  • Who are We to Say Abortion is Wrong? (First Principles, Part 1 of 5)

The following message explores the foundation of a Christian’s moral authority and why we can stand with such confident resolve against the currents of culture and compassionately help women considering abortion to have their babies.

Who is anyone to say whether abortion is right or wrong? What kind of moral authority is required to claim abortion has been and will continue to be wrong for everyone, everywhere?

  • Circuit Courts Split Over Down Syndrome Abortions

Real Abortion News #186 - Originally aired July 2021

Missouri’s Attorney General’s Office is asking the Supreme Court to resolve, “a clear and well-developed split of authority.” Missouri along with 11 other states passed laws outlawing the abortion of disabled babies, especially those with a prenatal diagnosis of Down syndrome. The petition states, “deeply entrenched forces within our medical establishment continue to treat unborn children with Down syndrome as ‘mere blobs’…. Medicalized discrimination…contribute[s] heavily to their elimination.”

In 2019 the Supreme Court refused to hear a case invalidating a similar law in Indiana because no lower court difference of opinion existed. The Seventh and Eighth Federal Circuit Courts of Appeals now have conflicting rulings on these types of laws.

Several states are providing the conservative leaning Supreme Court with opportunities to dramatically restrict access to abortion. The future of abortion hangs in the balance.

  • If Most Americans Oppose Abortion Why Would Gov’t Fund It?

Real Abortion News #185 - Originally aired July 2021

A Harvard/Harris poll found that just 6 percent of Americans believe abortion should be allowed up until the birth of the baby. Life News reported on a Marist study holding that merely 13 percent of people support abortion through all nine months of pregnancy. A Morning Consult research study revealed most Americans think abortion should be made illegal. The 2021 annual Gallup poll shows that only 32 percent of respondents think abortion ought to remain legal through birth. This is why for the last 40 years federal legislators pass spending bills with the Hyde amendment, ensuring tax dollars do not pay for abortion.

Given that most Americans oppose abortion, why are federal government representatives, for the first time since 1976, considering a spending bill that would fund abortion?

  • AP Poll Reveals Most Americans Oppose Abortion

Real Abortion News #184 - Originally aired July 2021

A recent poll nuancing the American attitudes regarding abortion concludes the practice does not enjoy broad public support. 65% of Americans believe abortion in the second trimester should be illegal, with mostly democrats in favor. However, 80% of Americans across all demographic profiles, including democrats, think abortion should be outlawed in the third trimester.

Since legalizing abortion in 1973, the Supreme Court has not permitted state restrictions on abortion prior to their arbitrary ‘age of fetal viability’ set at 24 weeks. This may change given the court’s decision to consider allowing states to restrict abortion earlier in the second trimester at 15 weeks.  If the court rules in favor of the restrictions, harmonizing with the beliefs of the majority of Americans, the window of time in which a woman can get an abortion in the U.S. could narrow.

  • Planned Parenthood Expands Facilities, Expects More Out-of-State Patients

Real Abortion News #183 - Originally aired July 2021

Many thought the sudden closure of a Planned Parenthood office in Rochester was a sign of a consolidation. However, local residents are upset to learn the abortion giant was simply preparing to expand facilities with a new office in Brighton. According to Planned Parenthood of Central and Western New York’s website this move is part of a larger strategy to meet expected demand from women traveling to New York for their abortions. The Planned Parenthood location in Buffalo is also actively preparing to relocate for this reason. Planned Parenthood’s website states, “With…the possibility of increased restrictions on abortion access and family planning in neighboring states like Pennsylvania and Ohio, it is likely that we will see a large increase in patient volume in Buffalo. We have been working to ensure we are able to accommodate the potential surge.”

  • Abortion Tourism Has Begun?

