Carla B. Monteiro earned an Associate’s degree in Human Services and a Substance Abuse Counseling Certificate from Quincy College, a Bachelor's degree in Social Work from Bridgewater State University, and a Master’s degree in Social Work at Boston College. Carla is a member of the National Association of Black Social Workers and the National Association of Social Workers, MA-Chapter. She is the Founder and President of the Cape Verdean Social Workers Association. In 2019, Carla was appointed as one of 277 elected delegates for the National Association of Social Workers Delegate Assembly slate for Massachusetts. She currently serves as an At-Large Delegate. She was also a mentor (Big Sister) with the Big Sisters Association of Greater Boston.

Carla is a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker (LICSW) who works as an Addictions Clinical Social Worker at the Bridge Clinic at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. And is an Emergency Psychiatric Clinical Social Worker at Boston Children's Hospital. Carla previously worked with incarcerated men and women at the Suffolk County House of Correction and Nashua Street Jail. In May 2019, Carla was the honoree for the “Future of Social Work Award” by the National Association of Social Workers-Massachusetts Chapter. In 2020, she was honored with the Alfred J. Gomes Award from Bridgewater State University and the 40 Under 40 Award from the Boston Business Journal. In 2021, she was recognized as one of Boston’s Most Impactful Black Women by Get Konnected. Carla is passionate about community investment and displays that in her efforts to support them through advocacy and direct service. Carla is a racial and social justice advocate who leads with integrity and equity at the forefront.

Understanding common power dynamics can help you resolve conflict and create a more balanced and emotionally secure relationship.

“What it comes down to is all partners want to feel seen and heard,” explains Lee Phillips, LCSW, a psychotherapist in New York and Virginia. “If they can validate and show empathy, this brings healing and balance to the relationship.”

Historical Information: “ In 2016, Sha Battle, a tech consultant and entrepreneur, often felt the diverse contributions of Black women weren’t well represented in education. So Battle created a movement to recognize April as International Black Women’s History Month in Georgia. Conveniently following Black and Women’s History Month, Battle found a way to uplift and support the achievements of Black and minority women of the diaspora-especially those not traditionally taught in schools. 

Battle felt Black History Month in February and Women’s History Month in March weren’t enough to commemorate the contributions of Black women- and honestly? Points were made. We need to recognize International Black Women’s History Month in our classrooms, offices, churches, and digital spaces nationwide because Black women experience combined marginalization simultaneously. In the same manner that the experiences of Black people are distinct from those of people of color, the marginalization of Black women cannot be generalized within the Black community or mainstream “white” feminism. This intersectionality can be explained with many terms: misogynoir, womanism, even triple consciousness. But the core idea behind it can be best exemplified through Alice Walker, who coined the term “womanism”.

Black women never have the privilege of separating their race from their gender. So, why are we recognizing their achievements through a single identity, despite twice as many obstacles?Because of this, Black women’s sacrifices, struggles, and everything in between deserves to be recognized with a consideration to the combined marginalized experience. 

But all that’s back in the past, surely, we have learned from then, right? Because the civil rights and suffrage movements were ongoing in the same time period, Black women felt pressured to choose a side to fight for. Our contributions are already so narrowly taught but by viewing our history through a single lens, we are erasing the experience even further. Particularly in the Black community, this stems from an all too common belief that Black women must put gender aside to focus on racial equality. This is a coded way of elevating Black men without regarding the distinct oppression of Black women. Today, Black women don’t have to choose a side. Amazing sisters like Sha Battle come in every profession, shade, and class. Thus, we need to have a month that gives a proper shout out to their continued accomplishments and success. Scientific: Mother of civilization; one from whom all life comes forth. One who subscribes and practices thoughts and deeds which promote unity among people of color. Synonyms: Wife, Mother, Sister, Leader, Teacher, Warrior. Adjectives: Strong, Intelligent, Beautiful. Compassionate. Tireless. We gather to celebrate her; The Black Woman! She who has no choice but to wear the multiple hats, to do the work no one else does, who is the first to rise and last to sleep. The City of Boston Equity and Inclusion Cabinet, celebrates her, we see her, we appreciate her; The Black Woman. A Night dedicated to all Black Women through Poetry and Song.

What does comparison theory mean?

the proposition that people evaluate their abilities and attitudes in relation to those of others in a process that plays a significant role in self-image and subjective well-being.

Social comparison theory suggests that people value their own personal and social worth by assessing how they compare to others. Introduced by Leon Festinger in 1954, the theory describes the comparison processes people utilize to evaluate their actions, accomplishments, and opinions in contrast to those of other people.

What is Body dysmorphic disorder (BDD), or body dysmorphia?   Body dysmorphic disorder (BDD)is a mental health condition where a person spends a lot of time worrying about flaws in their appearance. These flaws are often unnoticeable to others.

Symptoms of BDD include:

• Constantly checking yourself in the mirror.
• Avoiding mirrors.
• Trying to hide your body part under a hat, scarf, or makeup.
• Constantly exercising or grooming.
• Constantly comparing yourself with others.
• Always asking other people whether you look OK.

