  • Scott Hairston | Success As a Family Tradition

Success can stay in the family…

If you're intentional about the choices you make.

In today's episode of the Coming Up Clutch with J.R.™ show, 11-Year MLB vet and the 5th member of Major League Baseball's largest family, Scott Hairston, shares the choices behind his successful run in the Big Leagues.

In this latest episode, Scott and I talk about…

    • What Scott's season of clutch moments can teach us about handling self-doubt
    • How to handle those moments when you're caught off guard and need to come through
    • A key discipline to stay a family unit while in a demanding career that requires a lot of time away

    …and so much more.

If you want to experience more clutch seasons in your life, then lock in to today's episode.

[00:01 - 8:47] Introducing Scott to the show

    • Scott's most embarrassing moment
    • Scott's background and the importance of family in his success

[8:48 - 26:11] What Scott's season of clutch moments can teach us about self-doubt

    • Choices he made:
      • Made a mental choice - had to put himself in a frame of mind that "You've worked hard for this"
      • Create an environment where you can succeed (get distractions out!)
        • Message for parents: create an environment for your kids where they could just be themselves.
        • For the "I can't…I don't have…" people: We all have resources - we can't be ignorant of that.
        • Reach out to mentors. Talk. Ask questions.
        • Can't go through life by ourselves
      • You have to be your biggest supporter
        • Ask yourself: Why am I doing __________?
        • We all have a choice to believe what other people say about us or not
        • Leaned into failure - what are you going to do TODAY to push yourself forward?

[26:12 - 34:04] How to handle those moments when you're caught off guard

    • Stay ready
    • Envision success (you can't go down the "I'm not used to this" spiral)
    • Take control of the moment
    • We either embrace opportunity and run with, or shy away. Choose to embrace it.

[34:05 - 39:12] What Scott this today's ambitious player or entrepreneur or executive is focusing too much on

    • Making money the quick way
    • Money doesn't bring happiness
    • For those people too focused on money:
      • What are your intentions?
      • How are you going about making money?
        • Must ask yourself: What's your motivation?
        • Success = happy family life, doing what you love to do
      • Do you like what you do?
      • Are you helping people around you get better? Are you mentoring someone who wants to do the same thing you do?

[39:13 - 44:40] Scott's key discipline to stay a family unit while in a demanding, high stakes career that deals with a lot of time away from family

    • Any time you leave the house, make sure you are connected to your family
    • Whenever you're at home, be there physically and mentally

[44:41 - 47:47] Scott's advice for parents with kids playing sports

    • Let them be kids - their sport is NOT their job
    • Don't have to play every weekend and every month

    [47:48 - 51:31] Wrapping Up

    • Scott's BIG domino
    • How to connect with Scott

  • 5 Minute Drill | Kick Anxiety to the Curb

Your emotions are the glue to make your habits stick.

Case in point: Two people are trying to lose 50 pounds:

#1 - just wants to lose 50 lbs for losing weight's sake

#2 - knows that, if he doesn't lose the weight, he won't be able to play with his kids in a few years

I'll put my money on the dude who has his kids on his mind every day on his weight loss journey…

Because he's going to be emotionally driven to lose those 50 pounds.

In today's 5-Minute Drill, I'm going to help you not only commit to an anxiety-preventing habit, but also emotionally connect to it...

Because I want this habit to STICK for you so you have LESS anxiety in your life.

    LET'S GET IT!

    [00:01 - 05:22] Opening Segment

    • J.R. shares a story about how he was living in a constant state of anxiety during the Champions Rise Challenge he co-founded and co-hosted during the height of the pandemic.

[05:23 - 12:10] What's The Drill? Tackling the Anxiety Triad

    • Pick ONE point in the Triad (unrealistic standards, perfectionism, or being "always on"). Then do the OPPOSITE of it. Here's how…
    • If you picked…
      • Unrealistic standards or expectations - identify where your standards or expectations may be too high or unrealistic.
        • Then ask yourself, "what's more realistic? Considering where I'm at right now in life or in my game or in this relationship, what's more realistic?"
        • Pursue that expectation and only once you hit that, then raise your bar.
      • Perfectionism - Identify where you're being a perfectionist. Is it going 4 for 4 today because you had an 0-4 day yesterday? Is it nailing EVERY point with perfection on that presentation you have to make? Is it making sure everything goes as planned with your kids today?
        • Once you identify where you're being a perfectionist, determine how you're going to give yourself some more grace. Then commit to that.
      • Being ALWAYS ON - simply put, schedule yourself some breaks. It's a necessary part of getting into flow and unlocking your best.

