  • Wednesday Recap | Tara Collingwood

I meet a LOT of people who want mindset hacks. When I ask them how they're leveraging their body to impact their brain, I typically get the blank stares, followed by the deep thoughts look.

Too many people are focused on TOP DOWN strategies to overcome obstacles. It's the same people wondering why their confidence changes more often than they change their underwear (assuming they change their underwear daily)

    But, seriously…

There's an opportunity to leverage a BOTTOM UP approach to accelerate your mental and emotional fitness…

It starts with how you fuel your body.

In today's episode of Coming Up Clutch™️, I summarize the Top 3 nuggets from Monday's interview with nationally recognized nutrition expert and author, Tara Collingwood.

If you want practical steps to fuel your body in a way that will lead to a consistent, high-performing life, lock in to get the cliffs notes version of my interview with Tara.

    • #1: How to leverage your diet to overcome adversity
    • #2: How to stay on top of what our body needs
    • #3: Why we must pay attention to our gut for optimal health and performance

  • Tara Collingwood | An Optimal Mind Starts with Your Body

Quiz time: On a scale from 1 to 10, how intentional are you about planning your meals around how you want to feel?

Notice I didn't ask, "What do you eat when you feel ________?"

The reality is, eating has become a reactionary thing for driven people on a mission. Our meals typically follow our mood.

"I'm hungry. Shoot, I better eat something."

"I feel like crap and don't feel like cooking." (cue smashing the Uber Eats app).

    How do I know this?

    Because I'm like you.

For years, eating was an event that followed my mood. There was no intention behind it, despite me knowing as a former athlete our bodies are like luxury cars…

…if we keep putting 87 gas in while pushing it to the max, it's bound to break down - both mentally and physically.

In today's episode of the Coming Up Clutch with J.R.™ show, nationally recognized nutrition expert and author, Tara Collingwood, keeps it both REAL and SIMPLE as she shares how us high-achievers can fuel the feelings (and ultimately the outcomes) we're after.

In this latest episode, Tara and I talk about…

    • How to leverage your diet to overcome adversity
    • How to stay on top of what your body needs despite it constantly changing
    • Why we must pay attention to our gut for optimal health and performance

    …and so much more.

If you want to prime your body and mind to achieve your biggest dreams and goals, then lock in to today's episode.

[00:01 - 14:20] Introducing Tara to the show

    • Tara's most embarrassing moment
    • Tara's background and her professional journey

[14:21 - 29:08] How to leverage your diet to overcome adversity

    • Must ask yourself everyday, "What's most important?"
    • Make a choice on how you want to move forward in life.
    • Our physical health is our foundation - if you don't have a strong foundation in your house, the rest will crumble
    • Two key words when it comes to nutrition / leveraging your diet to help you overcome adversity (2Ps): Planning & Preparation
      • Recommendation: try one new recipe a week or month (to prevent boredom). If you have a family, pick something to try together.
      • Tara's advice when you feel like you just can't Plan and Prep because you're so mentally/emotionally challenged right now…
        • BE TRUE TO YOURSELF - what is realistic for me and MY lifestyle?
        • Connect FOOD to how you FEEL. When you have to perform at your best and want to SHOW UP the best for the people who matter most, you HAVE to think about what's going in your body
      • Give yourself grace - YOU DON'T HAVE TO BE PERFECT
    • Key TIP: Ask yourself, how do I want to FEEL physically, mentally, and emotionally for the next 3-4 hours. Your answer determines what you should put in your body.
      • How are you going to FUEL how you want to FEEL in your body?
      • NOTE: take in smaller increments vs. thinking like you have to have this perfect diet all figured out

[29:09 - 38:20] How to stay on top of what our body needs

    • Regarding supplements and fad diets…
      • If it sounds too good to be true, it is. There's no one size fits all - everyone's body is different
    • Regarding intermittent fasting…
      • Tara's philosophy = 12 hours of fasting is optimal. We have about a 1 hour window upon waking up where our metabolism is ready to get going. If we pass that window, we're losing out on necessary energy
      • Supply and Demand analogy: Supply = food; Demand = think, breathe, move; the minute you wake up, metabolism is go-go-go and you need to FUEL that (because while you're sleeping, you're using that energy that was stored)

[38:21 - 42:21] Why we must pay attention to our gut for optimal health and performance

