  • Wednesday Recap | Erwan Le Corre

How many times throughout your life have you caught yourself saying, "You're not good enough"?

If you're anything like me, that number is ridiculously high.

For years, I thought my lack of abilities was the problem…

My lack of skills was the problem…

My current season of life was the problem…

But after 1,000s of hours of deep work on myself, he's what I figured out:

All of those explanations I had for not achieving what I wanted…

    They were wrong.

    My lifestyle was the problem.

I had every ability, skill, and support system to go far, fast.

  • Erwan Le Corre | The Keys to Overcoming Loneliness and Negativity

If I asked you to hold your breath for 1 minute, could you do it?

Most people can't. That's why I was so fascinated when I learned that U.S. National Record Holder, Erwan Le Corre, could hold his breath for almost SEVEN minutes (yes 7!).

But what was even more fascinating…

Learning that we could use breath holding as a way to build trust in ourselves.

We hear that trusting others is a necessity for great relationships and teamwork.

But it starts with trusting YOURSELF.

Today on the Coming Up Clutch with J.R.™ show, Erwan shares the philosophy and approach behind trusting himself so he could unlock his superhuman abilities. He also gets into what has driven him to reach peak levels of performance as a professional, husband, and father.

Erwan's human performance journey is AMAZING.

In this latest episode, Erwan and I talk about…

    • Why it's so important to be comfortable with solitude
    • How to break the insecurity around taking time off
    • The real reason behind why Erwan pursues world records in breathholding

    …and so much more.

If you want to learn how to push yourself beyond your limits, then don't miss today's episode.

[00:01 - 12:45] Introducing Erwan to the Show

    • Erwan's story and background and introduction to natural movement

[12:46 - 21:36] Why it's so important to be comfortable with solitude

    • When you're not interacting with others, you're interacting with yourself and, in those moments, you have the opportunity to check in with yourself
    • Solitude = NOT thinking (idea of meditation)
    • Solitude opens up possibilities of what could be next
    • IN PRACTICE: could be as simple as sitting outside on your porch staring at a flower, sun, tree and connecting with yourself
    • When you do this, you connect better with others (because you're so connected to yourself) and that loneliness will go away
    • There's always a better version of you awaiting, if only you can put more work down.
      • Why don't we? It feels unsafe.
      • Relaxing makes you feel unsafe (because it's rooted in "you're not enough" and "you're not doing enough")

[21:37 - 28:21] How to break the insecurity around taking time off

    • FIRST STEP TO BREAK CYCLE: Acknowledge you're struggling with this insecurity
    • THEN: deeply investigate why you're unsatisfied despite your success.
      • Deep satisfaction always steps from simplicity (e.g. hug with child, etc.)
    • THEN: CHOOSE satisfaction.
      • Have to be intentional about getting satisfied…have to have a thirst for that deep satisfaction
      • Includes gratitude - focus on everything you DO have

[28:22 - 31:39] Why Erwan chose to do breathhold work and pursue world records

    • Wanted to break the default response to breathholding, which is negative
    • Makes him break past uncomfortable feelings - when you hold your breath, the first response is panic
    • KEY QUESTION when you're uncomfortable: How do I make my response better?
      • In breathhold work - you find true stillness (vs. breathe again) and acknowledge that the experience is unpleasant but it's finding you peace and compassion for yourself and, most importantly, TRUST.
      • Erwan's mindset: breathholding is a situation to help him find stillness and clarity

[31:40 - 39:59] Why so many people struggle with meditating

    • Thinking makes people feel safe
    • What's missing: TRUST in yourself
    • The struggle is a root cause of not being willing to take time off, relax, etc.
    • MUST celebrate yourself (as if we're saying, "Great job" to someone we love - except we're now showing ourselves LOVE)

    [40:00 - 49:15] Wrapping Up

    • Erwan's BIG domino
    • How to connect with Erwan

    KEY QUOTES

"Deep satisfaction always steps from simplicity." - Erwan Le Corre

"If you're not one of the people you love, something's missing." - Erwan Le Corre

"You're not the problem. It's the way you operate yourself that's the problem." - Erwan Le Corre

  • 5 Minute Drill | A Simple Strategy to Improve Your Key Relationships

I had it backwards for so many years…

Told myself, "Hey, man…when you 'make it'...when you're successful, THEN you can take care of your family."

    Boy was I wrong.

Now that I know the truth, I've decided to call this the Runner-Up Mindset…

Because as long as you have it, you'll never achieve what you want and experience the fulfillment you deserve.

In today's 5-Minute Drill, I share a simple 3-step check-in strategy I use when I feel like I'm not giving the people I love and care about the attention they deserve.

Bottom line, when they're not getting the attention they deserve from me, not only are they off, I'm off.

    Talk about a performance killer.

If you want to get the most out of your relationships WHILE getting the most out of your talent, then don't miss out on this lesson I had to learn the hard way.

      • WHO do you need to pay more attention to today?
      • HOW can you give them more attention?
      • WHAT do you need to resolve about YOU that is getting in the way of you executing that?

How many times have you heard, "Just take one day at a time."

