  • Mike Fumagalli | Protect Yourself from the Silent Killer of Unresolved Grief and Trauma

What if you were told that your best friend, spouse, and parent to your kids had just 30 days to live?

Just typing that question is tough for me to stomach.

This is the reality that Mike Fumagalli faced, with one exception…

He didn't know his wife, Kirsten, was going to pass just 27 days after receiving her cancer diagnosis. It just happened.

Mike is a close friend, educator, father, as well as President and co-founder of the Clear Ribbon Foundation.

And he's one of the strongest, most resilient men I've ever met.

I sit down with him today on the Coming Up Clutch with J.R.™ show and get very real about overcoming the deepest levels of grief and trauma…

Because the truth is - EVERYONE - battles grief and trauma at some level. You may be battling some level of it right now and not even know it.

If it's not resolved, it slowly destroys you little by little. And it destroys your most important relationships, too.

In this latest episode, Mike and I talk about…

    • How to move forward after a debilitating tragedy
    • Why it's so important to acknowledge and process grief
    • How to recognize and resolve unresolved trauma

    …and so much more.

Mike even has a special message for you if you're married with kids.

If you want to learn how to be more resilient, especially in the face of adversity and tragedy, then don't miss today's episode.

And if someone around you is struggling with grief, trauma, or has a loved one affected by cancer, please share this episode with them. Mike's wisdom will bless and inspire them abundantly.

[00:01 - 07:37] Introducing Mike to the Show

    • Mike's most embarrassing moment and the lesson learned from it
    • Mike's story and background

[07:38 - 16:06] How to move forward after a debilitating tragedy

    • Your ability to overcome obstacles and be resilient in the times when your life most demands is already in you. You have to find it.
    • You must practice the key pillars of resilience in order to develop effective resilience in your life. You can't wish yourself into being resilient.
    • Routines of continuous improvement (e.g. workout everyday, make bed, 10 minutes early for every meeting)
      • Routines become habit and a way of thinking (they save you from the spiral of getting out of control)
      • Resilience = changing the narrative in your head
    • Your life is having a generational impact one way or another. That impact is up to you

[16:07 - 21:15] How to best care for others during your own hardship

    • Find someone who can lead, guide, mentor, coach, and shepherd you
    • Find someone who can help you overcome trauma - your brain doesn't know difference between old trauma and new trauma

[21:16 - 29:54] Why it's so important to acknowledge and process grief

    • If you don't process grief, you'll be a prisoner of it. And you'll pass that on to your kids and that will have a generational impact.
    • Grief is the gap between what your anticipated outcome of an event was and what actually happened (there's incompleteness)...and you don't like the distance between those things. The distance between those things is proportional to the magnitude of your grief.
      • You have to figure out how to close the gap. If you don't, and that chasm remains open, there are deep wounds that will continue to manifest and will be passed on to our children
      • We MUST Recognize, Acknowledge, Resolve
      • We are not in the position to judge another person's grief - there's grief of all kinds, and because we're not the person experiencing grief, we're not able to assess it

[29:55 - 40:44] How to recognize and resolve unresolved trauma

    • Must understand how BODY responds to trauma so you're better able to mitigate the effects of trauma
      • Name it, recognize it, mitigate it
      • "Turn blue thoughts to TRUE thoughts"
    • Find community - going into isolation is the EASY thing to do
      • There's a time for reflection, but when reflection turns into isolation, that's where trouble and unresolve happens
      • There's power in a community that is experiencing similar things as you. There's hope, healing, compassion, understanding, transparency, and vulnerability, which formulates human connection

[40:45 - 45:05] A message from Mike to those who are married with children

    • Your life can change really fast - you can't let the sun set on things that are silly and insignificant
    • Be prepared - important have a plan in place
    • Know and appreciate the little, silly things (even the sometimes annoying ones)
    • Recognize that tomorrow is NOT guaranteed
    • Mike's BIG domino: Value and love each other and your family in a way that if tomorrow never came, you can say you loved and lived fully and completely (not perfectly)

    [45:06 - 49:27] Wrapping Up

  • 5 Minute Drill | Your Progress May Depend On a Much Smaller Step Than You Think

"Your resume gets you in the door. Your performance keeps you in the room."