    • Our gut is where our immunity is
    • Tara's recommendation (but, still, check with your doctor):
      • Probiotic supplements
      • Probiotic foods (kiefer, yogurt, fermented foods like sauerkraut and kimchi)
      • Foods high in fiber - whole grains, fruits and vegetables, beans
      • These keep the good bacteria happy (whereas processed foods pisses them off)
    • Stress - the mind and gut are closely intertwined
      • Stress releases hormones…those hormones tell us whether we're hungry or full (when we don't get enough sleep, hunger hormones can also get triggered)
      • This is why you see people gain or lose weight whenever they're going through a tough time or a challenge

[42:32 - 45:44] How to manage your diet in the midst of family craziness, travel, and an overall packed schedule

    • Plan and Prepare! Think about your schedule AHEAD OF TIME
    • If you're eating out, you CHOOSE the healthier options

    [45:45 - 50:16] Wrapping Up

    • Tara's BIG domino

  • 5 Minute Drill | You Can Strengthen Your Relationships While Pursuing Success

There exists this paradigm that says you "can't have your cake and eat it, too" when it comes to success and relationships…

That it's either one or the other.

    How stupid.

    You can have both…

But like anything worthwhile in life, it's going to take work.

    Hard work…

    And a ton of intention.

    But, you can have both.

Don't let anyone tell you differently.

In today's 5-Minute Drill, I share a strategy to help you keep your family, friends, and marriage strong while on your pursuit of success. This is one of those lessons I WISH I would've learned earlier in my career.

If you want to strengthen your relationships AND reach higher and higher levels of success, then lock in to today's Drill.

    LET'S GET IT!

    [00:01 - 04:00] Opening Segment

    • J.R. shares his reaction to Monday's Guest, Aaron Walker, and the boundaries he set around his family and marriage

    [04:01 - 07:16] What's The Drill?

    • If married or engaged or in a serious relationship. Ask these question:
      • Where are you exposed/unprotected in your relationship?
      • What guardrail are you going to put in place?
      • Who's holding you accountable to it?

    • If not in a serious relationship (or are already in a serious relationship or married and already have guardrails around that), what guardrails do you need to put in place for another area of your life? Ask these questions:
      • Where are you exposed/unprotected (e.g. mind? Body? soul?)?
      • What guardrail are you going to put in place?
      • Who's holding you accountable to it?

    [07:17 - 09:10] Wrapping Up!

  • Wednesday Recap | Aaron Walker

How do you handle being wrong?

How do you handle screwing up something?

It's really tough to show your cards, isn't it?

You know the easier route is to just keep it to yourself…

Until it becomes the harder, more hand-cuffing route.

Culture wants to tell us that vulnerability and transparency are a sign of weakness.

    In reality, they're a sign of strength…

They show that you want to get past whatever has slowed you down…

They show that you want to GET BETTER.

Don't believe the lie that you're weak if you're transparent about your weakness.

  • Aaron Walker | Isolation Is the Enemy Of Excellence

How tough is it for you to show others you're failing in something?...

Especially when the people around you think you have it all together?

I went through a tough stretch where, for almost four years, I was failing in so many areas of my life, but to everyone on the outside, I was living the best life.

    So, what did I do?

    I went into hiding.

If someone asked me the classic, "How you doing?" I'd respond with the fake, "Doing great."

As each day went by, I dug myself deeper into the hole of isolation.

And, man, was that a dark place.

In today's episode of the Coming Up Clutch with J.R.™ show, entrepreneur, author, and founder of the Iron Sharpens Iron Mastermind, Aaron Walker, gets real about isolation and what we can do to make sure we never let this excellence-killer lurk in our lives.

In this latest episode, Aaron and I talk about…

    • How to handle being blindsided in life
    • Why masterminds and peer groups are imperative for your success
    • How to keep family in your front seat while you're in a demanding career

    …and so much more.

If you want to stay on the road of life and career excellence, then lock in to today's episode.

[00:01 - 08:42] Introducing John to the show

    • Aaron's most embarrassing moment
    • Aaron's background and his professional journey

[08:43 - 25:47] How to handle being blindsided in life

    • Isolation is the enemy of excellence
    • We're designed to be in community. We weren't designed to be in isolation.
    • Strength begins at the intersection of vulnerability and transparency - that's where you get people to truly to walk with you
      • They help you get awareness of your blindspots
      • The value of being in community comes from the perspective of other people that care about you
      • Go find 1 or 2 people, bring the GOOD, BAD, UGLY, and ask them to help you pick up the pieces
      • It takes a lot of work to maximize our life, that includes non-biased, trusted advisors calling you out on your BS
      • Find people who love you enough to tell you the truth - "we need people that love us enough to say the hard things"