    [12:11 - 14:09] Wrapping Up!

  • Dr. Bhrett McCabe | How to Crush the Silent Killer of Your Confidence

Did you know that anxiety is the most common mental illness in the U.S.?

Over 40 million adults suffer from it.

So, chances are, you've either dealt with it or are dealing with it.

And if you're anything like me, when it strikes, your confidence is CRUSHED.

It can also lead you down the depression hole.

In today's episode of the Coming Up Clutch with J.R.™ show, I have a very real and transparent conversation with licensed clinical and sports psychologist, podcast host, and founder of The MindSide, Dr. Bhrett McCabe, about anxiety and what we can do about it.

But that's not all we get into. In this latest episode, Dr. Bhrett and I talk about…

    • The four characteristics behind Nick Saban's competitive edge
    • The silent killer of your confidence and sense of self-worth
    • What separates the Top 10 U.S. Open finishers from the rest of the field every year

    …and so much more.

If you want to prevent anxiety from wreaking havoc in your life and career so you can win at the highest levels, then lock in to today's episode.

[00:01 - 16:43] Introducing Dr. Bhrett to the Show

    • Dr. Bhrett's most embarrassing moment and the lesson learned from it
    • Dr. Bhrett's story and background

    • #1: Demands greatness - you better be prepared and ready to go
    • #2: Prioritizes mental health
    • #3: Thoughtful - he cares
    • #4: He listens and he learns

[23:49 - 44:14] The silent killer of your confidence and sense of self-worth

    • Anxiety is a silent killer because we have a negative triad happening…
      • #1: Unrealistic standards
      • #2: Growing responsibility of perfectionism
        • Perfectionism is wonderful until it causes problems…until you can't control the factors of your success anymore
        • Drive to CONTROL everything…leads to…
          • FOMO (Fear of Missing Out)
          • Fear of failure
      • #3: Never getting a break in life (we're living ALWAYS ON)
      • END RESULT: hopelessness and lack of control, which leads to depression
    • Strategy for overcoming anxiety
      • Adopt the "I can face anything" mentality
      • Stephen Hayes's acceptance and commitment-based therapy (ACT)
        • "I can accept anything that comes my way and commit to a plan to work through it."
        • Turn towards anxiety as an interested observer and say…
          • ACCEPT
            • "Tell me how you feel." What do I feel?
              • If we resist or try to block anxiety, it will just come back harder
              • => "I am _______ (insert feeling)"
            • "Ok, what does that mean?" I tend to get _________ (e.g. frustrated, etc.)

    • How they handle pressure is the separator
    • Bhrett's Success Formula:
      • #1: Skills and talent - how do you apply skills under pressure?
      • #2: Know how pressure impacts you physically, mentally, in decision-making, and how gritty you are
      • #3: Mentally flexible - ability to adapt (e.g. Scotty Schlefter reframed his bogeys as "No big deal. Others are bogeying, too")
      • #4: Can handle luck
        • Have to know who you are
        • Have to get more visual vs. technical

[47:42 - 54:01] How often strained relationships derail mental and emotional focus

    • Outside of Success Formula (above), your partner is the most important factor to your success

  • 5 Minute Drill | Find What You're Looking For

Have you ever noticed after you bought something, you start seeing more of it in your day-to-day life?

This happened EVERY time I bought a car.

Before buying the car, I'd see the thing every once in a while. But after I bought it, I'd start seeing the car EVERYWHERE.

But - this didn't stop with cars.

    Shoes…workout gear…shoot, even patio furniture.

Turns out, brain science can explain it. Most relevant to you, this phenomena can dictate whether you find more positivity or negativity in your day-to-day life.

In today's 5-Minute Drill, I share a fun little strategy that will not only condition your brain in positive ways, but also improve your relationships.

