  • Michele Cushatt | Finding Peace When All You Feel Is Pressure

On a scale from 1 to 10, how much peace do you have in your life and career right now?

    (10 = total peace, 1 = minimal, if any)

I'm asking because I look at the conversations and headlines around social media these days and I'm seeing a LACK of peace.

Even in the conversations I'm having with people around me…pressure seems to be mounting…

    At home…

    In the career…

    With finances…

And all the news around a possible recession and the continued political division isn't helping.

So how do you find peace when all you feel is pressure?

I lean in to that question on today's episode of the Coming Up Clutch with J.R.™ show. I sit down with Michele Cushatt - 3-time head and neck cancer survivor, 4-time author, and one of the best communicators and leaders I know.

If there's anyone who knows a thing or two about navigating seasons where peace isn't present, it's Michele.

But here's what else Michele knows - how to stay relentless when the fire around you keeps getting worse.

Michele and I get real about the challenges of life that we all face.

In this latest episode, Michele and I talk about…

    • How to overcome insurmountable challenges (and God doesn't seem to be around to help)
    • What to do when you feel broken and don't know what to do
    • How to handle moments or seasons that lack peace

    …and so much more.

If you want more peace in your life and career, then lock in to today's episode.

[00:01 - 17:08] Introducing Michele to the show

    • Michele's most embarrassing moment
    • Michele's background, story and professional journey

[17:09 - 34:50] How to overcome challenges that feel insurmountable and God doesn't seem to be there to help

    • You can deal with anything as long as you know you're not alone (will unpack below)
    • Feeling alone is scarier than your challenges alone
    • Pain at any level is a very loud voice that captures our focus and attention and ends up sabotaging our perspective
    • How to bridge the gap between experiencing pain from your challenge and having faith that God will come through for you
      • We need two elements:
        • Presence - we need to know we're not alone
          • Must wrestle with reality that, "Do I believe God is real, good, and that I can trust Him?" (Deuteronomy 31:8 - never will I leave you, never will I forsake you)
          • Must have presence of others - can't do it alone, especially when we're beyond our own determination
        • Purpose - need to believe that our struggle will not be wasted ...that we'll be able to squeeze meaning and purpose out of it and leverage/repurpose it for something greater than the actual pain itself
          • Part of our growth "EDGE" (and competitive edge) and developing resilience is to learn and understand that this pain could produce results that couldn't be gained any other way (analogies: workouts - can't get results any other way but through pain)
          • Have to make a DECISION: Am I going to be defined and derailed by this challenge? Or developed by it?
    • The mistake people make in their relationships when going through the challenges of life…
      • They don't think they can show up because they feel there's something broken about us, so they hold back, refuse vulnerability, and stay superficial
      • We have to decide if we're going to show up with all of ourselves and our flaws, and take the risk to show up as our flawed self knowing that people connect more with imperfect people than perfect presentations.

[34:51 - 39:55] What to do when you feel broken and don't know what to do

    • First step: admit you need help. You can't do it alone and don't have all the answers. You take this step SPIRITUALLY and PRACTICALLY
      • Spiritually
        • Go to God - "God, I can't do this without your divine intervention and help."
        • This takes humility. Pride is a terrible companion.
      • Practically
        • Go to others - "I need help, and don't know where to begin." This includes Therapists/Counselors AND Accountability Partners (not YES people!)
    • Second step: Continue being a student - You have to own your own growth. It's no one else's fault or responsibility that you are where you are.

[39:56 - 46:45] What the best do when it comes to living and performing optimally

    • How to handle moments or seasons that lack peace
      • The secret to peace is finding eyes to see.
      • Peace requires:
        • A foundational pillar that's bigger and stronger than whatever sits on it - GOD
          • Problem: we try to be the anchor ourselves. A boat anchored to itself is not anchored at all.
          • We need an anchor stronger and bigger that's outside of us to be more secure and have more peace
        • INTERNAL SENSE OF GROUNDEDNESS (not an external ability control)
          • Identity also related here: Must know "Who are we?" "Who do we attach ourselves to as our foundation?"

    [46:46 - 51:06] Wrapping Up

    • Michele's BIG domino
    • How to connect with Michele

  • 5 Minute Drill | Leverage the Power of Story to Expand Your Possibilities

Did you know that personal stories and gossip make up 65% of our conversations?

