  • 5 Minute Drill | Save Yourself From the Exhaustion of Unrealistic Expectations
Do you sometimes set unrealistic expectations for yourself? If you only knew the long-term damage it's doing…

    To your confidence.

To your ability to show up when it matters most.

    To your relationships.

    To your leadership.

    To your decision-making.

In today's 5-Minute Drill, J.R. shows you how to save yourself from the exhaustion of unrealistic expectations and their damaging effect on everything that matters to you.

If you want to consistently show up at your best, it's time to start managing your expectations better.

It starts with today's episode. LOCK IN and LET'S GET IT!

[00:01 - 11:44] Why Setting High Expectations Is Dangerous

    • Example of what happens when you set unrealistic expectations
    • Science behind your expectations

    [11:45 - 22:40] What's The Drill?

    • Part 1 - After you complete your typical preparation for whatever it is that you're about to do and BEFORE you go into whatever it is, ask yourself this question…
      • Based on WHO I am, what I'm capable of doing RIGHT NOW, AND my current environment or circumstances, what do I expect to happen?

    • Part 2 - EVALUATE your expectations after you do what you do
      • If you're disappointed after the event - were your expectations too high? Were they not realistic with WHO you are, your capabilities and capacities, and your circumstances or environment? There's the awareness. Then, you can move forward and get better. All you have to do is ask yourself WHAT you could do next time to better manage your expectations.
      • If you're feeling good - you have a HUGE opportunity to capitalize on the good stuff. WHAT did you do to contribute to that? Anything you can do to make it even better?

    [22:41 - 25:22] Wrapping Up!

  • Wednesday Recap | Dr. Matt Kritz

What does transparency have to do with unlocking your best?

    EVERYTHING.

In this week's Wednesday Recap, J.R. summarizes the three BIG nuggets of wisdom from his interview with Human Performance Specialist and the man behind New Zealand DOUBLING its Olympic medals, Dr. Matt Kritz. So if you want the cliffs notes version of Monday's episode, make sure to check out this week's Recap!

    [00:01 - 16:03] Dr. Matt's BIG Three

    • #1: The fundamental characteristics that drive high performance
      • People thrive when the stresses they experience are within their capability and capacity. MUST know WHO you are as an individual and, specifically what your capabilities and capacities are. IF not, the best program in the world won't work for you!
        • Capabilities and capacities =
          • Movement
          • Mentality/thoughts on things like nutrition
          • Where's your self-efficacy and self-mastery
          • Mindset in general
          • Energy
      • Pursue MARGINAL gains (1-2% gains)

    • #2: What to do when you're in the proverbial s*** or get off the pot moment
      • You have to know yourself first…
        • Who am I?
        • What do I know I can deliver? What part of that satisfies what was asked of me?
        • What areas do I have NO idea about (i.e. necessary development)? How do I prioritize that development? How do I be open and honest and transparent about that (i.e. not being delusional or hiding behind something you can't do)?
      • PERSPECTIVE SHIFT: There's no such thing as strengths and weaknesses…it's more about CONTEXT

    • #3: Mistake people are making with feedback and information they're getting
      • They feel like they have to take it at face value and implement it right away because that's what they have to do to be successful

    [16:04 - 17:20] Wrapping Up!

  • Dr. Matt Kritz | The Key Drivers of High Performance

There's a foundational component to human performance that's not being talked about enough.

    • The fundamental characteristics that drive high performance
    • What to do when you're in the proverbial "s*** or get off the pot" moment
    • The mistake high achievers are making when they get feedback or information about how to achieve their goals

[00:01 - 12:18] Introducing Dr. Matt to the Show

    • Dr. Matt's most embarrassing moment and how he overcame it
    • Developing a stronger sense of self-efficacy and self-mastery

[12:19 - 26:42] The Fundamental Characteristics That Drive High Performance

    • #1: People thrive when the stresses they experience are within their capability and capacity
      • If we don't understand THIS, it doesn't matter what program we're in
      • MUST know WHO you are as an individual and, specifically your capabilities and capacities. IF not, the best program in the world won't work for you!
      • Your FOUNDATIONS of what you're doing must be set FIRST. You have to understand what YOU need relative to your capabilities and capacity, then make sure you can deliver that EVERY DAY. THEN, AND ONLY THEN, can you start looking at making GAINS…
    • #2: Pursue MARGINAL gains (1-2% gains)
      • NOTE: The BIG ROCKS should be addressed first if you're operating at UNDER-capacity

[26:43 - 33:41] What To Do When You're In The Proverbial "S*** Or Get Off The Pot" Moment

    • You have to know yourself first
      • Who am I?

