Look, we didn’t mean to turn this into the Super Weeb Power Hour in Susan’s absence this week, but that’s just how things turned out. On this episode, we talk about finishing Dragon Quest XI and the art of the post-credits epilogue, wishing games reused assets and design more often like Team Yakuza does with Fist of the North Star: Lost Paradise and Project Judge, and diving into spoiler territory and figuring out why Spider-Man 2018 has one of the best comic-book stories in a long, long time.
Speaking of spoilers, Dragon Quest XI spoilers are very light and largely about its narrative structure than actual story (but we do spoil the ending of Metal Gear Solid 4, in case you were worried about that) and that discussion happens around the seven minute mark. We do spoil the crap out of Spider-Man though, and that discussion happens around the 53 minute mark.

If you don’t know about The Hair, you will after this week’s episode. We talk about how every woman in film and on TV has the same dang haircut, Nintendo Online’s inane rollout, Telltale’s unceremonious closure, how Spider-Man’s latest outing on PS4 works as a proof-of-concept game, and the nascent desire to build an arcade cabinet.

Welcome to the number one podcast on the internet about Whitney Houston doing cocaine. When we’re not talking about how we’re every woman, we’re talking about the economy of dialog (or lack thereof) in games like Parasite Eve and Octopath Traveler, how the opening of Dragon Quest XI should be ashamed of itself, how Slime Rancher makes the number go up real good, and how Frostpunk makes the slide toward evil feel like a series of actual, meaningful choices.

This episode gets a little spicy, so strap in and enjoy the ride. First off, David discusses the recent shut-down of several popular ROM sites and the legality and morality of preserving classic games when publishers either can’t or won’t; Susan talks about how Phantom Doctrine is making her a better, more patient person; and Anthony talks about finding the vision in a game like Dead Cells.
