    Light-hearted humor Captain Billy's Whiz Bang, Vol. 3, No. 28, December, 1921
    by W. H. Fawcett.

hello everybody welcome to royal clarence now i thought today i should probably pop up some comedy but you know it's really hard finding comedy from the archives you know i'm using the archives as my source material for the comedy channel it's archive comedy i'm looking for and the reason for that is i i'm kind of drawn to it a purer sort of time and a time of innocence and i wanted to contrast with the very hardcore sort of um gunho uh over sexualized over violent over nasty comedy that seems to be everywhere at today in today's um sort of media you know the it seems to be you have to be nasty to somebody to be comic so i was looking at things that were less nasty but of course it turns out that they were quite nasty even in victorian times and they were you know they were more sexist more racist etc all these things and but i'm hoping you'll have a bit of fun with this this is um captain billy's whiz-bang i just thought it was such a great title volume three number 28 december 1921. now look they're going to repeat all that when they um read it my cat is here um cleaning itself if you can hear something weird um so anyway uh i think you'll enjoy it give it some time i think sometimes a bit dry isn't it it's interesting when you read a loud a comedy magazine without pictures some of it's a bit dry it's a little bit lost but give it some time and look if you are struggling to get to sleep you can at least use it for your insomnia i think that's probably quite a good call actually so i'll just play it through and um yeah see what you think and i'll be uploading quite a lot of comedy today i think friday should be comedy day we're getting close to the end of the week hopefully for most of us anyway so do enjoy this and let me know what you think in the comments why not section 1 of captain billy's whiz bang volume 3 number 28 december 1921. this is a librivox recording all librivox recordings are in the public domain for more information or to volunteer please visit librivox.org recording by larry wilson captain billy swiss bank volume 3 number 28 december 1921 by w.h fawcett one million five hundred thousand readers subject great northern railway company m j wolf saint paul minnesota september 29 1922 editor whiz bang robbinsdale minnesota dear sir on september 27th our train number 12 was held at robbinsdale 37 minutes loading what is stated to have been 36 000 pounds of mail in order that provision be made to handle such large quantities of mail without causing unreasonable delay to trains would you kindly furnish the following information first frequency of publication of the magazine second days or dates when regularly due to be placed in the mail third approximate weight or number of copies of each issue with this information we will consider the making of some special arrangement for bringing to the cities it might be advantageous to set a baggage car out at robinsdale the day before the magazine do to be forwarded yours truly mj wolff the letter tells the story if our winter annuals had been loaded at one time captain billy would have filled an entire mail train hereafter gentle reader your news dealer will have the whiz-bang on the 15th of the month and because of our enormous orders we will in future mail a few truckloads every day throughout the full month all magazines to be held at various post offices until the 15th for delivery in conclusion i thank you for your indulgence at delays in getting your whiz bang and your winter annual the old whiz bang farm has been a busy spot these past few months yours for fun captain billy we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is loyalty to the american people theodore roosevelt captain billy's whiz bang employs no solicitors subscriptions may be received only at authorized newsstands or by direct mail to robbinsdale we join in no clubbing offers nor do we...

  • Diary of a Nobody 2 Victorian Comedy Series Punch Magazine Free Audiobooks at Tale Teller Comedy Club
Gentle comedy writing read out loud will make your day so I am pleased to feature these on my new show.
the diary of a nobody by george and whedon grossmith read for librivox.org by martin clifton chapter two tradesman and the scraper still troublesome going rather tiresome with his complaints of the paint i make one of the best jokes of my life delights of gardening mr stillbrook gowing cummings and i have a little misunderstanding sarah makes me look a fool before cummings

april the 9th commence the morning badly the butcher whom we decided not to arrange with called and blaggered me in the most uncalled for manner he began by abusing me and saying he did not want my custom i simply said then what are you making all this fuss about it for and he shouted at the top of his voice so that all the neighbors could hear pah go along i could buy up things like you by the dozen i shut the door and was giving carrie to understand that this disgraceful scene was entirely her fault when there was a violent kicking at the door enough to break the panels it was the blaggard butcher again who said he had cut his foot over the scraper and would immediately bring an action against me called at farmersons the ironmonger on my way to town and gave him the job of moving the scraper and repairing the bells thinking it's scarcely worthwhile to trouble the landlord with such a trifling matter arrived home tired and worried mr putley a painter and decorator who had sent in a card said he could not match the colour on the stairs as it contained indian carmine he said he spent half a day calling at warehouses to see if he could get it he suggested he should entirely repaint the stairs it would cost very little more if he tried to match it he could only make a bad job of it it would be more satisfactory to him and to us to have the work done properly i consented but felt i had been talked over planted some mustard and cress and radishes and went to bed at nine april the 10th farmerson came round to attend the scraper himself he seems a very civil fellow he says he does not usually conduct such small jobs personally but for me he would do so i thanked him and went to town it is disgraceful how late some of the young clerks are at arriving i told three of them that if mr perkup the principal heard of it they might be discharged pierce a monkey of 17 who has only been with us six weeks told me to keep my hair on i informed him that i had had the honour of being in the firm 20 years to which he instantly replied that i looked it i gave him an indignant look and said i demand from you some respect sir he replied all right go on demanding i would not argue with him any further you cannot argue with people like that in the evening gowing called and repeated his complaint about the smell of paint gowing is sometimes very tedious with his remarks and not always cautious and carrie once very properly reminded him that she was present

