  • TV & Movie Reviews: Green Lantern (2011)

This week we review the 2011 Warner Bros. / DC title, Green Lantern. Starring Ryan Reynolds, Blake Lively, Mark Strong and Tim Robbins. Critics don't look favourably on this one but we try to find if there's anything redeemable about the movie everyone wants to forget.

    Plot Summary:

In a mysterious universe, the Green Lantern Corps, an elite defence force of peace and justice have existed for centuries. Reckless test pilot Hal Jordan acquires superhuman powers when he is chosen by the Ring, the willpower-fed source of power. Reluctantly at first, he takes on the challenge after the death of Abin Sur, the finest Green Lantern. Putting his self-doubts aside, and spurred on by his sense of duty and love for his beautiful, intellectually equal, colleague, Carol Ferris, he is soon called to defend mankind from Parallax, a powerful, evil being who feeds on fear. Hal Jordan is the universe's last chance, as many Green Lanterns have been killed and the Corps is weakened, and he might just be the right Green Lantern for the duty of keeping the world safe from harm.

  • Indie Comics Spotlight: Preacher
On this episode of Indie Comics Spotlight, Tony welcomes Brad Filicky of DC Comics News and the DC comics news podcast network. Tony and Brad spend time in Texas and New York as they break down the unholy trinity of Vertigo Comics' classic Preacher.
Creator-owned series from writer Garth Ennis and artist Steve Dillon (with all covers provided by Glenn Fabry).
The series, based off an idea Ennis had while working on Hellblazer, tells the story of Jesse Custer, a down and out cursed/blessed southern boy preacher, a hard livin' Irish vampire (Cassidy) and the preacher's gun slinging ex-girlfriend (Tulip O'Hare) travel and fight the world to question The All Mighty Himself, as to why he quit his sacred task of caring for the world?
Along the way a colorful cast of supporting characters walk into the story including a Cowboy who can kill anything (Saint of Killers), a once suicidal depressed teen who just happens to have a face like an arse (Arseface), and a zealot assassin by the name of Herr Starr.

This week Mike talks about the 6 issue crossover event between the main run of Star Wars Comics and the Darth Vader comics named “Vader Down”, where Vader is shot down over Vrogas Vas searching for Luke Skywalker, inadvertently discovering a rebel refuelling base and has to fight his way through hundreds of rebels with only the help of the rogue archaeologist Doctor Aphra, her homicidal droid companions and the power of the dark side!

The 3 Darth Vader comics are written by Kieron Gillen, the artist is Salvador Larroca and the colourist is Edgar Delgado. Vader Down #1 was released November 2015, Darth Vader #15 was released January 2016. The trade paperback collection was released April 2016 and the hardcover was released in February 2017.
