Most of the 11 major S&P500 sectors rose with financials up 2.4% and transport up 2%. Shares in Halliburton rose 3.7% after higher crude prices over the past quarter boosted demand for oilfield services, resulting in the second consecutive quarterly profit. Technology led the gains with Apple up 2.6%. The Dow Jones index lifted by 550 points or 1.6% after falling 726 points on Monday. The S&P 500 index rose by 1.5%. And the Nasdaq gained 224 points or 1.6%.

The Aussie market is recovering from its opening slump with the ASX 200 but still remains slightly in negative territory at lunch. Energy & mining stocks are weighing most. Concerns that growing Covid-19 Delta case numbers could lead to fresh lockdowns and a more protracted economic recovery. A 7% slump in the oil price also weighed on the Energy sector (-3.6%). Airlines fell by 3.8%, Banks lost 3.3% and the Hotel and Restaurant index fell by 2.7%. Investors also brace for more earnings results this week. So far 41 of the S&P 500 index group have reported and 90% have beaten estimates according to Refinitiv. The Dow Jones index fell by 726 points or 2.1% after being down 946 points. The S&P 500 index fell by 1.6%. And the Nasdaq lost 152 points or 1.1%.

The Aussie market has started the week in the red with the ASX 200 down 62pts or 0.85% to 7,286. The major banks and miners weighed heavily while energy stocks also fell on an OPEC+ agreement to lift supply. Health stocks were some of the better performers for the day.

The Aussie market is off to a much softer start to the week as investors look at the impact of COVID19 lockdowns across NSW & Victoria. The ASX 200 is on track for its worst day in a month as the majority of the market falls, led by banks and miners.

Technology shares fell while defensive real estate and utilities sectors rose. Shares in Amazon fell by 1.6% and shares in Nvidia fell 4.3%. Investors were worried by the rising number of Covid-19 Delta variant cases. Shares in Moderna rose by 10.3% on news that the stock will be included in the S&P 500 index. The Dow Jones index fell by 299 points or 0.9%. The S&P 500 index fell by 0.8%. And the Nasdaq lost 116 points or 0.8%. Over the week the Dow Jones fell by 0.5%; the S&P 500 lost 1.0%; and the Nasdaq fell by 1.9%.
