Tigers 3, Indians 2 – Cabrera homers off Bieber in snow, Tigers beat Indians 3-2
Miguel Cabrera homered through the snow in his first at-bat of the season, then added a sparkling play at first base to lift the Detroit Tigers to a 3-2 victory over the Cleveland Indians. Matthew Boyd beat reigning Cy Young Award winner Shane Bieber, and the Tigers welcomed their fans back to Comerica Park with a victory. The temperature at game time was 32 degrees, and the snow was starting to pick up a bit when Cabrera connected for his 488th career homer. Bieber struck out 12 in six innings for Cleveland.
Pirates 5, Cubs 3 – Hayes homers, Pirates 2-hit Cubs 5-3 on chilly opening day
Ke’Bryan Hayes hit a two-run homer and Pittsburgh’s relievers dominated in a two-hitter, helping the Pirates beat the Chicago Cubs 5-3 on a chilly opening day. The gametime temperature at Wrigley Field was 36 degrees, and the flags at the iconic ballpark rippled in the breeze for much of the sunny afternoon. A crowd of 10,343 dressed in winter jackets, hooded sweatshirts and hats for the return of fans to Wrigley after they were kept out last summer because of the pandemic. Anthony Rizzo, Joc Pederson and Willson Contreras each hit a sacrifice fly for Chicago, but that was it for the reigning NL Central champions.
Angels 4, White Sox 3 – Trout, Pujols lead Angels' late rally past White Sox, 4-3
The Los Angeles Angels rallied in the eighth inning for a 4-3 victory over the Chicago White Sox on opening day. Mike Trout delivered the tying single and Shohei Ohtani scored the go-ahead run on Albert Pujols’ groundout. Max Stassi homered and Justin Upton had an RBI single in the Angels’ first opening day at home since 2016. The Halos’ late surge for two unearned runs spoiled the second debut of White Sox manager Tony La Russa. Adam Eaton hit a tiebreaking, two-run homer in his first game back with the White Sox.

Josh Jackson scored 19 of his season-high 31 points in the first half and the Detroit Pistons went on to rout the Washington Wizards 120-91. The Pistons overcame Russell Westbrook’s 18th triple-double of the season. Westbrook finished with 16 points, 12 assists and 11 rebounds. He also had nine turnovers. Mason Plumlee added 13 points and 11 rebounds for the Pistons, who had seven players in double figures. Robin Lopez had 16 points for Washington and Alex Len added 14.