When my friend and Monday's podcast guest, Seth Berger, spoke those words it gave me a much needed reminder…

    Our impact…our leadership…our MISSION…

It's not about what we did or about what title we hold…

    It's about the progress we're making…

It's about the steps we're taking to fulfill our calling in each of the roles we play each day - spouse, parent, athlete, leader, ___________ (fill in your blanks).

In today's 5-Minute Drill, I share an epiphany I had about getting into a better position in life and our careers, but then leveraging that position to make progress towards our ultimate goals.

This epiphany came during a recent grappling session I had with one of my black belt brothers at my Gracie Jiu Jitsu gym, 6 Levels.

If you want to make more progress in your life and career and learn more about this simple, yet profound revelation I got, then lock in to today's drill.

    LET'S GET IT!

    [00:01 - 08:01] Opening Segment

    • Story about J.R. learning a key lesson from a brazilian jiu jitsu black belt

    [08:02 - 10:33] What's The Drill?

    • Step 1 - Audit all the important areas of your life - your mission, your relationships, your finances, etc. Identify any areas of resistance…those areas that are causing some frustrations or making you feel like you're not making the progress you want at the pace you want…or even those areas that you feel exposed to risk.

    • Step 2 - Pick one area that's causing you the most resistance.

    • Step 3 - Determine what a normal step would be to move in the right direction. But don't stop there. Does that feel like a big step for you or a BABY step for you? If it feels too big, what's an even smaller step you could take?

    • Step 4 - Make your move!

    [10:34 - 12:46] Wrapping Up!

    • What's coming up on the next episode
    • Final words

    KEY QUOTES

    "Progress over position." - J.R.

"Most of your progress will come as a result of a series of baby steps, not a big one." - J.R.

"Let your goals and dreams stretch you. Let your next moves progress you." - J.R.

  • Seth Berger | Have Fun. Make a Difference.

How's it possible to have fun and make a difference at the same time?

For years, I used to think that making a difference on a large scale was possible, but the cost of it was always a daily grind.

"I'm on the grind" became my war cry.

Little did I know the definition of grind = hard DULL work.

I don't mind hard work…it's in my DNA. But dull work? No thanks.

Today, I sit down and discuss how to achieve the highest levels of success WHILE having fun with former AND1 co-Founder, Venture Capitalist, Championship Coach, and the Managing Director of the Philadelphia 76ers Innovation Lab, Seth Berger.

In this latest episode of the Coming Up Clutch with J.R.™ show, Seth and I talk about…

  • 5 Minute Drill | How to Get Your Body to Work For Your Brain

When I audit the seasons of my life where I enjoyed frequent success, one theme keeps sticking out…

I was open to learning new things…

    New ways to approach problems…

New techniques to optimize my performance in every role I played.

In today's 5-Minute Drill, I share a powerful stress relief technique I learned in one of my winning seasons. It's become part of my daily stress management practice, and a technique that I've trained my clients to use.

So, if you're open to learning more about a technique that athletes, executives, and world-renowned leaders like Tony Robbins use to overcome stressful situations and seasons, then lock in to today's drill.

    LET'S GET IT!

    [00:01 - 10:24] Opening Segment

    • Science behind Emotional Freedom Technique

    [10:25 - 18:40] What's The Drill?

  • Wednesday Recap | Dr. Doug Cowan

How many times have you heard the advice, "Just talk yourself out of it" or "Just talk yourself into it"?

"It" be that bad decision or BIG move you know you need to make.

I stopped counting because I've heard that advice from well-meaning people my entire life and…

That strategy - it just doesn't work that well (if at all).

In today's episode of Coming Up Clutch™️, I summarize the Top 3 nuggets from Monday's interview with neuroscience and neurofeedback expert, Dr. Doug Cowan.

  • Dr. Doug Cowan | How to Change Your Brain For the Better So You Can Get Better

What happens to your brain when your emotions take over?

    It's more than you think.

The more important question is, what can you do to make your brain work better when your emotions are high?

That's just one of the many questions neuroscience and neurofeedback expert, Dr. Doug Cowan, answers today on the Coming Up Clutch with J.R.™ show!

