US sharemarkets fell on Monday. A lower oil price weighed on the energy sector. And other investors chose to square positions ahead of a big week for earnings results and the Federal Reserve meeting to decide interest rate settings. Shares in Yahoo fell by 2.7% after agreeing to sell its core internet business to Verizon for US$4.8 billion. The Dow Jones index fell by 78 points or 0.4% with the SP 500 index lower by 0.3% while the Nasdaq lost 2.5 points or 0.1%.

State of the States 25 Jul 16: NSW still on top; WA slips to seventh

NSW has retained top spot as the best performing economy. Victoria has held on to second spot, but moved a touch further away from NSW. WA has suffered another drop, from sixth to seventh, just ahead of the Tasmanian economy.

US sharemarkets rose on Friday. Economic data beat forecasts. All ten SP 500 sectors rose, led by utilities and telecoms. But shares in industrial stocks, General Electric and Honeywell, fell, holding back overall market gains. The Dow Jones index ended higher by almost 54 points or 0.3%. The SP 500 index rose by 0.5% to record highs while the Nasdaq lifted by 26 points or 0.5%. Over the week the Dow Jones rose by 0.3%, the SP 500 rose by 0.6% and the Nasdaq rose by 1.4%.
