Today I’m starting a new series on collaborative healthcare. In this series we are going to take a look at what it means for professionals to come together and collaborate to treat a patient. I recently opened a new office called Brain and Body Rehabilitation Specialists and this is exactly what we do there! Our office uses an integrative approach which means we look at the entire person before even starting treatment. We look at the mechanical, chemical, and brain components of a person and integrate many different therapies in order to work with an individual. In the next few episodes, I’ll be intereviewing the other healthcare professionals who work at Brain and Body Rehabilitation Specialists and they’ll be sharing about their specialties and how they contribute to an integrative and collaborative healthcare model.

If you struggle with depression, you can likely pinpoint an event or series of events that has caused or contributed to your depression. Today’s episode is all about sleep! If you’ve been following along in my neurofeedback series so far, then you’ll know that I am a huge fan of neurofeedback therapy and really have seen incredible results from it in my practice. When it comes to sleep, I’m sure we’ve all had times where we struggled to get a good sleep, whether that was trouble falling asleep, staying asleep or a diagnosed sleep problem such as sleep apnea. There are many ways that people address their sleep and try to fix their sleep issues, yet most people never think about incorporating their brain into the sleep equation. Good restorative sleep is so important for your overall health and if you want to improve your sleep, you need to consider your brain and how it might be contributing to the problem.

In this episode I share some things you can do to improve your sleep and achieve good sleep hygiene. Simple things such as exercise during the day, avoiding screens in the evening, and making time in your week to rest can help you see huge improvements in your sleep and in your overall health. I also talk about different brain waves, what should be going on in our brains when we sleep, and how neurofeedback can help us practice brainwaves that we’re struggling to access. The way we spend our time and the things we think about have a strong influence on the patterns in our brains. Anxiety and stress are normal human emotions but are not meant to run our lives. We should be able to feel stressed or anxious and then shut that feeling off when the threat or stressor has passed. In a chronic stress situation, these responses are never shutting off and cause long-term damage to our brains and bodies. You can do a few things to change these patterns, but I think neurofeedback is one of the most incredible tools out there. If you can see what’s going on in your brain then you can change it. With neurofeedback, we can literally train our brains!

Many children diagnosed with ADD or ADHD are on medication to help improve their focus. Neurofeedback therapy can be used as an alternative to medication or be used in conjunction with it. When used in conjunction, neurofeedback therapy actually makes medication work better. Taking medication for attention deficit disorders seems like the logical route, but if you dive into the research, taking medication to improve focus and attention might be inadvertently having the opposite effect. Furthermore, psychotropic medications (the kinds used to treat ADD and ADHD) aren’t generally tested on kids under the age of 18, so parents and caregivers need to be aware of what exactly these medications are, what the side effects are, and what their other options are. The good news is neurofeedback therapy is one of the safest ways to improve attention and focus. This episode is packed with information and my hope is to inform and empower you to make the best decision for yourself or for your child.

This is our final episode in the child development series and we are finishing the series off by hearing from a mom, Kelly Collins, who brought her son to Connect My Brain when she didn’t know where else to turn. Kelly shares why she brought her son in, her expectations, and some of the hurdles they faced. Hearing Kelly’s story perspective is extremely powerful. Her son used to exhibit all kinds of difficult behaviours and as Kelly says herself, every day was rough. Now, the rough days come much less frequently and the root causes of her son’s behaviours have been identified, allowing Kelly to really work with her son based on his needs.

I think it’s important to know the background of what somebody’s education actually taught them. There are so many reasons a child could experience developmental delay. When I work with a child, I want to know where development was interrupted. Sometimes it’s as far back as their mom’s health during conception, pregnancy, or birth, but other times it’s due to an event that occurred during the child’s life. I think it’s important to talk with our children and work with them - they need to be active participants in order to get things back on track. Being able to identify signs of developmental delay is crucial in order to try to make a change. Creating new patterns in our brains and changing our developmental trejectory can be a big job, but if we’re willing to put in the work, I belive that change is possible for anyone at any time.

You might not have paid much attention in your high school chemistry class (or maybe you skipped it altogether), but today we’re going to talk all about body chemistry and how it relates to developmental delay and you’re going to want to pay attention. There is so much chemistry for us to talk about and I’m just going to barely skim the surface in this conversation. Our immune systems (the hallmark of how we deal with body chemistry) doesn’t mature until age 3. That means whatever is going on in a child’s body in those first three years is the role of model of how that system is going to function. When children are constantly given broad-spectrum antibiotics, their good bacteria is wiped out over and over again, and they are literally programming their bodies to be sick!