In 2019, it was reported that more women listen to the radio than men but men listen longer. This trend, which has been showing up in Nielsen listening estimates for more than a decade, is all the more noteworthy today in light of new data showing women spend nearly 73 hours a week consuming media. Nov 21, 2019

Black women podcast listeners are more likely to be monthly listeners and Black men podcast listeners are more likely to be weekly listeners: Among Black monthly podcast listeners, 55% are women, but among Black weekly podcast listeners 52% are men.

Representation matters to Black podcast listeners: 75% of Black monthly podcast listeners frequently or occasionally follow or seek out content that focuses on Black stories and perspectives on podcasts. 

According to Soto, “The report’s findings illustrate the opportunity and value of Black representation. The data depicts a clear and untapped craving for Black stories and perspectives in podcasting. And the benefits of these stories to advertisers are on full display when we consider Black listeners’ high level of engagement with advertising brands on shows with Black hosts.”

Research Summary. Using a database of 30 million profiles, Zippia estimates demographics and statistics for radio hosts in the United States. Our estimates are verified against Bureau of Labor Statistics, Census, and current job openings data for accuracy. After extensive research and analysis, Zippia's data science team found that:

• There are over 11,542 radio hosts currently employed in the United States.
• 39.3% of all radio hosts are women, while 60.7% are men.

More about this week's guest, James Harris.

James attended St Paul’s College and has a BA in Psychology. After his freshman year, he joined the Army. James has eight years of service with an Honorable Discharge. He has two deployments one to Iraq and one to Afghanistan. After his military duty, he earned a MA in Clinical Mental Health Counseling (CMHC) from South University. He is a License Mental Health Professional, LPC. He is a member of The Omega Psi Phi Inc Fraternity, Chi Sigma Iota Honor Society (CSI), American Counselors Association (ACA), Richmond Area Counselors Association (RACA) and board member of National Alliance of Mental Illness (NAMI-CVA) and the Co-Chair of DEI for a DOD agency.

James is a multi-entrepreneur in Richmond VA. He works in community-based services in the inner cities, sits on Family Assessment Planning Team (F.A.P.T) meetings for Dep of Social Services (DSS) and at schools. He works in private practice and has started an international movement called “Men to Heal”.

“Men to Heal” assist men to focus on their overall wellness, MENtal, emotional and physical HEALth. He conducts sessions on various topics involving boys/men and MENtal HEALth. Feel free to stroll his page to purchase a shirt, get familiar or to see him with celebrities, athletes, and politicians who are in support of the movement. James conducts speaking engagements for various companies, nonprofits, colleges, and universities and has done engagements in many states and a host of countries and he has a Tedx Talk.

James owns The HEALing Hub (@the_healing_hub-rva) which offers outpatient therapy, massages, yoga, mindfulness, seminars (financial literacy, first-time homebuying, veteran seminars, voter education, restoration of rights, LGBTQ+ to name a few) toiletry drives, school supply drives and feed the less fortunate every third Saturday.

James authored a book titled “Man Just Express Yourself” which is an interactive guide for MEN, young and old. You can get a copy (Walmart, Amazon, Barnes and Nobles, Target, and other bookstores). He also created a board game called “Cheesy Dates”. This is a tool to enhance communication in friendships and relationships. James has a YouTube channel that you can subscribe to called

“Men to Heal”, where provides insight into wellness topics both

physical and MENtal HEALth, and assistance for other therapists and those who are interested in wellness. This channel also assists families.

About the Author/Guest 

Charmyra E. Fleming is an entrepreneur and romance author that writes about love with a realistic and

dramatic flair. With three romance novels, The Violet Rose, Three’s a Charm, and Perfect Chemistry

available now, she is excited to release her fourth in 2023. On her blog, Charmyra, offers readers a bi-weekly

motivational post to encourage them to live their lives with purpose, intention, and full of passion.

Before starting her company Creative Calfuray, LLC® in 2018, to self-publish her first novella, The Violet

Rose, Charmyra spent 3 years working as a Senior Budget Analyst and Supplier Diversity Professional for

Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts. She currently works as a Procurement Oversight Professional in

Washington, D.C. Charmyra has a passion for inspiring others, as well as, supporting the efforts of diverse

businesses. After a successful career as a Financial Services and Supplier Diversity Professional helping

diverse businesses, through her business, Creative Calfuray, LLC®, Charmyra continues to help other small

diverse businesses and nonprofits with graphic design projects. In 2023, she has extended her services to also

provide copywriting and grant writing services. In July 2020, Charmyra began to share her “author-preneurship” journey with listeners of her podcast, The Purple Charm Experience®. One of the benefits of this podcast is listeners can hear Charmyra’s own gems and nuggets as lessons learned, and best practices

that can ultimately benefit their own journey. Season 4 kicks off in June 2023.

Charmyra enjoys urban line dancing, belly dancing, and freelancing as a makeup artist. She lives in

Maryland with her husband and two sons.