      • What part of that satisfies what was asked of me?
      • What areas do I have NO idea about (i.e. necessary development)?
      • How do I prioritize that development?
      • How do I be open and honest and transparent about that (i.e. not being delusional or hiding behind something you can't do)?
        • Too many people are not raising their hand and saying, "I don't know. I'm not sure. I need clarity here."
        • If you choose to hide behind the unknown, that's called HOPE Performance vs. High Performance
    • There's no such thing as strengths and weaknesses…it's more about CONTEXT.
    • You have to be AWARE of your environment and what's expected of you and understanding what your natural drivers are and how'd they'd land in that particular moment and environment

[33:42 - 37:50] Mistake People Are Making With Feedback And Information They're Getting

    • They feel like they have to take it at face value and implement it right away because that's what they have to do to be successful
    • If you have the expectation that it's the TOP or bust, you'll often miss things along the way, compromise people along the way, and often not be true to yourself along the way
    • If what you're trying to achieve is NOT within your IDENTITY, you'll compromise

[37:51 - 54:19] Extra Nuggets from Dr. Matt

    • Matt's take on the BE YOU movement

  • 5 Minute Drill | The One Thing You Must Do When You Make a Sacrifice

Did you know your brain can't distinguish between your good habits and bad ones? You're the only one responsible for putting the "good" and "bad" labels on them. Your brain just wants automation. It just wants to do.

And you know - creating new habits is HARD. But what if it's the only way to get what you truly want?

It takes a LOT of something that the middle average HATE to hear…

    DISCIPLINE.

But what if you can make your brain work for you when it comes to creating good habits and staying disciplined?

    You can.

In today's 5-Minute Drill, J.R. talks discipline and shares a strategy around habits that will help you get what you want.

Without self-discipline, you lose focus. Without focus, you'll NEVER reach your goals - for your career, relationships, and LIFE.

Let J.R. help you help your brain automate the GOOD habits.

    LET'S GET IT!

[00:01 - 06:23] Good vs. Bad Habits and Their Causes

    • Stress and fatigue as a trigger
    • Having goals to stay on track and be more disciplined
    • What's up with our brain when our habits kick in?

    [06:24 - 14:38] What's The Drill?

    • Part 1 - Scan all the areas of your life.
      • Ask yourself: where is there a habit that's not serving me…that's not getting me closer to my goals and dreams?
      • Another way of looking at this is thinking about "what habit is leading me to regret?"

    • Part 2 - Identify the reward you're after.
      • Write out EXACTLY what you want to learn from this mentor, and, preferably, in the order you want to learn it.
      • Do not overthink it. Keep it simple.

    • Part 3 - Identify what's triggering the behavior.
      • Replay the last few instances of you doing the behavior or habit you don't want. When do you have the urge to do the behavior you don't want to do?
        • Was it a certain time of day?
        • A certain place?
        • A certain feeling or emotion?
        • The presence of a certain someone?
        • Another habit or behavior?
        • A combination of all or some of these?

    • Part 4 - Identify what new behavior you're going to stack on top of the old one.
      • Because our brains discount everything, your reward should be as immediate as possible - the less immediate, the bigger it needs to be.

    [14:39 - 19:56] Wrapping Up!

    • What's coming up on the next episode
    • Final words

  • Wednesday Recap | Erik Averill

In this week's Wednesday Recap, J.R. summarizes the three BIG nuggets of wisdom from his interview with pro athlete turned Private Wealth Advisor, Erik Averill. So if you want the cliffs notes version of Monday's episode, make sure to check out this week's Recap!

    [00:01 - 11:22] Erik's BIG Three

    • #1: Surround yourself with MENTORS, but not just ANY mentors…GREAT mentors.
      • What makes a great mentor relationship?
        • 3 Key Questions you MUST ask:
          • Do they know who I am? Am I willing to open up the deepest parts of my heart with these individuals?
          • Do they have my best interests in mind?
          • Do they not benefit from me? Do they not need anything from me?
        • Other MUSTs:
          • You MUST have the humility to admit you don't know everything
          • MUST ask yourself, "Have I given them enough authority in my life?"

    • #2: Own the fact that you're in control of your own decisions and spending patterns.
      • Your controllables are…
        • INCOME - invest in yourself
        • TAXES - plan your taxes because they're the only thing about money that's guaranteed
