane Downs episode. Diane claimed that a mysterious gunman attacked her and her three children—but investigators found problems with her story, and one of the most important pieces of evidence would ultimately come from her surviving daughter, Christie.

Then we get back to real life.

It's Monday morning.

DVJ is up early, Michelle is still in bed, and DVJ is headed out to the grocery store.

And from there?

Well… you know how Cold World goes. 😂

But somewhere between the grocery aisles and the drive home, the conversation gets deeper.

🧠 THE REAL CONVERSATION

DVJ talks about something much bigger than groceries:

CHANGE.

He explains that people can't really change their circumstances until they're willing to change the way they think about things.

He reflects on his own past and how he eventually had to recognize that changing his life meant changing his thinking first.

And then the conversation moves into something everybody can relate to:

ANGER.

Getting angry is natural.

Being upset is natural.

But what happens after you get angry?

Do you fight?

Do you lash out?

Do you say something you'll regret?

Or do you stop and decide that whatever happened simply isn't worth giving your peace away?

DVJ's point is that while someone else can trigger an emotion, we still have choices about what we do with that emotion.

And that's where this episode gets surprisingly meaningful.

Because sometimes the hardest person to change…

is ourselves.

Route 66 is supposed to represent freedom, adventure and the open road.

But what if the most famous highway in America has a much darker story?

On this episode of Cold World w/ DVJ & Michelle, we go from race and identity to Big Brother, Black history, comedy and one seriously dark chapter of American road-trip history.

We start with a candid conversation about race, skin color and the way Black people can be perceived by others.

We talk about colorism, stereotypes, the idea that darker skin can be unfairly associated with being threatening or dangerous, and why some people can develop negative feelings toward someone they've never even met simply because of their appearance.

That conversation takes us into American immigration history, including the discrimination experienced by Irish, Italian and Jewish immigrants and the larger question of how America has historically treated people who were considered “different.”

Then we take a step back in time.

🚨 ENTER: ROUTE 66.

DVJ & Michelle are watching a travel channel following someone traveling the historic highway—and that sends us down a rabbit hole.

We discover that Route 66 has a dark and violent history involving organized crime, outlaw gangs, bank robberies, kidnappings, police shootouts and notorious murders.

We talk about the Al Capone era, when Chicago organized crime allegedly spilled into communities along the Route 66 corridor, as well as notorious criminals who used the highway as a getaway route.

Then there's the chilling history of the Budville Trading Post murders in New Mexico, where multiple people connected to the location were killed over several years.

And we discuss the Welch family murders, where a family was killed while camping alongside Route 66, leaving their four young boys stranded beside the highway and desperately trying to flag down passing motorists for help.

Suddenly, that nostalgic road trip doesn't sound quite so innocent. 😳

The Mother Road has a history.

And some of it is bloody.

What happens when the same situation looks completely different depending on who you are?

On this episode of Cold World w/ DVJ & Michelle, we start with the morning news, coffee and everyday conversation—but quickly find ourselves talking about some uncomfortable realities surrounding ICE, law enforcement, race, power and the way people are perceived.

DVJ brings several lesser-known ICE criminal cases to the conversation, including cases involving corruption, abuse of authority and alleged misconduct inside immigration detention.

One case involves a former ICE deportation officer who pleaded guilty after transporting approximately $700,000 in money he believed was connected to drug trafficking, while using the privileges associated with his federal law-enforcement position.

Another involves a former ICE detention officer who pleaded guilty to sexually abusing a woman while she was in federal custody, raising serious questions about power, vulnerability and accountability inside detention facilities.

But we don't stop there.

The conversation turns toward race and everyday experiences—the things that may seem insignificant to one person but can feel very different when you're Black or Brown.

We talk about personal space, public places, neighborhoods, driving, being watched, being treated like you don't belong, and the assumptions people can make when they see someone who doesn't fit the image they expect to see.

DVJ gives an example of a Black man driving through a suburban neighborhood looking for a friend's house—and how something completely innocent can potentially be interpreted as suspicious simply because of who is behind the wheel.

And that leads to the bigger question:

Who gets the benefit of the doubt?

We talk about the difference between being a neighbor and acting like you own the neighborhood, the ways racial assumptions can influence how people react to strangers, and why conversations about historical racism can't simply be dismissed as "the past" when its effects continue to influence people's experiences today.

And, of course, this is Cold World—so we're not staying serious the entire time. 😂
