The ASX is set to follow US sharemarkets lower after stocks tumbled on Monday as traders weighed the potential impacts of less generous monetary policy settings amid Omicron Covid-19 challenges and lofty equity valuations. Shares of Tesla were down 5% with Apple (-2.1%) shares whipsawing as it approached a US$3 trillion market value. Travel companies Carnival (-4.9%) and United Airlines (-5.2%) sold-off. But Pfizer shares rose 4.6% as it agreed to acquire Arena Pharmaceuticals (+80.4%) for US$6.7 billion. Moderna's shares lifted 5.8% on a White House push for Covid-19 booster shots. At the close of trade, the Dow Jones index fell by 320 points or 0.9% after being down by 361 points earlier in the session. The S&P 500 index dipped by 0.9%, down from a record, with the Nasdaq index lower by 217 points or 1.4%.

Mining and energy stocks were the most improved names on Monday, helped by improving iron ore and oil prices. Property stocks were also well supported, helped by earnings upgrades. Fading fortunes for bank stocks weighed on the Index.

Local shares are their best levels of the session at lunch on Monday as investors follow in the footsteps of an upswing for US stocks at the end of last week. Most ASX sectors are higher on Monday led by Property Trusts, Energy and Materials – Consumer Staples stand out with a modest decline.

In-line inflation data spurred bets the US Federal Reserve won't have to accelerate plans to tighten monetary policy. Shares of software company Oracle jumped 15.6% on upbeat quarterly results. And chipmaker Broadcom's shares gained 8.3% following the  announcement of a US$10 billion share buyback plan. The Dow Jones index rose by 216 points or 0.6%. And the S&P 500 index lifted by 1% to an all-time closing high with the Nasdaq index up by 113 points or 0.7%. For the week, the Dow jumped 4%, the most since March. And the S&P 500 lifted 3.8% with the Nasdaq up 3.6% -both lifting by the most since February.

The ASX 200 closed the week in the red after a tech sell-off in Wall Street overnight. Slumping oil prices also saw the energy sector lose ground, with the technology and healthcare sectors mirroring doing the same.

The economic threat of restrictions to control the Omicron variant mostly outweighed optimism about the efficacy of vaccines. Mega cap technology shares of Microsoft (-0.6%), Nvidia (-4.2%) and Tesla (-6.1%) all fell. Amazon shares dipped by 1.1% after Italy's antitrust watchdog fined the e-commerce giant US$1.28 billion for alleged abuse of market dominance. Boeing shares fell by 1.6% after American Airlines (-0.5%) said its still awaiting Dreamliner deliveries. But CVS Health shares lifted 4.5% after the drugstore operator raised its profit forecast. The Dow Jones index closed flat.  But the S&P 500 index fell by 0.7% with the Nasdaq index down by 270 points or 1.7%.

The Aussie sharemarket has finished a choppy session in the red – breaking a four-session winning streak. The market kicked off in negative territory, before a rebound in the financial sector helped the ASX 200 (XJO) climb higher. However, a late selloff saw the index close down 20 points or 0.3% to 7,384.