    Yep, you're getting a 2-for-1 today! You're welcome.

    LET'S GET IT!

    [00:01 - 05:27] Opening Segment

    • J.R. shares a story about how he was overcome by negativity with something as simple as a phone call.

    [05:28 - 10:53] What's The Drill?

    • Step 1 - Pick one person, or one situation, etc. that typically draws up negative thoughts or feelings
      • Examples:
        • Confrontational teammate or co-worker
        • Something your kid keeps doing
        • Your spouse
        • The news/social media
    • Step 2 - Determine the good you want to focus on about them.
      • Choose a positive word
      • In the case of something like the news or social, instead of just scanning, scan for POSITIVE stories.
    • Step 3 - Use whatever you choose as the trigger to your focal point.

  • Wednesday Recap | Kyle Stark

Just how consistently dependable are you?

The key adjective here is CONSISTENTLY.

Most people tell me they consider themselves a dependable person.

But how frequently they show up as that person is another story…especially during seasons of high stress.

    How 'bout for you?

If I asked the 10 closest people around you - teammates, family members, friends - what would they say?

In today's episode of Coming Up Clutch™️, I summarize the Top 3 nuggets from Monday's interview with leadership and culture expert and the former Assistant GM of the Pittsburgh Pirates, Kyle Stark.

If you want to ensure that you're consistently dependable in even the most stressful of seasons, lock in to get the cliffs notes version of my interview with Kyle.

  • Kyle Stark | How to Become a Pro's Pro

How important is it to you to become known as a consistent teammate who's reliable, gets the job done, and is a joy to be around while doing it?

In today's episode of the Coming Up Clutch with J.R.™ show, I dig deep into Kyle Stark's well of wisdom about how to be a "Pro's Pro…"

    …that person I described above.

Kyle is a leadership and culture expert with 20+ years of coaching and leading under his belt, with 15 of those years in Major League Baseball. Kyle's last stint in baseball was as an Assistant General Manager with the Pittsburgh Pirates.

In this latest episode, Kyle and I talk about…

    • A 3-Step approach to overcoming pressure
    • The common attributes of elite leaders
    • How to be a PRO's PRO

    …and so much more.

If you want to learn how to be that person who everyone could count on (especially in the clutch), then don't miss today's episode.

[00:01 - 06:25] Introducing Kyle to the Show

    • Kyle's most embarrassing moment and the lesson learned from it
    • Kyle's story and background

    [06:26 - 14:02] 3-Step approach to overcoming pressure

    • Pressure was internal
    • What Kyle did:
      • Clarity in terms of your identity - WHO ARE YOU?
        • If you DON'T do this, you'll allow the external circumstances to dictate what happens to you
      • How do you practice?
      • How do you frame it out? (is this unique to your situation, or is it normal? opportunity/privilege, or threat?)

[14:02 - 28:23] The common attributes of elite leaders

    • Authentic - people buy into people, not ideas
    • Consistent - model it more than preach it
    • They impact behavior change in a way that a person receives it - they navigate the challenge and support spectrum (push out of comfort zone in a way that could be trusted and the other person feels stretched)
    • Key question to ask yourself: why do you lead the way you do?

    [28:24 - 35:03] How to be a PRO's PRO

    • Has more to do with WHO you are and HOW you do things (vs. WHAT you do)
    • If you want to win at the highest level, you have to bet on people
    • The greatest ability is your dependability
    • 3 attributes of PROs
      • Purpose
        • Pros have clarity on who they are and what they're doing
        • They're very purposeful and intentional
        • The AMATEUR does what feels good when he wants to. The PRO does what he's supposed to do when he's supposed to do it to the best of his ability.
      • Relentless - can you keep your nose to the grindstone and keep doing it?
        • The amateur changes lanes and looks for the quick fix, the pro stays committed to the task
      • Ownership
        • The amateur points fingers and makes excuses, not trying to justify their behavior or performance, they OWN IT.

