Sellers held sway on Wall St pushing stocks to their lowest levels in a fortnight before a recovery saw losses trimmed. After being down 328 points in morning trade the Dow Jones index ended down by almost 120 points or 0.4%. The S&P 500 index fell 0.4% and the Nasdaq index lost 100 points or 0.7%.

Fortescue Metals Group (FMG) Australia’s largest pure play iron ore producer has reported a 66% increase in first half net profit after tax to US$4.1 billion, a result that was marginally above the average of Bloomberg forecasts.

Local shares have managed a slight improvement after a choppy session. The ASX 200 rose less than a point to 6,886 on what was another busy day of profit results. There was also little reaction to today’s unemployment numbers.

The Aussie market has had a mixed start to Thursday but is a touch higher at lunch. The ASX 200 has been supported by financials, health & IT while energy, materials and property are among major weights. January unemployment also fell to 6.4% with employment rising by 29.1k
