The spirit is willing but the flesh is weak. How many times have you heard that before? Oftentimes we have conflicts within ourselves and we're involved in the flesh. However, we must learn not to be debtors to the flesh and not give in to it because we are called to live according to the spirit.

In the bible, blind Bartimaeus spent his days begging from the world to meet his needs, but it wasn’t until he encountered Jesus that his biggest needs were met. Oftentimes we beg for hope and validation and look for answers in all the wrong places or from other people. We find that these places and people can’t fix us because that was never their purpose. The story of Blind Bartimaeus reminds us that Jesus truly is the answer to our needs. He is the only one that can save us from our circumstances, from our choices, and set us on a new path.

Homily for the 29th Friday of Ordinary Time.

Whether it was his influence in the battle against Communism, his visits to over 100 countries, his prolific writings in the form of books, encyclicals, and letters (including the first Letter to Women), his devotion to the youth, or his forgiveness and compassion toward the man who shot him—John Paul II exhibited what it meant to trust in God and to not be afraid.

Oftentimes in our lives, we have to realize that Jesus is the ultimate fulfillment, and there is nothing more important to us than that relationship and eternal life in serving him. Are you willing to give up everything and follow him? Do you see that Jesus is the ultimate for you? Are you up for it?

Homily for the 29th Wednesday of Ordinary Time.

Oftentimes God calls us through other people. Maybe there was one person whose life with Jesus made you curious about who he was. Their own passion for him made you want to see for yourself. Philip found Nathanael and shared what he had discovered, and Nathanael, too, went to meet Jesus. What these stories teach us is to listen carefully to those who have a firm relationship with Jesus, because they may be able to lead us to a deeper relationship of our own.

Homily for the 29th Tuesday in Ordinary Time. Oftentimes in our lives, prayer can be tough. We may face many obstacles that make it difficult for us to pray through what we are going through, but prayer is an entrance into a battlefield and through prayer, we can overcome those obstacles. We must "gird our loins" and not let our fire be snuffed out by the enemy. Be like servants that are waiting for the master to return and do not let the enemy blow out the power of God within you.

St. Luke, also known as St. Luke the Evangelist, born around the first century was not one of the 12 apostles but was one of the four evangelists. He spent time with the Apostles and the Blessed Mother to find out more about Jesus. He wrote the Gospel of Luke as well as the Acts of the Apostles and is mentioned in the letters of Paul as the latter’s “coworker” and as the “beloved physician.” St. Luke is said to have preached elsewhere throughout the Mediterranean, and possibly died as a martyr. Fittingly, the evangelist whose travels could have filled volumes, wrote just enough to proclaim the gospel and apostolic preaching to the world.

Homily for the 29th Sunday of Ordinary Time - 10:30 AM

Brothers James and John approached Jesus and said, "Grant us to sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your glory." Jesus' reply indicates that this would involve sharing in his suffering and baptism. "Are you willing to drink of the chalice of the suffering of which I am going to drink?" 

Oftentimes in our lives, we want to experience all the glory without any pain. Are we willing to pick up our cross daily and walk with God? In order to be "great" in the kingdom of God, we must learn to be the "least" here on earth, serving all others and putting them ahead of one's own needs and desires.

It is through being stretched, challenged, or cleaned that we are more able to receive what we need to grow. Often, the Lord pushes us into discomfort to help us receive the grace and be open to the changes we need to make in our lives.
