It's my 20th episode!
Statistically, half of all podcasts created last no more than 14 episodes, with 12 per cent only ever publishing one. And here I am, the big two oh. Now, is 20 a massive number in the grand scheme of things? I think we all thought so once, I remember age 20 and thinking I was fairly awesome - in reality I was still a baby in so many ways. Kind of the same as this podcast, it’s a wee baby but I’ve certainly given myself some things to think about. And that’s what I’d like to discuss today, a kind of reflection on six things I have learned or had confirmed in the last 20 episodes and the work behind the scenes.
Advice: Back Yourself and Build or Find a Community (1:55) - Join Connections, Coffee & Confidence Community on FB
Information Saturation: Just Start (4:40)
Being Me: Trust Yourself, You Know What You're Doing (6:43)
Serve Your Audience (9:23)
Consistency: Show Up When You Say You Will (10:15)
Authenticity: Maybe a better word is Integrity? (12:10)

There are riches in the niches...or so they say.
In this episode, I am looking a two definitions of and two approaches to niching in your business. Sounds thrilling, I know, but this has been one of my favorite solo-episodes to date. I feel there is a lot of talk about knowing your audience, being laser focused, yadda yadda - some of it has even come from me! Is it really all that important? Does it make sense for a small business owner?

This week I speak with Robin Isenor-Cantfell, a woman who - as a 17 year old, still in high school - answered an ad in the local community bulletin for someone to teach dance to a few local children. She grew that dance class into a 25 year career as a dance studio director as well as a partnership in a major dance education and production company in Nova Scotia, Canada.
Robin is incredibly heartfelt in telling her story of how her love of dance and vast experience as a dancer and teacher lead her down her professional path. With no formal business education, she has overcome challenges with grace and displays managerial wisdom that should be taught at the MBA level (but isn't). She loves her dancers, her staff, and her community - and they love her as evidenced by many of her staff staying with her for 20 years and her former students now bringing their children to learn at RSI Danceworks.
With her business partner, Jocelyn Hope, Robin has also grown Limelight Productions Inc to host the largest growing dance competition in the Canadian Maritimes.
In this episode, Robin shares:

So 2020. How has it been for you so far?
I don’t mind telling you, mine has been a series of ups and downs. I remember starting out with this drive, this determination that this new decade was going to be my best, I was going to do things, finally. I started laying out my plans, getting myself together to make my moves, making my moves. It was exciting.
Then, you know, things went sideways...
This year has been tough. We have dealt with a lot, overcome a lot to be right here, right now. So let’s not collapse into the end of the year, a crumbled heap of exhaustion, scrunchies and smeared mascara.

You know, sometimes you gotta throw your plan to the wind (or just delay it by a week) and follow where the universe is pushing you... For me this week, it's systems. Specifically, the basic systems we all need in order to run a financially sound business. There's nothing MBA worthy in here but sometimes managing the systems that enable and control your cash flow feels just that daunting. This quick podcast showcases the simple things you need to do to make sure you get paid.

Does that question strike fear in your heart? Does the idea of attending a networking event make you feel just a bit queasy inside because you know people are going to ask you?
Luckily this episode breaks down what a good elevator pitch consists of - can you tell the story of your business in one sentence? You'll hear about my own elevator pitch evolution, sort of, as well as some tips to crafting an elevator pitch that will make you sound so brilliant that your questioner will be left wondering why they didn't already know about you...

Sometimes you need to find new business. It's part of life. And sometimes part of that business is pitching - you know, when you go to an office or a retailer and explain why you should work together, why you are the best person/company for the job.
But that's not the pitching I'm talking about.
I'm talking about...gulp...the media.
(Cue scary , dramatic music...)
It might feel scary, it might feel out of your comfort zone, but listen to these three scenarios where you could be the right person for the media to speak to and see how you feel afterwards.
