Last week I referenced that the American Dream has changed from owning land and a home to owning a business. I was wrong. In researching more about the subject I discovered the original American Dream was “the pursuit of happiness”. It’s written right into our Declaration of Independence. In this episode I got to catch up with Jasmine Allen, one of our Ellis Fund parents. Her daughter, Amira is very shy about speaking in public, but she does join our conversation occasionally.

Before we begin, we would like to set the stage for our listeners to understand parents of a child diagnosed with cancer are not forewarned or prepared to face the upheaval of their lives. These parents are living a normal life, then one day they make the usual trip to the grocery store and that evening find themselves making decisions to fight for their child's life. Parents are thrown into a whirlwind of hospital rooms and medical procedures while trying to comprehend the medical terminology swirling around them.

This is how Jasmine’s routine got interrupted on New Year's eve of 2012.

Being the Founder of the Ellis Fund has offered me well-rounded access to the children bravely fighting for their lives, their parents, and their support teams. We have a special series for you to hear those stories as told from each of those perspectives. Noah Ridenour is our first of this series. Today we find out why he believes being eight years old was the “best age” to embark on his cancer journey.