[25:48 - 35:48] Why masterminds and peer groups are imperative for your success

    • The success of some of the biggest influencers are because they committed themselves to going week-in-and-week-out subjecting themselves to the scrutiny of other people
    • You don't know what you don't know
    • WE ALL NEED A TEAM
      • We're only seeing things one way, through OUR lens. Need others to expand our view.
      • If things are GREAT now, they're not always going to be that way
      • "We need people around us all the time that 'we can aspire to be like and then we need to look back and be the mentor for the people coming behind us"
      • You can go fast alone, but you can't can't go near as far without a tribe

[35:49 - 42:42] How did you make sure family & marriage didn't go by the wayside while you're in a high stakes career

    • Put guardrails around me / boundaries
      • NO pictures with women while on the road
      • Have accountability partners - meet every Monday AM with my group and they know everything about me
      • When children wife/call me - I always make myself available
    • Money is important. Don't make it your God.
      • Can't be the only reason why you're doing what you're doing.
    • Parents: You don't get a DO-OVER.
      • Prioritize your priorities and really focus on the things that matter and make the income that you need to live a good life. Don't get those two reversed.

    [42:43 - 46:05] Kids and disappointment

    • God put us in control of our kids for a reason
      • We have to work really hard to say YES always, but sometimes we have to say NO. No is a complete sentence.
    • BEST ADVICE: You have to be consistent. If you're not consistent, you're wasting your time (you confuse your kids otherwise)
    • Must read book: Stolen Focus by Johann Hari
    • It's OK for our kids to be disappointed - as a result, they build grit, determination, and perseverance
    • Can't always come to their rescue

  • John Putnam | The Hidden Influencers of Your Money

What's influencing your decisions around money?

Here's an even better question - when's the last time you asked yourself the question I just asked?

When I first dug deep into what and who were influencing my financial decisions, it was eye-opening.

For decades, I was influenced by all the wrong things and people and continually found myself caught in the trap of keeping up with a lifestyle that I wasn't ready to live.

And the more I talk about this topic with others, I'm learning I wasn't the only one who got caught.

There's one influencer that stood out among the rest, though…

It's the one that sneaks up on you in ways you didn't think would.

In today's episode of the Coming Up Clutch with J.R.™ show, financial expert and author, John Putnam, unpacks this hidden influencer and helps us get out in front of it (link in bio).

In this latest episode, John and I talk about the…

    • Reality behind the belief, "My life will get easier once I have more money."
    • Hidden influencers of your money
    • Key "plan" that MUST come before a financial plan

    …and so much more.

If you want your financial decisions to continually come from a position of strength and confidence, then lock in to today's episode.

[00:01 - 14:44] Introducing John to the show

    • John's most embarrassing moment
    • John's background and his professional journey

[14:45 - 16:55] The reality behind the belief, "My life will get easier once I have more money."

    • In some ways it will get easier (emergency funds, peace of mind, college fund, etc.). HOWEVER…
      • Myth: the more you have, the easier life gets (paradox of prosperity)
      • Reality: The more you have, the more choices you have and that automatically becomes more complex
    • Some people are more suited to handle significant wealth than others - just the way we're wired

[16:56 - 28:54] The hidden influencers of your money

    • You'll never make a decision that is outside of the scope (or beyond the approval) of the person whose opinion matters to you the most
      • THINK ABOUT: who's that person that makes you want to put on your best or fix up things around the house or in the car for?
      • If you're giving people this type of power, you're creating a ceiling for yourself, especially in the areas of money
    • How to get over the opinions of others?
      • Must be aware that the opinions of others are a TRAP that you've fallen into / prone to fall into
      • So many of our financial choices are not around MONEY…a lot of them have spiritual underpinnings / spiritual choices

[28:55 - 34:34] What's the key "plan" that MUST come before a financial plan

    • The math part of money is the easiest part (i.e. tax, legal, compound interest)
    • The mission part is harder (why we do what we do, how we approach this)
    • Marriage: The tensions around money affect each spouse differently
    • Wealth doesn't deserve first position
    • Practical step to adopt a more holistic view around money:
      • PRAYER (prayer isn't preparation for the greater work, it IS the greater work). If prayer doesn't do it for you, meditate on…
        • What is your purpose?
        • How does your wealth support and fuel your purpose?
      • COMMUNICATION
        • Just talk about money without the need to have all the right answers

    [34:35 - 41:18] Money, Marriage, and Faith

    • You come into marriage with your own junk, philosophies, and thoughts about money
    • ACTION: Have simple conversations around financial topics. Ask questions like:
      • What are the pro/cons of having a budget?
      • How was your college tuition funded?
      • What was the best financial advice you received?

    [41:19 - 44:58] Wrapping Up

    • John's BIG domino
    • How to connect with John