Whether you like it or not, us humans think in narratives all day long - when we're buying things, when we're about to go into the office or get to the field, when we're spending time with friends or family or our spouse.

We also get sucked in by other's stories. They MOVE us - to action, to tears, to anger…

But, YOU have a story, too. Several of them, in fact…

You've overcome PLENTY in your life…

But how often are you tapping into YOUR stories to inspire you to action?

They're free…you don't have to pay a motivational speaker or buy an app to get access to this inspiration.

In today's 5-Minute Drill, I'm going to show you how to leverage the power of story to expand your possibilities. This is a strategy my clients LOVE, especially when we do alter ego work.

It's also been a powerful strategy for me. EXACTLY why I want to share it with you today.

If you want more inspiration and motivation in your life (for free!), then make sure to lock in to today's Drill.

    LET'S GET IT!

    [00:01 - 09:15] Opening Segment

    • The predominant story that J.R. was telling himself during the hardest season of his life

    [09:15 - 16:59] What's The Drill?

    • STEP 1: Pick a field of play you're on. I encourage you to pick the FOP that you're having the most resistance or stress on…where the negative stories you're listening to are in abundance.
    • STEP 2: Identify the negative, recurring story that you keep listening to that drives you nuts (because it's the one holding you back).
    • STEP 3: Come up with an Origin Story that pulls positivity from your past and identifies the possibilities of your future. The goal here is a story that inspires you.

    [17:00 - 18:29] Wrapping Up!

  • Justin Roethlingshoefer | Own Your Different

    "He's different."

How many times have you caught yourself saying that about someone?

For me, it's been plenty of times.

Curious, though - how many times have you said I'M DIFFERENT and then own it?

    Therein lies the opportunity.

For years, I was told I'm unique in God's eyes, but never truly dug deep into what that meant…

Told by coaches, peers, and colleagues that I'm special, but never took the time to find out why.

It took me over three decades to finally do that work…and, man, what a gamechanger it's been!

In today's episode of the Coming Up Clutch with J.R.™ show, I sit down with Justin Roethlingshoefer - a friend, top performance expert, and entrepreneur who's dedicated his life to helping people OWN their different.

One day Justin was living an NHL dream, the next day he was burned out, addicted to opioids, and divorced.

Everything changed when he DECIDED to own the true, DIFFERENT version of himself.

Justin and I get very real about his journey and how he's turned his life, relationships, and mission around.

In this latest episode, Justin and I talk about…

    • How to confidently step into the gap between where you are and where you want to be
    • The mindset shift that's necessary when you feel like you're struggling to be disciplined
    • What the best do when it comes to living and performing optimally

    …and so much more.

If you want to turn your uniqueness into your superpower, then lock in to today's episode.

[00:01 - 12:17] Introducing Justin to the show

    • Justin's most embarrassing moment
    • Justin's background and professional journey

[12:18 - 28:13] How to confidently step into the gap between where you are and where you want to be

    • Context: Justin's story - dream to work in NHL turned into a nightmare and led to an opioid addiction (there was constantly a values conflict)
    • We must understand the true definition of God: Embodying the Spirit of God internally in order for us to thrive (i.e. we must embody that Spirit)
      • 1) we are truly embodying God when we are connected to him through prayer and listening
      • 2) connect with somebody that is deeply connected to God…someone that makes you go, "They're different." Be willing to be open with that person and have an intentionality of where you're going and why you're doing it.

[28:14 - 30:40] The mindset shift that's necessary when you feel like you're struggling to be disciplined

    • While self-discipline is culturally celebrated and rewarded, it's incredibly inefficient and overrated.
    • Self-discipline only works on the assumption that we have to fight against ourselves in order to win. In actuality, if we embody God in order to thrive, we're saying that discipline has to fight with God in order to win - this makes NO sense.
      • This is why things become so hard
      • We need to surrender and, instead of working off of discipline and grinding through, and become deeply connected to what matters…that's when things become effortless (i.e. done with ease).

