The local share market has kicked off the month in negative territory. However, better than expected March quarter GDP is helping to limit the losses.

The Australian economy has grown by a better than expected 1.1% in the March quarter. Annual growth stands at 3.1% - the fastest rate in 3.5 years.

The local share market has started off the month of June on a low, falling 1%. It follows gains in March, April and May.

US blue-chip shares fell on Tuesday although biotechnology stocks out-performed. Energy stocks fell in response to a softer oil price. Shares in Disney fell 1.1% after receiving poor reviews to its latest release "Alice Through the Looking Glass". Shares in Apple also lost 0.5%, weighing on the Dow Jones index. After being down by 149 points the Dow fell by 86 points or 0.5%. The  SP 500 index fell by 0.1% while the Nasdaq gained almost 15 points or 0.3%.

Ahead: In Australia the March quarter economic growth figures are released with the CoreLogic RP Data home price index and Performance of Manufacturing index. In China the purchasing manager indexes are released. In the US data on construction spending and car sales are released with the ISM manufacturing index and weekly housing finance data.

The local share market has closed in the middle of the day’s range. The ASX 200 lost 29 points or 0.5% to close at 5,378. Energy, Consumer Staples Telco stocks were the worst performers.

Canadian shares traded modestly lower on Monday. Commodity prices were mixed with oil up and gold down but financials were firmer. The Toronto composite index was down 0.2% in afternoon trade.

 

US sharemarkets were closed on Monday. Last week the Dow Jones rose by 2.1%, the SP 500 lifted 2.3% and the Nasdaq gained 3.4% - the best weekly gain since February.

US sharemarkets ended higher after investors positively interpreted economic data and comments by Janet Yellen. The Dow Jones gained 45 points or 0.3% with the SP 500 index up by 0.4% while the Nasdaq gained almost 32 points or 0.7%. Over the week the Dow Jones rose 2.1%, the SP 500 lifted 2.3% and the Nasdaq gained 3.4% - the best weekly gain since February.