Join me and Dr. Doug as we talk about…

    • How relationships affect your performance and what you can do when things are off
    • What to do when anxiety seems to take over during key moments
    • What happens to the brain when you show gratitude and why you should show more of it

    …and so much more.

Dr. Doug has spent over three decades helping athletes and business leaders master their brain health and overcome serious mental health issues like anxiety, PTSD, ADHD, and depression.

If you want to upgrade the way your brain works for you, then don't miss today's episode.

Dr. Doug drops a TON of wisdom.

[00:01 - 15:55] Introducing Dr. Doug to the Show

    • Dr. Doug's most humbling moment
    • Dr. Doug's journey including 3+ decades helping athletes and business leaders master their brain health

[15:56 - 24:03] Dr. Doug's Take On How Relationships Affect The Mind And Brain (And Vice Versa)

    • You're allowed to think, just not when you're playing
    • The seeds of emotions are DEEP in our brain and are churning all the time when we have anxiety or anger or frustration - you can't talk yourself out of it
    • Keys: resolutions, forgiveness, understanding and then make a shift

[24:04 - 27:43] What Happens To The Brain When Emotions Take Over

    • Front part of the brain tries to solve problem
    • When it can't solve the problem, the middle part of the brain takes over and tells front part to shut up. When this happens, the emotions are running the show…fight or flight kicks in.
    • Always want be thinking greater than our emotions. Emotions are tied to the past. Thinking is tied to NOW and in the future.

[27:44 - 35:06] Identifying The Root Of Anxiety And What We Can Do About It

    • Lack of preparation - must prepare for what you want to accomplish, and also for Plan B, C, D, etc. AND prepare for each scenario
    • Stop using TOP DOWN interventions - when outside part of the brain is trying to inhibit the inside part of the brain (e.g. self talk like "calm down")
    • Start using BOTTOM UP interventions - using the body to tell the brain that everything is OK (e.g. breathing, tapping, etc.)

[35:07 - 36:08] When Happens To Your Brain When You Show Gratitude

    • Top/middle of the brain lights up with energy - changes performance of brain and central nervous system
    • Take a minute to write down FIVE people, places, or things you're grateful for and then CELEBRATE right now where you are in life - this will PRIME your brain for what you're about to do

    [36:09 - 42:54] Wrapping Up!

    Feelings vs. Commitments.

How often do you have those two battling each other during your day?

    If you're normal, it's often.

    But who's winning?

It's so easy to get caught up in our feelings. Next thing you know…

    It's the team's fault…

    It's the organization's fault…

    It's my wife's fault…

And then your commitments hit a brick wall.

Which means the pause button gets hit on your goals and dreams.

Let's stop this cycle from continuing in your life and career. Let's let your commitments WIN most of the time.

In today's 5-Minute Drill, I share a subtle, yet game-changing shift you can make in order to keep your goals and dreams on PLAY, not pause.

    LET'S GET IT!

    [00:01 - 05:58] Opening Segment

    • Your two choices when things are getting tough.
    • The difference between amateurs and professionals.

    [05:59 - 13:20] What's The Drill? The Commitment Card.

    • Step 1 - Find a notecard and write "You're committed to…" at the top.

    • Step 2 - Write in your first commitment. After you write it, add the word "because" to it. Then write your #1 reason why you're committed to this.

    • Step 3 - Carry your card on you wherever you go, with one exception: at night. Before you go to bed, you'll read your commitments one last time for the day. And then when you wake up, it'll be the FIRST thing you'll read in the AM. And then, you'll pick it up and carry it with you wherever you go.

    • Step 4 - Leverage your card throughout the day. Two options:
      • The obvious one - when you're triggered by negative emotions or feelings, pull it out and remind yourself about your commitments. As we discussed, let them take over, not your emotions.
      • The second one - Use your phone to set a few reminders to go off throughout the day with the label - "check commitments." This just keeps them front-and-center throughout your whole day and takes the pressure off of you to remember. Your phone does the work for you.

    • Step 5 - When you feel like you're crushing your ONE commitment and it's ingrained in your brain, add another…then add another…until you have a commitment card with 7 to 10 of your most important commitments for the most important areas of your life.

    [13:21 - 15:52] Wrapping Up!
