Episode 56 - Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - Black, White and Green All Over

It is great to have Dan back this week!  He's refreshed, and ready to talk comics.  Better yet, Dan came back home this week and got to read some classics from his teenage years – the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles books from Mirage Studios that kickstarted the crazy black & white indy comics scene of the mid ‘80s. Now Duane gets to read them for the very first time.

  • Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #1-7
  • Radioactive Black Belt Hamsters #1
  • Creator Spotlight: Eastman & Laird

2 Minute Recap and Discussion Topics

    Ronin #1

    • Printed in a “prestige” format.  More pages, better paper, higher price.
  • Frank Miller unchained and unmanaged.
  • Heavy influence from Japanese films and comics
  • Very stylized and action heavy
  • Extremely pessimistic look at the future.  Also a truly crazy, convoluted story.
  • We read just the first installment of a 6 issue mini-series.
  • Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #1-7

    • Mirage Studios: "there wasn't an actual studio, only kitchen tables and couches with lap boards."
  • Truly collaborative Story and Art – even they can’t tell exactly who did what
  • Duoshade - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GftgBL-sHnI
  • Went through multiple printings, with significant value differences
  • These are essentially shadow Marvel comics – Matt Murdock and Baxter Building cameos!
  • April O’Neil.  https://blackgirlnerds.com/tmnt-and-the-secret-history-of-april-oneils-inspiration/
  • Baxter Stockman is a play on Baxter stock – a type of comic paper
  • The ending seems a bit sudden.  Like they just ran out of pages and called it a day
  • This is the last of the 2-color cover issues
  • Did you see aliens coming?  I did not.
  • Cantina scene
  • Fugitoid had his own one-shot comic earlier
  • There are definite plot holes here.  Best not to examine these stories too closely
  • Radioactive Black Belt Hamsters #1

    • TNMT immediately inspired imitators: https://dandreifort.com/2020/07/24/tmnt-comic-knockoffs/
  • None of the words make any sense, and the art does not help to make it better.
  • Bruce, Chuck, Jackie … and Clint.  Clint?
  • Last page is the writer and artist talking about how they didn't have enough story for the comic. Which must be a first.
  • Yet found a market as it sold over 500,000 copies.
  • Resulting eventually in the “Black and White Boom” (and bust): https://www.vulture.com/2016/06/turtles-speculation-bubble.html

Episode 54 - Logan Movie Review

There's been a great deal of talk on social media over the last few weeks about WHO has been spotted on the set of the Deadpool film which is currently in principal photography. Someone we've known for some time that would be joining the merc with a mouth in his 3rd go-around was revealed months ago in a video with Ryan Reynolds - and that's Hugh Jackman. For Jackman, he's reprising the role of the adamantium claw wielding Wolverine from the X-Men. So this week, Guest host Luke and I are going to spend some time looking back at what we thought was Jackman's last performance as the Wolverine - the 2017 film Logan.

    Ultimate Fallout #4

    • Not really much to this story – it was the second story in the book.
  • Much needed context to whom this is and how he got spider powers – comes during Ultimate Comics Spider-Man.
  • Everyone seems to assume it’s the same Spider-Man as before – despite new reports the original Spider-Man has died.
  • The Kangaroo and onlookers keep saying the costume is in poor taste.
  • Ultimate Comics Spider-Man #1-12

    • Start of the book deals not only with Miles, but with the fallout from Peter’s death to his friends and family
  • Gwen gives him his calling – with great power comes great responsibility
  • Book title changed between #3 and #4.  Odd, but not unprecedented.

2 Minute Recap and Discussion Topics

THE CLASSICS - Fantastic Four #2, Avengers #89-97

    • Skrulls seem bumbling early, but not later
  • Kree are also awful.  Thomas saw the war as an allegory of what happened to small islands fought over by Japan and the US in WWII.
  • Not nearly as one-sided as it is shown in the movies, where the Kree are extremely powerful and the Skrulls are a defeated refugee population
  • Story kicked off the Vision/Scarlet Witch romance, opened up a lot of the Marvel “cosmic” universe, and has been a key building block for Marvel.
  • Art is fantastic, with the Neal Adams (#93-96) being among some of my favorite comics ever.
  • Secret Invasion #1-8 (2008)

** You can use code SECRETMU at Marvel.com/redeem to get the first 2 books of this series within Marvel Unlimited. Offer expires 9/1/2023 before 11:59 pm ET.

    • There are so many characters, and so many storylines that are picked up and dropped
  • First 7 books told a logical story without noticeable interruptions. Book 8 was “after the fact” with narration. What happened between books 7 and 8 and where did it happen? Did we missing anything important?
  •  I didn’t know who some of the characters used were/are?
  • Unanswered Questions
  • Modern Appearances - Meet the Skrulls #1-5 (2019), Secret Invasion #1-5 (2022)

    • Meet the Skrulls is very much like “The Americans” TV show.  Or Invincible maybe.  A classic cold-war spy story just moved to interplanetary scale.
  • Main protagonist is Alice Walker, the middle child.
  • Rumors are that Emilia Clark’s “G’iah” is based on the mom Gloria / G’iah
  • 2nd Secret Invasion is really a Maria Hill story.  Fury spends a lot of it kidnapped, and Stark is nearly as much trouble as he is help.
  • Skrulls are more sympathetic, in that there are two sides.  Some are working with Stark, and not trying to invade.
  • Key Concepts for the TV Show

    • At there core, Skrull stories are nightmare fuel straight out of McCarthy.  They are about who can be trusted and who is “real” and they are based in a fear of outsiders.  Skrull stories are always in danger of being apologies for Great Replacement racial and ethnic conspiracy theories.
  • The two Secret Invasions take very different strategies for telling a similar story.  Which did you like, the sprawling action epic or the more personal spy thriller?
  • Final Thoughts

About Comics Over Time

From the publisher's feed

Each week Dan, Duane and Siena bring you a look at comics new and old! Since 2021 we have been discussing comics, TV and film. For 2024 Duane and Dan are focusing on Marvel history that centers on Daredevil, and Siena and Dan are keeping up with current happenings in the Marvel Comics Universe. Our previous seasons are also available here: Phases of the Moon Knight covered the Moon Knight character in comics and TV, and our MCU Review saw us comparing the Phase 1 thru Phase 4 Marvel Cinematic Universe films with the comics that inspired them.