april the 11th mustard and cress and radishes not come up yet today was a day of annoyances i missed the quarter to nine bus to the city through having words with the grosses boy who for the second time had the impertinence to bring his basket to the hall door and had left the marks of his dirty boots on the fresh cleaned doorsteps he said he had knocked the side door with his knuckles for a quarter of an hour i knew sarah our servant could not hear this as she was upstairs doing the bedrooms so ask the boy why he did not ring the bell he replied that he did pull the bell but the handle came off in his hand i was half an hour late at the office a thing that has never happened to me before there has recently been much irregularity in the attendance of the clerks and mr perkup our principal unfortunately chose this very morning to pounce down upon us early someone had given the tip to the others the result was that i was the only one late of the lot buckling one of the senior clerks was a brick and i...

to be are not to be this is a librivox recording all librivox recordings are in the public domain for more information or to volunteer visit librivox.org

to be are not to be by kurt vonnegut jr narrated by dennis sayers the hospital orderly played by mark smith painter read by alan drake leora duncan read by laurie ann walden dr hitz read by michael yard the voice of whaling read by julian jameson federal bureau of termination hostess read by kara shallenberg

everything was perfectly there were no prisons no slums no insane asylums no cripples no poverty no wars all diseases were conquered so was old age death barring accidents was an adventure for volunteers the population of the united states was stabilized at 40 million souls one bright morning in the chicago line in hospital a man named edward k welling jr waited for his wife to give birth he was the only man waiting not many people were born a day anymore welling was 56 a mere stripling in a population whose average age was 129. x-rays had revealed that his wife was going to have triplets the children would be his first young welling was hunched in his chair his head in his hand he was so rumpled so still and colorless as to be virtually invisible his camouflage was perfect since the waiting room had a disorderly and demoralized air too chairs and ashtrays had been moved away from the walls the floor was paved with spattered drop cloths the room was being redecorated it was being redecorated as a memorial to a man who had volunteered to die a sardonic old man about 200 years old sat on a step ladder painting a mural he did not like back in the days when people aged visibly his age would have been guessed at 35 or so aging had touched him that much before the cure for aging was found the mural he was working on depicted a very neat garden men and women in white doctors and nurses turned the soil planted seedlings sprayed bugs spread fertilizer men and women in purple uniforms pulled up weeds cut down plants that were old and sickly raked leaves carried refuse to trash burners never never never not even in medieval holland nor old japan had a garden been more formal been better tended every plant had all the loam light water air and nourishment it could use a hospital orderly came down the corridor singing under his breath a popular song if you don't like my kisses honey here's what i will do i'll go see a girl in purple kiss this sad world to lou if you don't want my loving why should i take up all this space i'll get off this old planet let some sweet baby have my place the orderly looked in at the mural and the muralist looks so real he said i can practically imagine i'm standing in the middle of it what makes you think you're not in it said the painter he gave a satiric smile it's called the happy garden of life you know that's good of dr hitz said the orderly he was referring to one of the male figures in white whose head was a portrait of dr benjamin hitz the hospital's chief obstetrician hitz was a blindingly handsome man lots of faces still to fill in said the orderly he meant that many of the faces in the mural were still blank all blanks were to be filled with portraits of important people on either the hospital staff or from the chicago office of the federal bureau of termination must be nice to be able to make pictures that look like something said the orderly the painter's face curdled with scorn you think i'm proud of this dab he said you think this is my idea of what life really looks like what's your idea of what life looks like said the orderly the painter gestured at a foul drop cloth there's a good picture of it he said frame that and you'll have a picture a damn side more honest than this one you're a gloomy old duck aren't you said the orderly is that a crime said the painter the orderly shrugged if you don't like it here...