    Ha!

Everytime someone says that to me, I want to 🥊 them…

Not because it's annoying as hell to hear it…

But because it's the cold, hard truth.

I lost count of how many times I've been so derailed because of my past or so anxious about the uncertainty of my future, that it paralyzed me in the present.

    Where does that get you?

    Nowhere. Actually, check that.

    It gets you somewhere…

    To a place called Backward.

In today's episode of Coming Up Clutch™️, I summarize the Top 3 nuggets from Monday's interview with serial entrepreneur and business coach, Chris White.

We got real about his recent exchange with one of his leaders and the challenges he's had to overcome to become a leader who's focused on the present.

  • Chris White | How to Be a Leader Worth Following

When's the last time you took inventory on what it's like to be led by you?

Here's the problem I've run into plenty of times…

I get so caught up in what I'm LEADING my wife, kids, clients, ________ to, that I lose connection with how and why I'm leading them.

Next thing you know I'm caught up in the frustrations and challenges of leadership and missing the point of it altogether.

    You feel me on this?

    So, what do you do?

I sit down with serial entrepreneur and business coach, Chris White, to lean into this exact question.

With over 25 years of business experience, Chris has had his share of experiences and ups and downs when it comes to leadership.

Today on the Coming Up Clutch with J.R.™ show, Chris gets real about a recent learning lesson he had about leadership and is very transparent about the challenges he's had to overcome as a leader.

In this latest episode, Chris and I talk about…

    • Why we must focus on the WHO, not the WHAT
    • What you must do if you want to be a leader worth following
    • Three ways to lean into adversity when you're being counted on by others

    …and so much more.

If you want to be a leader that people LOVE to follow, then don't miss today's episode.

[00:01 - 11:12] Introducing Chris to the Show

    • Chris's most embarrassing moment and the lesson learned from it
    • Chris's story and background

[11:13 - 17:41] Why we must focus on the WHO, not the WHAT

    • How Chris humbled himself and called his coach and mentors and asked for guidance after responding poorly to CTO
    • Book: "The Only Leaders Worth Following" by Tim Spiker
    • 77% of a leader's effectiveness is in TWO attributes:
      • INWARDLY SOUND
        • = self-aware (you understand how you affect others)
      • OTHERS FOCUSED
        • You have to be secure, settled, holistically healthy, and self-aware before you can serve others
      • We usually talk about what leaders DO, not who they ARE

[17:42 - 26:14] What you must do if you want to be a leader worth following

    • Have to look inward FIRST
      • Resolve your trauma and junk
    • It's never too late to change. It's never too late to learn and grow.
    • One of Chris's coaches: Dr. Don Wood (His book: Emotional Concussions)

[26:15 - 34:31] How to lean into adversity when you're being counted on by others

    • Three recommendations from Chris:
      • Have faith in God
      • Have a strong relationship with your wife/spouse/partner
      • Get a coach
    • You can't spend all your time thinking about the future and dredging up the past. You have to wake up every morning and just do the best you can that day.
    • It's one day at a time. Otherwise, you're living in the future of the past.

  • 5 Minute Drill | Apply These Three Steps To Breakthrough a Challenging Season

"I can't let them know how bad I'm doing. I've been having too much success."

Those were the words I kept repeating to myself seven years ago.

My anxiety and depression had gotten so bad that I was spinning out of control.

    I was embarrassed.

"People with your education, training, and network shouldn't be going through this stuff."

That was the narrative I was telling myself. As a result, I was losing my battles with…

    Temptation…

    My temper…

    My co-workers…

Pretty much every battle I faced I was losing.

Instead of speaking up, I hid in a corner…

Was too afraid to tell anyone close to me what was going on.

Meanwhile, my mental and physical health, marriage, and finances were going down the tank.

In today's 5-Minute Drill, I'm going to share the three steps I took back in 2016 to finally break the almost 4-year depressive cycle I was in.

Too many strong, talented, and passionate leaders are going through exactly what I was going through back in 2015, so I'm going to continue to speak up and out about it.

Even if you're feeling great right now, you want these three steps in your back pocket when you're not. Trust me.

Lock in to today's drill to get even more equipped for your battles.

    LET'S GET IT!

    [00:01 - 09:02] Opening Segment

    • J.R. shares a story about his battle with depression and how he overcame it
    • Previous episode with Dr. Robb Kelly: https://jamesreid.com/kelly-cuc

    [09:03 - 13:22] What's The Drill?

    • Step 1 - Come Out
      • Audit your life and leadership.
      • What are you struggling with? Even if it's as small as, "I can't get the dog to listen to me." Come out. Tell someone.

    • Step 2 - Communicate
      • What are your needs? What's at least ONE thing you need to get better?

    • Step 3 - Collaborate
      • Find one or two people to help you meet your needs
      • Put a plan in place to address what you need to address and get better
      • Don't do this alone, my friend.

The best leaders seem to have an innate instinct.

