There were low trading volumes in a holiday-shortened session. A 2% lift in Boeing shares supported the Dow Jones index. But shares of Apple fell by 2% on news of reduced iPhone shipments from a Foxconn plant in China in November as production was hit by virus-related worker unrest. The Nasdaq and S&P 500 indexes were also weighed down by shares of Activision Blizzard, which dropped by 4.1% on news that the US Federal Trade Commission could block Microsoft from taking over the gaming company. At the close of trade, the Dow Jones index was up by 153 points or 0.5%. The S&P 500 index fell by less than 0.1% and the Nasdaq index shed 59 points or 0.5%. All three indexes ended the week higher. The Dow rose by 1.8%, the S&P 500 gained 1.5% and the Nasdaq was up 0.7%.

The Ifo Institute in Germany reported a business climate index of 86.3, higher than analysts' forecast of 85.0 in a Reuters poll, and following a revised reading of 84.5 in October. Shares of world's largest classified ads company Adevinta and Polish insurer PZU jumped 7.2% and 6.6%, respectively after posting strong third-quarter results. The meeting minutes from the US Federal Reserve showed that most central bank officials back a slowing in the pace of interest rate hikes. Shares of the world's largest farm equipment maker Deere & Co jumped 5.0% to a record high after reporting a higher-than-expected quarterly profit. Shares of Tesla lifted 7.8% after Citigroup upgraded the electric-vehicle maker's stock to "neutral" from a "sell" rating. But shares of 3D design software maker Autodesk slipped 5.7% after cutting forecasts for annual billing and free cash flow. At the close of trade, the Dow Jones index was up by 96 points or 0.3%. The S&P 500 index rose by 0.6% and the Nasdaq index added 111 points or 1.0%.

Energy led gains, supported by higher crude prices. Shares in retailer Best Buy rose 12.8% after forecasting a smaller drop in annual sales than previously estimated. But shares in discount retailer Dollar Tree fell by 7.8% after the company cut its annual profit forecast for a second time. At the close of trade, the Dow Jones index was up by 398 points or 1.2%. Investors worried that China may again ramp up Covid restrictions after reporting several deaths over the weekend. Shares of casino operator Las Vegas Sands dipped 2.9%. The S&P 500 energy sector index slid 1.4% as crude oil prices tumbled on reports that Saudi Arabia and other OPEC oil producers were discussing an output increase. Tesla shares dipped 6.8% following a US vehicle recall. But Walt Disney shares jumped 6.3% after announcing the return of Bob Iger as chief executive officer. At the close of trade, the Dow Jones index was 45 points or 0.1% lower. The S&P 500 index dropped 0.4% and the Nasdaq index shed 122 points or 1.1%.