[30:41 - 37:39] What the best do when it comes to living and performing optimally

    • It's different for every person
    • Tree analogy, if we're a tree…
      • Us humans typically relate ourselves to the fruit we produce (e.g. cars, businesses, stats, families, homes, etc.). BUT - if you don't harvest the fruit at the right time, it rots and falls off.
      • We are not the fruit or the branches…we're not the TYPE of tree or the trunk…we're the ROOT system.
      • The root system was started by a seed - that seed is GOD.
      • The best - they focus on the ROOTS and how they're built. Things like how are we…
        • Sleeping?
        • Eating?
        • Living with our families?
        • Connecting with people?
        • Connecting with God?
      • Even in a FIRE, the root system stays strong, can rebuild, and become renewed
      • We have to take steps DAILY to make sure our root system is strong so WE stay strong when life and our careers hit us
    • What too many people are getting wrong when it comes to human performance
      • Too many people are putting performance on a pedestal vs. focusing on the process
      • The process is our ROOT system which exists in HEALTH, RELATIONSHIPS, and CONNECTIVITY - when we focus on those, performance happens as a consequence
      • There's no perfect routine - your routines come back to your root system and making sure it's optimized - THAT's OWNING YOUR DIFFERENT. And when that happens, our fruit is bigger and in more abundance, it's more regular, and more valuable.
      • Your different is your blessing. It's there for a reason.

    [37:40 - 43:20] Wrapping Up

    • Justin's BIG domino
    • How to connect with Justin

    KEY QUOTES

  • 5 Minute Drill | The Play Between Boundaries and Spaces

It's amazing how many boundaries we put up in our relationships, especially with our spouse.

    "This is my time…"

"This is my night with the guys…"

    Or how about this one?...

"I don't want to talk about it right now."

It took me almost 15 years of marriage to realize that for every boundary I set, I have to create an accompanying space for my wife.

Not an easy task by any means.

In today's 5-Minute Drill, I'm going to keep it real about one of the most overlooked topics when it comes to communication, especially in marriage and relationships.

If you want more peace, love, and joy in your relationship, then make sure to lock in to today's Drill.

    LET'S GET IT!

    [00:01 - 08:48] Opening Segment

    • J.R.'s backstory of creating boundaries and not enough space in his relationship

    [08:49 - 11:02] What's The Drill?

    Take inventory of your relationship…

    • STEP 1: What boundaries do you have in place?
    • STEP 2: What boundaries do you need to have, but you're not communicating?
    • STEP 3: Considering your boundaries, how could you add more space for your spouse (or fiance or significant other) to communicate his/her needs, wants, or whatever is on their mind?
    • STEP 4: Have a courageous conversation about your boundaries AND your reasons why you have them.
    • STEP 5: In that same conversation, communicate how you're going to intentionally create more space.

  • Andy Krajewski | Turn Adversity Into Your Advantage

    "Why me, God?"

    Ever ask yourself that question?

It's a fair question - especially if you're facing a serious health event or life-threatening injury.

But imagine having to go through SIX of them.

That's exactly what Andy Krajewski was faced with.

I thought I went through some heavy adversity at certain periods of my life…that was until I heard Andy's story.

In today's episode of the Coming Up Clutch with J.R.™ show, I sit down with Andy and have a real conversation about overcoming adversity.

This former pro golfer turned wealth advisor and entrepreneur will inspire you. Period.

In this latest episode, Andy and I talk about…

    • Andy's key lessons from overcoming six battles of extreme, life-altering adversity
    • What Andy learned from his clutch moment as an amateur golfer that inspired him to beat the odds and have sustained success in life and business
    • The two MUSTs when it comes to experiencing more wealth and less stress

    …and so much more.

If you want to be better prepared for when your adversity strikes, then don't miss today's episode.

[00:01 - 23:25] Introducing Andy to the show

    • Andy's most embarrassing moment
    • Andy's detail of his life-altering events
    • Andy's background and professional journey

[23:26 - 29:45] Andy's key lessons from overcoming six battles of extreme, life-altering adversity

    • You have to know who you are. You have to know your identity and know where you're going.
    • You have to have faith. You have to believe in greater things than yourself.
    • To keep the faith through extreme adversity, you have to search for the answers yourself - it's YOUR faith journey, not anyone else's.