You know, the ones who stand up when everyone else stays silent…

The ones who charge an airplane hijacker while everyone else enters into a panic…

The ones who show up for their kids even though they're running a 102 degree fever…

  • Jason Hitte | How to Have Faith in the Middle of Your Storm

How easy is it to have faith when things are going good, but freak out when things aren't?

My faith gets challenged with a capital C when things are rough - just being real.

So, how do you keep the faith when everything around you seems to be on fire?

I sit down with spiritual leader and relationship expert, Jason Hitte, to lean into this exact question.

This man's faith has been tested over and over again as a former police detective, spiritual leader, and most recently during COVID.

He lets us see behind the curtain today on the Coming Up Clutch with J.R.™ show and is very transparent about his battle with anxiety and leading during the uncertainties of a pandemic…

In this latest episode, Ps. Jason and I talk about…

    • How to overcome anxiety
    • How to have faith in the middle of your storm
    • What's wrong with marriages today and what you can do to make yours right

    …and so much more.

If you want to learn how to lead like a Champion, especially during times of uncertainty, then don't miss today's episode.

    [9:01 - 22:44] How To Overcome Anxiety

    • First recognize there's freedom from anxiety
    • Relief wasn't immediate, but I was committed to it
    • Isaiah 26:3: You will keep in perfect peace all who trust in you, all whose thoughts are fixed on you
    • Anxiety is the result of what we're allowing our mind to be focused on
    • Anxiety is the RESULT. Must ID the root of your anxiety
    • If you work with your mind, you have to rest with your hands; if you work with your hands, you have to rest with your mind. Pair FAITH up with PHYSICAL activity
    • If you're a leader and have the mindset that, "I have to have it together" you're creating a performance mentality…we have to put on a performance or an act (vs. a grace-based one). Instead…
      • Humility - there's areas of my life that I don't have together
      • Transparency - cautiously transparent (not completely) - you don't have to tell EVERYONE your junk - just the people in your Inner Circle

[22:45 - 34:04] How To Have Faith In The Middle Of The Storm

    • Leaders aren't born or made. Leaders RISE to the occasion when challenges happen.
      • Everyone needs a COACH (to help you get better) and a COUNSELOR (to deal with your heart)
      • Leaders don't identify problems, they find solutions
    • Leaders have to interpret adversity differently. When there's adversity, it doesn't always mean you're on the wrong path. It's typically an indicator that you are on the right path.
      • You might not always know what to do, but God does…so stay connected to Him.
      • Galatians 6:9: So let's not get tired of doing what is good. At just the right time we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don't give up.
      • If you don't know what to do, just do what you do know to do.

    [34:05 - 39:54] What's Wrong with Marriages Today?

    • Marriage isn't the invention of man, it's the invention of God. It's not a government thing, it's a God thing.
    • We're not committing - marriage is jumping out of a plane with NO parachute (too many people going into it with a parachute)
    • If God is at the center of your marriage, he can hold it together (if self is at the center, you're done…marriage is serving ONE another)

  • 5 Minute Drill | A Simple Way to Stop Your Negative Thinking

"We're never going to pay my school loans off"

"So much for financial independence by age 40"

"There's no way we're going to pay the bills next month."

And on and on it went.

At one season of my life, these were my beliefs.

And guess how life and our finances went in that season?

    Yep, you guessed it…

    Our situation kept getting worse.

In today's 5-Minute Drill, I dig deeper on what Monday's Guest, Mike Fumagalli, said about turning blue thoughts into true thoughts…

Because after 10,000+ hours of getting coached, digging deep in learning, and getting in the trenches to turn my life, mental game, and performance around, I've learned that our beliefs…YOUR beliefs…

    They shape your reality.

As Michael Hyatt shared with me, we tend to experience what we expect.

If you want a simple strategy to stop your negative thoughts from holding you back, then lock in to today's drill.

    LET'S GET IT!

    [00:01 - 11:39] Opening Segment

    • J.R. shares a story about when he was in a spiral of negative thinking around money

    [11:40 - 17:35] What's The Drill?

    • Step 1 - Prep your materials. Get a piece of paper and pen, as well as your favorite place where you store docs accessible 24-7 - phone note, Evernote, Google Doc, etc.
      • On that piece of paper, at the top write: TRUST THE TRUTH, then fold it in half.
      • On top of the left column, write: BELIEFS TO BLOCK.
      • On top of the right column, write: TRUTHS TO TRUST.
      • In that 24-7 accessible note, title it TRUST BANK™.

    • Step 2 - In that left column, write down all the negative thoughts either circling through your head or the common ones that come up regularly for you.

    • Step 3 - Once you have all your negative thoughts written down in the left column, match each one of them up in the right column with the TRUTH.

    • Step 4 - Transfer your TRUTHS list into your Trust Bank. Review your TRUST BANK™ daily!

    [17:36 - 19:01] Wrapping Up!

    • What's coming up on the next episode
    • Final words

    KEY QUOTES

"If you just have ONE belief that's coming to mind and you've turned that into a TRUTH…and there's only ONE truth in your Trust Bank, you've won." - J.R.

"The truth is, we all have some degree of power…you have the power to honestly evaluate where you're at any given moment." - J.R.
