  • NY AG Seeks to Create Abortion Tourism Fund

On December 1st, New York Attorney General Letitia James proposed the creation of an abortion tourism fund. This comes amid worries the U.S. Supreme Court will allow states to outlaw abortion by the summer of 2022. James is asking New York politicians to use tax payor monies “to set aside meaningful funding to provide abortion services, transportation, and accommodations for women seeking an abortion if they live in a state where they would no longer be able to access abortion should the Supreme Court overturn Roe.”

Tax payor funding for abortion is unpopular. Further, the role of Attorney General is to enforce existing law. Lobbying to force New Yorkers to pay for even more abortions is politically abusive. But isn’t it reckless to use the justice system to do it?

  • CA Gov Newsom Follows in Footsteps of NY

Early in December, California Governor Gavin Newsom promised abortion tourism if the U.S. Supreme Court guts the 1973 ruling legalizing the injustice. One news source notes, “’We’ll be a sanctuary,’ Newsom said, adding he’s aware patients will likely travel to California from other states to seek abortions.” Newsom is vying for tax-payor funding of abortion for out-of-state women through his new 2021 California budget proposal. The Governor of California appears to be taking cues from New York’s Governor Hochul in her dedication to promote New York’s already bloated abortion industry nationwide. Further, New York’s Attorney General has begun the process to use New York tax revenue and the power of the justice system to lobby for the development of a fund to pay for abortions and related travel expenses for out-of-state women.

  • FDA Strikes Safeguard for Women Taking Abortion Drugs

The Federal Drug Administration is responsible for regulating the use of thousands of medications. Seventy-four are deemed dangerous enough to put them in a drug safety program called Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategies or REMS. This system ensures use of these dangerous drugs comes with increased patient monitoring by the doctor for the patient’s protection. The chemical abortion drug Mifipristone was on that list until recently, being four hundred percent more dangerous than surgical abortion. In April, the Biden administration temporarily lifted the REMS safeguards for women under cover of Covid. But as of December 16, the drug was removed from the list permanently. Given the FDA’s vigorous defense of its restrictions in court as recently as last year, it appears abortion activists sacrificed true women’s health care on the alter for their own political agenda.

  • New York Mandatory Health Insurance Abortion Coverage Blocked

Late in 2021, the U.S. Supreme Court blocked a 2017 New York State regulation, mandating all health insurance plans within the state cover abortion. The Catholic diocese of Albany filed suit. New York’s abortion mandate included a religious exemption. However, the exemption was so narrow even the Catholic church did not qualify. The official position of the Catholic church denounces abortion as so a grave sin that direct participation in it is cause for immediate excommunication. It is easy to see why forcing the diocese to pay for abortion through their employee health insurance plans is of serious concern. Albany Bishop Edward Scharfenberger said, “We are gratified and grateful that the Supreme Court has recognized the serious constitutional concerns over New York State’s heavy-handed abortion mandate on religious employers.”

  • Supreme Court Rejects Biden Appeal to Block Abortion Ban-Again

On December 10th, the U.S. Supreme Court rejected President Joe Biden’s request to block Texas’ abortion ban, again. This is the second time the Court heard an emergency appeal from the Biden Justice Department to strike a Texas abortion ban after a pre-born baby’s heart is detectable, approximately six weeks gestation. At that early stage most women do not even know they are pregnant. Further, in order to perform an abortion, an abortionist must confirm a viable pregnancy. This is done by detecting a fetal heartbeat. So effectively, Texas banned all abortions. However, while the court refused to block the Texas ban, they did allow for the lawsuits to continue through the lower court system. An early study on the impact of law on the Texas abortion industry reveals abortion has been cut by at least 50%.

  • Lighting the Way to Peace for Women Considering Abortion

Jesus was born into a world so inhospitable that an innkeeper relegated His laboring mother to give birth amongst animals. Children were so disposable the earthly king ordered the mass killing of infant boys around Bethlehem in an attempt to secure his political power against the threat of a foretold newborn King.

For women facing unplanned pregnancy and their preborn babies the world is just as dark.

The solution to the depravity and oppression today is the same as it was 2,000 years ago: Immanuel, God with Us. As the Gospel of Luke proclaims, Jesus is the One “To shine upon those who sit in darkness and the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace” (Luke 1:79).

  • Unplanned Pregnancy and Christmas

She found out she was pregnant. It wasn’t planned. She was engaged. He was building his trade. What would her family say? Would they be shunned by their community? He wanted to break up with her…put her away because of the shame. But he was encouraged to stay, to support her. They had no health care, were not financially stable, and when the baby finally came they had no place to stay. Yet, the baby was born, became the greatest King there ever was or will be. He made a way for the world to be at peace with itself and with God…that baby’s name is Jesus.

Unplanned pregnancy can appear hopeless. From God’s view there is no such thing as an unplanned pregnancy…and where there is life there is hope. Merry Christmas!
