We are back with a new interview episode, where our mic is YOURS!  Welcome, Brenda Mendoza, of Chicago. She is a K-12 ELL specialist in West Aurora School District 129. The mother of four received her Bachelors of Arts in Education degree from Trinity Christian College. She obtained her Bilingual and ESL endorsements from the University of Aurora. Her first Masters degree was in Curriculum and Instruction, with an emphasis in English Language and Bilingual Education. Her second Masters degree was in educational leadership. Brenda had the honor of being nominated Kane County Teacher of the Year and received the Kane County Distinguished Educator Award.  Brenda is now a published author of The Racial Justice in America: Latinx Excellence and Achievement, a series that illuminates and celebrates Latinx achievement and culture, while exploring racism in an honest and age-appropriate way. 

Join us in celebrating Brenda Mendoza, an author, advocate, and winner of the 2022 Latinx Educator Impact Award from the Latinx Education Collaborative.

Hola Hola! We are back for another episode of Conversaciones con Colegas: Season 3. In this episode we had the opportunity to speak with Lucero Ramirez, a current translator for her school district who supports families to access the language and information in schools. She was born and raised in Southern California and has found her way into education for the last 10 years.

Our hope and vision for our podcast is to elevate the voices and needs of educators and students, especially those voices which are often silenced or overlooked. Lucero’s work aligns with LatinXChange because she is using her bilingual abilities to connect families and bring them closer to their students and school events. She has been able to encourage families to raise their students’ attendance, and has gone as far as helping families in need find food and shelter. She continues to prove that these services are necessary in our schools to help ensure that education is equitable for all.

S3:E7 Maestra de Maestras: Teaching and Learning through Coaching and Mentoring

Hola Hola! We are back for another episode of Conversaciones con Colegas: Season 3. In this episode we had the opportunity to speak with Alexis K. Diaz-Feliciano, a Chicago educator who continually chooses to teach in the communities she grew up in. She is a born and raised Chicago Mexican-American one-fourth Puerto Rican woman who values the importance of providing language services to all students. She has experience teaching across countries and school networks, and uses her knowledge to coach and mentor other educators.

Our hope and vision for our podcast is to elevate the voices and needs of educators and students, especially those voices which are often silenced or overlooked. Alexis’ work aligns with LatinXChange because she continually encourages, supports, and enhances brown educators’ viewpoints on their leadership pipeline opportunities. She knows the importance of keeping educators who look and speak like their students in the field, and is determined to help achieve that.

Hola Hola! We are back for another episode of Conversaciones con Colegas: Season 3. In this episode we had the opportunity to speak with Elizabeth Ramos, an ELA teacher in Florida. Elizabeth was born and raised in NYC to Dominican immigrants. She is an Afro Latina who believes in education in academics, cultural awareness, emotional intelligence , and ethics as tools to excel in life. She also is a parent, and tries to instill these values to her children and her students.

Our hope and vision for our podcast is to elevate the voices and needs of educators and students, especially those voices which are often silenced or overlooked. Elizabeth’s work aligns with LatinXChange because she is constantly creating a safe space for her students to share their opinions as well as question each other. She is creating an environment where students can research and learn from one another, as well as how to be better human beings. Latinx students are typically taught in spaces that are not relevant to their backgrounds and therefore feel the need to stay quiet. Elizabeth encourages the opposite. Students are encouraged to speak up and speak out for what they believe in.

Alixandria is currently a middle school science teacher in Arizona. She continually ensures that she is representing her EL students in her classroom curriculum despite the barriers that present themselves through Arizona educational policies.

Alixandria’s work aligns with LatinXChange because she is advocating for cultural and language representation of her students in her science class. Although Arizona does not currently have a policy on using native language to teach emergent bilinguals, Alixandria uses other strategies to help her students grasp the difficult concepts that come up in science..

Hola Hola! We are back for another episode of Conversaciones con Colegas: Season 3. This episode brings on another amazing Tik Tok superstar, Laura Vazquez also known as Sra. Vazquez on Tik Tok! Laura is currently a Dual immersion elementary teacher born in California.Despite coming to the US when she was 10, and growing up in a system that went against her, she has continued her education and now has a BA in Liberal Studies, Multiple subjects credential with bilingual authorization, and a Masters degree in TESOL.

Laura’s work aligns with LatinXChange because she is advocating dual immersion programs in her district. Dual immersion programs have been proven to be the most effective for all students, but especially for emergent bilingual students. By advocating and educating others, she is allowing others to better understand the benefits of the program to extend it further.

Hola Hola! We are back for another episode of Conversaciones con Colegas: Season 3. This episode digs into the work that Kaila Stovall has been doing in her hometown of New Braunfels, Texas. Kaila is a mom, high school teacher, and is now also running for a position on her children’s school board. Kaila continually advocates for her students beyond the classroom, and hopes that her position on the board will allow her to fight for equity within the classroom and in education.

Bilingual students should be receiving instruction to elevate their voices and the strengths they already have. As Kaila has noticed these injustices, she has decided to run for her school board to be able to advocate for change.
