US sharemarkets were mixed on Wednesday as investors digested the latest earnings results. Shares in Apple fell by 2.25% after releasing earnings after the bell on Tuesday. But shares in Boeing rose by 4.7% after profits rose in the quarter despite lower sales. The Dow Jones index rose by 30 points or 0.2% after holding in a 174 point trading range. The SP 500 index fell by 0.2% while the Nasdaq eased by 33 points or 0.6%.

Local shares were heavily sold off on Wednesday, with the ASX 200 falling 1.5%/ Almost all sectors lost ground, with energy and consumer stocks the biggest losers.

US sharemarkets eased on Tuesday in response to mixed earnings and economic data. Shares in 3M fell by 2.9% after the company trimmed earnings forecasts. And shares in Whirlpool fell by 10.8% with revenue for the appliance maker hit by a stronger currency. But shares in Procter & Gamble rose by 3.4% after its profit topped expectations. The Dow Jones index fell by 54 points or 0.3% after holding in a 90 point trading range. The S&P 500 index fell by 0.4% while the Nasdaq eased by 26 points or 0.5%.
