Homily for the Friday of the Thirteenth Week in Ordinary Time 

God chose you for a purpose just like He chose Peter, Paul (Saul), and Matthew. His choice alone, His plan, His purpose. It may not seem to make sense at the time, but God does not judge as you do. He does not look at the outward appearance, but at the heart and He is never wrong.

Today, ask yourself... do you trust God in His choice? God doesn’t call the qualified, He qualifies the called. It is the One who called that is important not the one who is called. Understanding and remembering this is the key to our every step in faith.

Homily for the Thursday of the Eleventh Week in Ordinary Time

Prayer is how we draw closer to God. Whether we pray to praise God, lament our suffering, or ask for our needs, prayer draws us into a union with our Triune God that is the foundation of our being.

Like Elijah, we can do nothing without God. And like Elijah, our words and actions ought to reflect God’s desires and his glory. So may our own habits of prayer help us to grow in this area, and to rely ever more on God who loves us.

Whether it’s from one generation to the next, from one president to the next, or from one pastor to the next, the transfer of leadership can produce tension and anxiety in any community. This was certainly the case with Elijah and Elisha and their prophetic community in today's reading in 2 Kings 2:1, 6-14. Today’s portion marks the conclusion of Elijah’s career, the point at which he must concede his power and position to his younger apprentice, Elisha.

The real and inescapable problems of life in this fallen world should lead us to prayer. Prayer should lead us to remembering and meditating on the promises of God, both those fulfilled in the past and those that we trust will be fulfilled in the future. Remembering the promises of God will help us to praise Him as we should. As we praise Him, we can continue to face with grace, the problems that come daily into our lives.

Love requires someone to give and someone to receive. In a society that is so confused about how to find real happiness, an examination of the Trinity can reveal the love everyone is looking for. The Trinity is a communion of persons, a family whose life is love.