Real Abortion News #182 - Originally aired July 2021

Prior to the 1973 Supreme Court ruling legalizing abortion on the federal level, only a handful of states permitted the practice, including New York. This created an abortion tourism dynamic as women traveled to New York from other states to get their abortions. Recent years have seen a trend of conservative states restricting abortion. Women seeking abortion who live in those states are beginning to travel to neighboring states with less restrictive abortion laws. For example, while the general abortion trend in the U.S. is up by 1%, it was up by 10% in Illinois, a state with no abortion restrictions surrounded by conservative states restricting it. If the Supreme Court overturns or modifies Roe vs Wade in the coming days, abortion will not end. The lion’s share will simply shift to states like New York. Is the pro-life community prepared?

  • Supreme Court Takes Opportunity to Restrict Abortion?

Real Abortion News #181 - Originally aired June 2021

The Supreme Court has repeatedly refused to allow individual states to ban abortion prior to 20-24 weeks gestation, typically considered the point of viability at which a child could survive outside of the womb. That may change. On May 17 the Supreme Court agreed to hear a case where a lower court nullified a Mississippi law banning abortion after 15 weeks. The case, Jackson Women’s Health vs Dobbs asks the court to clarify lower court rulings that inconsistently define fetal viability which arbitrarily limits when a state has a right to protect women and their pre-born children from abortion.

VP of Appellate Advocacy at Alliance Defending Freedom, John Bursch said, “Viability has never been a legitimate way to determine a developing infant’s dignity or to decide anybody’s legal existence.” Is this the first crack in the wall of legal abortion?

  • OK Joins Host of Other States Banning Abortion After Baby’s Heartbeat Starts

Real Abortion News #180 - Originally aired June 2021

On April 26 Oklahoma Governor Kevin Stitt signed a bill banning abortions after a baby’s heartbeat starts. In doing so, Oklahoma joins a host of states such as North Dakota, Ohio, South Carolina, Iowa, Tennessee and others in protecting preborn children from abortion.

Abortions cannot be performed without confirmation of pregnancy.  Pregnancy is confirmed by detecting the baby’s heartbeat. Effectively, a heartbeat bill outlaws all abortion.

The national movement to ban abortions at the state level after the heart starts beating is consistent with the purpose of government to protect all humans equally from oppression and injustice. The Supreme Court ruling legalizing abortion nationwide in 1973 irresponsibly disqualified preborn babies from protection under the law saying, “The word person does not apply to the unborn.” Heartbeat bills simply seek to correct the high court’s lapse of judgment.

  • What Would Packing the Supreme Court Mean for Abortion?

Real Abortion News #179 - Originally aired June 2021

Historically Democrats have relied heavily on the courts to accomplish their policy goals because they are too radical for the normal legislative process. One of these unpopular policy objectives forced upon unwilling Americans through the courts is abortion. But the Democrats lost control of the Supreme Court for the first time in decades with the appointment of Justice Barrett.

The easiest way to insulate their abortion policies from being overturned by the will of the people is to add justices. The Biden Administration launched a commission to study the concept of adding four justices to the Court. A few days later, Democrat Senators from New York and Massachusetts announced a bill that would expand the court to 13. Four Biden appointees would shift the current conservative leaning court back to a liberal leaning one.

  • SD Bans Abortion Based on Genetics and Disability

Real Abortion News #178 - Originally aired May 2021

Recently, South Dakota passed legislation banning abortion based on a child’s genetic disability of Down syndrome. Expert testimony to the legislature from Dr. Tara Lee referred to a 2012 US review of the medical literature showing a 61 to 93 percent abortion rate if a pre-born baby is diagnosed with Down syndrome. Lee went on to say, “Destroying the patient is not curative medicine…we must strive to advance medical treatments that can heal, not harm.”

The legislation passed unanimously in both houses. South Dakota Governor Krisi Noem signed the bill into law saying, “I look forward to the day when the Supreme Court recognizes that all preborn children inherently possess this right to life, too. Until that time comes, I am pleased to sign a ban on the abortion of a preborn child, just because that child is diagnosed with Down syndrome.”