[29:46 - 40:16] What Andy learned from his clutch moment that inspired him to beat the odds and have sustained success in life and business

    • Backstory: Big golf tournament, gives his competitor a gimmie at 6 feet for par (he had a 12 foot putt for birdie)
      • Andy's mindset shift ===> "I'm going to beat him. I'm not going to let him beat himself."
      • Kept doing it to other competitors
      • Went on the championship round against the best in the state
    • Bled into Andy's coaching of other athletes
      • 15U Kids
        • What do you want to accomplish? ⇒ Individual goals ⇒ Team Goal
        • The mindset he passed down to the kids…
          • We want to focus 100% on the task at hand…
          • GIve all your god-given talents…
          • Work as hard you can…
          • You're going to executive…
          • You're going to be in a mental state where you control what you can control…
          • And it's within that process that you'll have your victory
      • 17U Kids
        • Pitcher wasn't getting calls he thought he deserved. Andy helped the pitcher reframe to: "This umpire has chosen to make you a better pitcher" (The umpire is telling you that your good isn't good enough and asking you to be great. You should be thanking him for squeezing you).
        • Result: the culture of the team changed!
        • It's the little disciplines that will make the big things happen (i.e. in Andy's first practice, he made everyone fold their clothes).

[40:17 - 46:59] The two MUSTs when it comes to experiencing more wealth and less stress

    • Take a wholistic, process-based approach. Make decisions based on the interconnectedness of :
      • Logic
      • Emotion
      • Spirituality / values system
      • Physical health
    • Don't buy into the media's sensationalizing of the market
      • If you buy into the process, you can eliminate the noise.
      • If you don't buy into the noise, you reduce your stress. When you reduce stress, science says you live longer. If you live longer, your portfolio will grow because in every market top, money pours in and in every market bottom, money gets pulled. The wholistic, process-based approach helps you keep your money in the game so you don't hurt in the long term and give your portfolio the best chance to grow.

[47:00 - 51:19] What Andy suggests couples do when there's a disconnect around money

    • Have to separate emotion from logic

  • Kevin Young | It's Not What You Know. It's What You Show.

Knowing what to do is one thing. Actually doing it is another.

It's the difference between who stays in the middle average and who ascends to the top.

Kevin Young knows all about that as someone who competed at the top of Major League Baseball for over 12 years.

He played for Hall of Fame coaches and with Hall of Fame players, while breaking records himself. Now he plays the role of Executive Athlete, serving as Special Assistant to the General Manager of the Pittsburgh Pirates.

In today's episode of the Coming Up Clutch with J.R.™ show, I sit down with Kevin and unpack what led to his clutch moments and record-breaking seasons, as well dig into what Kevin believes is the biggest threat to coming up clutch more often.

In this latest episode, Kevin and I talk about…

    • Three attributes of a Hall of Fame leader
    • The 7 key lessons from Kevin's ultimate clutch moment
    • The difference between average and top performers

    …and so much more.

If you want to be the person who consistently shows up and shows out, then lock in to today's episode.

[00:01 - 08:29] Introducing Kevin to the show

    • Kevin's most embarrassing moment
    • Kevin's background and professional journey

[08:30 - 13:09] Three attributes of a Hall of Fame leader

    • Commands respect
    • Always in close connection with his people
    • Makes communicating with people a priority - it's not what you know, it's what you show

    [13:10 - 32:22] The 7 key lessons from Kevin's ultimate clutch moment

    • Kevin's Clutch Moment ('97): had to have thumb surgery and was told he'd have to be out 8-10 weeks. He decided he was ready after 5 weeks, but didn't tell anyone he was still hitting to prepare. In the sixth week of his rehab, he gets put in a game as a defensive replacement. He was left in the game to hit first in the Bottom of the 9th and hits a home run to win the game.
    • Key lessons from that moment:
      • I always wanted to be there for my teammates
      • Always be prepared
      • Was willing to do whatever it took
      • Don't allow people to tell you what you can't do if you're passionate about doing it
      • Get rid of the negative around around you
      • I never settled for being good in one area of my game - must have a growth mindset in every area of your life / game
      • Key question to ask: What does Hall of Fame look like for you?

[32:23 - 36:06] What Kevin believes is the biggest threat to coming up clutch more often

    • Being too judgemental. It makes you lose perspective
    • Give people opportunities just like you've been given opportunities
    • Power comes with humility and confidence

[36:07 - 40:34] The difference between average and top performers

    • The drive to be the BEST version of yourself EVERY day
    • The game never speeds up on them
    • How they respond to challenges
    • Mental toughness
    • Know how to use discernment properly
    • They have perspective

    [40:35 - 44:57] Wrapping Up

    • Kevin's BIG domino
    • How to connect with Kevin

    KEY QUOTES
