US sharemarkets were mixed on Friday. Smaller caps outperformed with real estate up 0.3% and utilities rose 0.2%. But energy fell 0.5% and technology stocks were mixed. The Dow Jones index fell by 179 points or 0.6% after being down 268 points. The S&P 500 index eased 0.3% from record highs. But the Nasdaq index rose by 12 points or 0.1% to a record high. Over the week, the Dow rose by 0.6%; S&P 500 rose by 1.9%; and the Nasdaq rose by 4.2%.

The Aussie market has taken a breather following a three day winning run which took the ASX 200 to fresh 11-month highs just yesterday. The benchmark index slipped 23 points or 0.3% to 6,800 as big name miners, banks and tech stocks weighed most.

Investors bet on strong earnings from big technology companies next week. Intel shares rose 6.5% after it lifted its 2021 dividend by 5%. Apple shares rose 3.7% after Morgan Stanley analysts predicted a record December quarter print for the tech giant. Ford shares jumped 6.2% after Deutsche Bank raised its price target on the US automaker's stock. But shares of US airline United fell 5.7% after posting its fourth straight quarterly loss. The Dow Jones index fell by 12 points or 0.04% after hitting all-time highs during the trading session. The S&P 500 index gained just 1 point and the Nasdaq index rose by 74 points or 0.6% - both closing at record highs.

The Aussie market has extended its winning run to a third consecutive day. The ASX 200 added 53pts or 0.8% and closed above 6,800 for the first time since 25 February 2020. Buy-now pay-later stocks were a standout with ZipCo (Z1P) urging 23%.

Local shares are firming for a third day in a row. The ASX 200 is 43 points or 0.6% higher at 6,813. The index has broken above the 6,800 point mark for the first time since late February 2020. The improvements on the ASX 200 have been rather broad based with nearly all sectors higher. Technology stocks are outperforming with financials, consumer discretionary and staples also among the big improvers. Industrials are falling most.
