Discount retailer, JB Hi-Fi (JBH) posted a better than expected 11.5% lift in net profit to $152.2m. The result was boosted by a strong end to the financial year and the closure of Dick Smith stores.

Rail freight operator Aurizon’s (AZJ) profit fell by 88% over the year. The result was impacted by impairments totalling $528million.

Newcrest Mining (NCM) reported an underlying full year profit of US$323m which was US$101m lower compared to the prior period. The decline reflected lower realised US dollar gold and copper prices.

Ansell (ANN) saw profit fall 15.1% over the last year - hit by weak global economic growth and currency fluctuations.

US sharemarkets ended mixed as investors digested weak economic data. Producer prices fell more than expected while retail sales fell short of expectations. But shares in department store Nordstrom rose by 8% in response to better-than-expected sales data. The Dow Jones index fell by 37 points or 0.2% from record highs. The SP 500 index fell 0.1% from record highs. The Nasdaq gained 4.5 points or 0.1%, lifting to fresh record highs. Over the week the Dow rose by 0.2%, the SP 500 index rose by 0.1% and the Nasdaq rose by 0.2%