[35:04 - 39:02] The thing that blocks the most talented people from their highest level

    • They want things fast, easy, and exciting all the time. Success and excellence is the exact opposite of these:
      • Fast Speed
      • Convenient
      • Entertaining
      • Nurturing
      • Entitled

    [39:03 - 44:45] Wrapping Up

    • How Kyle maintains his spiritual and family identity in a demanding environment
    • Kyle's BIG domino
    • How to connect with Kyle

    KEY QUOTES

"Culture can change with one person, but you won't get change with one person." - Kyle Stark

"If you want to win at the highest level, you have to bet on people." - Kyle Stark

When things are going great, what are you doing to get better?

    Wait, what?

Did I just ask you a trick question?

When I sense that someone is all bark and no bite, it really makes them feel uncomfortable when I ask them that question.

"But, I'm good, J.R. Things are going well right now."

    You catch that?

    "Right now."

The inevitable storm is coming. Problem is, by the time these cats are ready to prepare for it, it's too late.

Here's something I've observed for over the past 28 years…

The most successful people I've been around in life…from me caddying for them back in my teens and early 20s to today as their trusted strategist…

They're MORE determined to get better when things are going great…

Because they want to pounce on their opportunity to separate themselves from the pack.

The ones that want to just FEEL good about themselves and their current status, well…

They're the ones that weed themselves out of the highest levels in sports and business…and life for that matter.

Don't be that guy (or gal!).

In today's episode of Coming Up Clutch™️, I summarize the Top 3 nuggets from Monday's interview with mindset expert and 2016 World Series Champion, Joshua Lifrak.

If you want to learn how to keep getting better and separate yourself from the pack whether it's going good or bad, then lock in to the cliffs notes version of my interview with Josh.

  • Joshua Lifrak | The Overlooked Mindset Shift That's Necessary to Thrive

How many times in your life have you heard the phrase, "Stay positive"?

    After a screw-up…

    After a loss…

    After a breakup…

It's an innocent, well-meaning little phrase that's tougher to accept than most people want to admit.

To be honest, the LAST thing I want to do is "stay positive" when I'm feeling like crap.

    So, what's the answer?

Mindset expert and 2016 World Series Champion, Joshua Lifrak, shares his answer today on the Coming Up Clutch with J.R.™ show.

In this latest episode, Josh and I talk about…

    • The shift the Chicago Cubs players made that led to them winning the 2016 World Series
    • What continues to give the highest level athletes and executes a competitive edge
    • Why going straight from negative thinking to positive thinking is NOT the answer

    …and so much more.

If you want to learn about the mindset shift the world's most successful athletes and executives make DAILY, then don't miss today's episode.

[00:01 - 12:44] Introducing Joshua to the Show

    • Josh's most embarrassing moment and the lesson learned from it
    • Josh's story and background

[12:45 - 19:58] The shift the Chicago Cubs players made that led to them winning the 2016 World Series

    • Saw chance to win World Series as OPPORTUNITY (not pressure)
    • Joe Maddon's leadership - allowed players to be themselves and HAVE fun during the process
    • Whatever we look for we're going to find - FIND what's great right now

[19:59 - 32:13] What continues to give the highest level athletes and executes a competitive edge

    • Approach MUST take: Get in front of this thing
    • 5 levels of MLB player
      • I'm happy to be here
      • I belong here
      • I'm going to do whatever it takes to stay here
      • Give me as much money as I can
      • All I want to do is win
    • How to get from "I'm happy to be here" to "All I want to do is win"
      • Cultural element - this is what we do here
      • Individually
        • Get a fear of God = being in AWE of God
        • Accept that this is the path you're on right now - make the best of it

[32:14 - 45:08] Why going straight from negative thinking to positive thinking is NOT the answer

    • Neutral thinking = Thought process that deals with concrete and objective facts with JUDGING or GRADING
      • Doesn't matter if it's hard or easy, or good or bad - if I want to go from A to B, then I'm going to have to do _________ (fill in your blank) => i.e. what are the steps that I have to take, then take them.
      • Car analogy:
        • Super negative: reverse
        • To go from super negative to super positive, you'd kill the transmission
        • When you get to neutral, you have a CHOICE on which direction you want to go

    [45:09 - 50:46] Wrapping Up

    • Josh's BIG domino
    • How to connect with Josh

"You don't have to be sick to get better." - Joshua Lifrak
